History of Protection Strategy of Prithvipati Shah from Mughal Emperor Shahjahan

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -147

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -394

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Garhwal King Prithvipati Shah Insulting Gifts from Shahjhan

Garhwal King Shyam Shah visited Agra for meeting Jahangir and Jahangir offered gifts to Shyam Shah. Due to this incident, Muslim historians misquoted Garhwal Kingdom as part of Mughal Empire.
Shahjhan crowned himself and took Empire charge in 1628. Mahipati Shah was king of Garhwal at this time.Mahipati Shah did not attend the crowning of Shahjahan.
When Prithvipati Shah was ascended on crown in 1640, Shahjahan sent his envoy to Shrinagar Garhwal with gifts and an order. The ministers advised Prithvipati Shah to welcome Mughal Empire diplomat. However, Prithvipati Shah argued that the representative of Mughal Empire is just a servant and He would not salute the representative. King Prithvipati Shah asked his soldiers to bring Mughal envoy at palace steps with force.
The soldiers brought the Mughal representative by force to palace. The king put the gifts from Shahjahan below the bed and sat on that bed. Prithvipati Shah did not offer the envoy any seat and asked him to sit on ground. After some time, Prithvipati Shah asked the envoy to leave palace.
In night, the envoy ran away from Shrinagar. The envoy told the details to Shahjahan. The envoy told to Shahjahan that Garhwal King does not care for order from Mughal Emperor. The envoy also told that people are afraid of Prithvipati Shah.
The Muslim historians did not put any light on the above incident. However, Maularam wrote about above incident in details.

Bagh ka Bon: A Garhwali Poetry Collection would be remembered for Newer Epitomes, Fresh Symbols, and Innovative Phrases
Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2280
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of 'बाघ का बोण’Bagh a Bon; A Garhwali Poetry Collection by Madhusudan Thapliyal
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

Madhusudan Thapliyal is famous for his Garhwali Ghazal and his first Garhwali Ghazal collection ‘Harbi-Harbi’ had been in discussion for long among Garhwali Literature creative.
At present, there are two types of poets in Garhwali poetry world. First poet documents as if he was just a Cameraman. Second types of poets take the readers in depth by their poems and compel them to rethink.
The present Garhwali Poetry collection has its importance more due to it has newer types of epitomes, similes, phrases. The human emotions and daily life does not change at all with times only physical dimensions change with time. There is morning, there is thirst, there is hunger and there is death. The poets have been describing emotions and daily life span or life span from the time they started creating poems. Therefore, the poet has to find new phrases or symbols to attract readers that they think deeply. Madhusudan Thapliyal expertly created newer phrases, symbols, epitomes, similes in his latest poetry collection ‘Bagh ka Bon (Forest of Tigers).
The subjects of in 53 poems of the said poetry (as philosophy, thirst, hunger, migration environment, blind faith, changing rural Garhwal, new State Uttarakhand) collection are also same those are burning issues of human beings and Garhwal. However, Madhusudan offers these subjects newness, novelty, originality, freshness, energy, loveliness from his new similes, images.
A few examples of those new symbols are as follows-

The poems of present collection are of free verses but are very poetic and readers would like to repeat in their mouth.
The present poetry collection 'बाघ का बोण’ has its importance in developing and evolving Garhwali poetry because the poems are not just a cameraman works by the poet but the poet compels readers to think and rethink about the issues taken by Madhusudan.
Bagh ka Bon 'बाघ का बोण’ is witness that the place of Madhusudan Thapliyal is same as critics place T.S. Elliot, Ezra Pound, Jules Laforgue, Anya Utler, Lidija  Dimkovska, Uwe Kolbe, Ales Stiger, Andre Veltner for modernizing the poetry of their respective languages.

History of Meer Mughal Attacking Garhwal

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -148

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -395

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)
After getting information about insult to Mughal Envoy by Garhwal King, Shahjahan ordered his commander Meer Mughal to capture Garhwal King and get him at Mughal court.
Meer Mughal and his army surrounded Garhwal from three sides or two sides. Prithvipati Shah came to the site with his army. There was a narrow valley between two hills in Dehradun region. There was plain land too there. Prithvipati asked Meer Mughal to have one to one fight between them. Prithvipati cut hand of Meer Mughal. Prithvipati killed Meer Mughal. Mughal army ran away from the battle field.
Thie above remarks are of Maularam who wrote from the folklores.
Muslim writers did not write anything about Meer Mughal. However, Muslim writer ( Ma’assir-al-Umra) wrote about Meerut-Saharanpur regional commander Karodi Mirza Mughal planning for  attacking Dehradun. There is nothing written more about Karodi Mirza Mughal by Muslim historians.

History of Conspiracy by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan for Dividing Garhwal Kingdom

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -149

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -396

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Garhwal King Prithvipati Shah attacked a couple of Himachal Kingdoms including Sirmaur. Most probably, the Kumaon and Sirmaur Kings (Himachal) and other  Himachal kings complained to Shahjahan about Prithvipati Shah and compelled Shahjahan to attack on Garhwal Kingdom.
Shahjahan sent a Farman (order) in 1653 AD (28 Jamudas, Sani Hijari 1064) to Mandhata Prakash the king of Sirmaur. The Farman states that Shahjahan deputed the Kangda and Jammu commander Airijkhan to attack Garhwal Kingdom. Shahjahan asked Sirmaur King Madhata Prakash to help Airijkhan. Emperor Shahjahan laid down the following preposition after winning Garhwal-
1-The part of Garhwal nearby Kumaon would be given to Kumaon
2-The nearby Sirmaur portion of Garhwal Kingdom would be given to Sirmaur
3-Balance parts would be part of Mughal Empire
It is not clear about Airijkhan attacking on Garhwal and how many times he attacked. Due to death of Mandhata Prakash the planning was not successful but Shahjahan was pleased by the works of Airijkhan and offered him awards.

Chhween Bath: the First Garhwali Interview Collection Book

Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2281
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of ‘Chhween Bath’ A Interviews Book by Virendra Panwar

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

We live in the era of interviews. Anchors interview celebrities in TV converse shows, journalists take interviews of premiers of a country. Today, in the era of social media, people interview each other on social media. Everybody is interviewing everybody. After printing media and broadcasting media came in existence the interviewers take interview literature creative to know their insight.
Interviewing the literature creative provide various types of information those were not possible in normal course. For example interview gets information about work habits of creative; views on past literature, present and future; social conditions in different course of literature; social changes those changing the literature, aspects of literature in terms of subject and style etc.
As far as Garhwali language literature is concerned, taking interview and publishing it is very new. Due to scarcity of newspapers or magazines the interview literature did not develop till 1987 when Bhishma Kukreti published first Garhwali language interview with late Arjun Singh Gusain the editor of Hilans in Dhad. From then, interview literature developed very well. Virendra Panwar took the lead in taking interviews of various literature creative and publishing them regularly.
Chhween -Bath is the first book of interview collection in Garhwali language and works of Panwar should be appreciated.
There are 31 (thirty one) interview published in Chhween-Bath. There are different types of literature creative whose interview taken by Virendra. The creative are poets, legendary singer, foreign language research scholars, historian, critic curatives, prose makers, cartoonists, drawing artists of magazines, story tellers, editors etc.
Virendra took pain in constructing questions. That shows that veteran Garhwali critic Virendra Panwar knows that appropriate questions bring out the insight of interviewed ones.  His questions offer the interviewed ones to open various insights, aspects of literature and society and views of the interviewed ones. The aims and intents of interviewer Panwar were to get the best out from the interviewed ones and Panwar had been successful in his intents for taking hidden aspects of literature.
The present book ‘Chhween –Bath’ opens many new aspects of Garhwali and Kumaon literature (arts and crafts) and Internet medium literature those were unknown to many creative too.
‘Chhween-Bath’ the interview collection is one the mile stones in the history of Garhwali Literature.
The works of Virendra Panwar would be judged same as the works of William Packard, Alex Cigale, Alex Dueben, Sarah Fay, Peter Orr, Joshua Barnes, Michael Lee Johnson, Maria Shriver, Liz Logan, Elsebeth Pancrazy in intervening crafts.

Kachaaki: Garhwali Novel Criticizing Sorcery, Witchery, Necromancy (Blind Faith)

Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2281
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of ‘Kachaaki’: a Garhwali Short Novel by Dr. Umesh Chamola

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

‘Kachaaki’ a Garhwali novel hits hard on sorcery, witchery, necromancy and also tells that whatever you do you will get it back in this life only.  The Novel ‘Kachaaki’ is a short form of Novel written by a poet, novelists, short story writer, folk literature collector,  and social activist Dr. Umesh Chamola.
The present Garhwali novel deals with the problem of blind faith on Sorcery, Witchery, and Necromancy etc even in the era of information. Masanti a widow and a step mother of the main character Deepa wants to protect her step daughter from the influence of her in laws. Masanti advises Deepa to have Jadu-Tona tactics to get rid of influence of her in laws sides. Deepa obeys her step mother and at the end she has to separate from her husband. Masanti finds that her deeds are before her and her past sinful deeds are now her enemies.
There are four main characters in the novel Masanti (step mother), Deepa, Prabhat (husband of Deepa), Jeevanand (the astrologer). The novelist is able to develop the characters of each character for constructing the story. Each character seems be real from present rural Uttarakhand. The characterization and dialogues for each character make the novel interesting and also create curiosity for readers finishing the novel till end in one sitting. The social novel is also offer moral preaching too.
Novelist Dr. Chamola is able to create various emotions required making novel exciting.
The events and incidents of novel look like as if the readers are habitual of such incidents in real world. The setting of novel provides the realism of present Garhwal.
Dr Umesh uses third person narration style in illustrating the incidents.
The language and dialogues are simple and phrases and proverbs used by the novelist create speed and energy in the novel. The simple language is positive aspect of the novel.
The timing of story is not limited to first part of twenty first century but the timing is also suitable for past and future.
The novel is interesting and moral oriented. There has been vacuum of Novel writing in modern Garhwali literature.  Dr. Umesh Chamola should be credited to fulfill the vacuum by publishing his second novel in Garhwali. The international critics would place the position of Dr. Chamola as they position novelists Zayd Mutte’ Dammaj, Stefan Zeromsky, Witold Gombrowicz, Pedro Guilherem-Moreira, J.Alencer, Clarice Lispector, Albert Camus, Marquis, Jose Maria Arguedas, Romulo Gallego, Patrick Suskind, Mari for developing their respecting language novel genre.
