The great Indian Singer and poet sows his concerns over corruption his recent poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’

                                        Literature on Corruption in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is 44th in corruption position

Theatre groups as People’s Theatre group of Nalitabari, Muktagacha theatre group have been busy in staging  plays related to corruption to participate their contribution against corruption. The corruption is not the national or political problem but a human problem

Shariful Islam  (2010) published a remarkable book . ‘Politics –Corruption Nexus  in Bangladesh’ . Islam shows the reasons for corruption in Bangladesh and simultaneously suggest the government to take holistic approach to tackle the issue of corruption.

Humayun Azad (1947-2004) is still an idol for Bangladeshi intellectuals to raise the voice against corruption. Humayn Azad wrote tens of columns, poems against social and political injustice, hypocrisy and corruption in Bangladesh

                                                   Corruption in Azerbaijan
The country comes at 45th in corruption from top to least corrupted counties.

There are voices against corruption in the country. For example , Aynur Ramazanova did research and wrote thesis about “ Challenges issue of corruption in Azerbijan Universities”.

                                     Poems on Corruption in Uganda
(46th position in corruption from top)

Freed Munagomba Musis (37) runs IATM-11  (Anti Corruption Theatre Movement) dance group which stages plays  to fight against corruption in Uganda

Kovusingve Vivien wrote a very amusing article on Internet about corruption. This satirical and humorous article is one of the best articles which attract the attention of readers . Vivein visualizes the  Corruption as human as

                       Who is Corruption?

CORRUPTION! We talk about him. The young and old alike

Before some of us born , corruption lived. He is agreat great grandfather, grand father ,and father to most of us…….

                            Who mothered corruption?

No one seems to know about mother of corruption…However, what is definite that he was raised in such a way that he has the ability to create false and temporary satisfaction to those who surrounds him or who are his associates …..

                    How friendly is Corruption?

Oh ! he is so friendly. He welcomes every one who invites him to be a friend……

               Where can you find Corruption?

           Try everywhere.

This man is situated everywhere around the world, so it wouldn’t be hard for you to find him…..

He is nice but dangerous……

So my advice for you that you had  better watch out for him.

Example of personification in prose writing”

Bhishma Kukreti did same experiment to personify the corruption in a couple of satirical articles against corruption published in Garh Aina (a Garhwali (Indian) language daily paper being published in nineties from Dehradun,  India.  Puran Pant another prominent Garhwali (Indian) language satirist also personify corruption in his satirical poetries published in Garhwali Dhai (a weekly is being published from Dehradun, India) .

If the readers read the Garhwali (Indian)  poem “Kathgai Khailya’ , Narendra Singh Negi tries to personify corruption in different style. He made corruption or bribe as eatables-- pudding, rice etc.

                               Corruption in   Timor-Leste
The position of Timor-Leste is 47 in corruption,

Charles Scheiner (2004) critically analyzed the reasons behind corruption in oil rich country Timor-Leste and provided solutions too in his remarkable research paper ‘Can Timor-Leste Avoid  The Resource Curse?’

Kathga Khailya Re and  Education System Being Free of Corruption

                                                                     Bhishma Kukreti

(Abstract: In this write up, the author talks about characteristics of corrupt free education system, types of corruption in education system and poems about corruption in Syria, Armenia and other countries. )

(This write up is 11th part of Analyzing Kathga Khailya a Garhwali poem by Narendra Singh Negi and poetry on Corruption from 150 countries)

Narendra Singh Negi, one of the famous most Indian singers did not mention about education system in his Garhwali (Indian) language poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’ but when he writes

Niyuktyun kee ras malai . transfron ko halva

Halva re , Sohan halva

Niyuktyun kee ras malai . transfron ko halva

Mana ki bhagma tera , chelon ko jalva

Chelon ko jalva , chelon ko jalva

Bindi mitho ni khalauyu tyun sugar badhi jalo re

Bindi na sapod …….

(The bribery in appointment is equal to Rasmalai (milk pudding) and the bribery in transfer is similar to Sohan halva (a type of sweet pudding). There are  spectacular activities by disciples (means agents of officer or leader)  and they (agents or intermediates) get fabulous  reward from corruption )

Those who know Uttarakhand well, they are aware about corruption in appointment and transfer in education system in Uttarakhand province of India. Narendra Singh Negi hints about corruption in education system in the poem when he satates C’Chelon Ko Jalva’

World Education Forum Dakar Framework (2000) shows its worry over corruption in education by stating, “Corruption is a major drain on the effective use of resources for education and should be drastically curbed”.  The forum cautions that corruption in education is more dangerous than corruption in other sectors due to its long term effects. Corrupt education system blocks equality and brings down the quality of education. Low quality of education due to corruption is not effective in eradicating poverty. Corruption in education system creates future citizens who don’t believe in law and order of the country or even they don’t believe in need of code of conducts necessary for  humanity. Students lean short cut in getting results and don’t believe in the value of efforts in life.

Stephen Heyneman (2002) pints out following characteristics of Education System Free of Corruption:

1-Equality of access in opportunity of education

2- Evenhandedness in education distribution and fair practices of distribution of educational materials.

3- Transparency and Fairness in selection in higher education and specific training education

4-Fiarness in accreditation at all levels

5-Fairness in acquisition of goods and materials for education

6-Maintainence of code of conducts by administrators and teachers in private or public education system

Types of Corruption in Education System

There are various types of corruption in education system

1-Corruption in Selection of employees in education system

2- Corruption in selection of education materials and syllabus

3- Corruption in Selection of students at all levels of studies

4- Corrupt procedure in Accreditation

5- Corruption is various supplies

6-Due to corruption, less spending in education system

7- Professional Misconduct:

J.M. Braxton and A.E, Bayer (1999) laid down the professional misconducts as major source of corruption in education system. These are –

7A-accepting gifts or rewards for selection

7B-Assigning grades of students as per race, region, ethnicity, culture and other  attributes

7C-Forcing students to adopt a different religion, culture, philosophy, personal values (as in past Christian missionaries used to do),

7D-Harrasing a particular student or group of students

7E-Forcing students to study a particular publisher’s books or making syllabus as per publisher’s pressure (teacher taking gifts from publishers or manufacturers),

7F- ignoring shortage or gap in education system

7G-Using institution’s property for commercial use for self benefits

Most or all the scholars as Chapman (2002), Levecic and Downes (2004), Pena and Rodriguez, Lehola, Das et all (2005) , Theo Eitcher (2006), and hundreds of researchers , who did researches on corrupt education system advocate that transparency is the first factor in curbing corruption in education system

The Garhwali poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’ by Negi state directly or indirectly that curbing corruption in school, controlling corruption in higher education institutions, curtailing corruption in technical institution, stopping corruption in education system is the responsibility of each citizen.

                                                  Poems about  Corruption in Syria

Syria comes 48th in corruption list from top.

Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998) was a prolific poet of Arab world. Nizar wrote love poetries  (got sharp criticism from conservative critics) and political poems criticizing rampant or widespread corruption of Arabic dictators. Nazir’s poems not only criticize the political orders but these poems also criticize ordinary people and poets who do not raise their voices against wrong happenings

There is no surprise that one of the famous most Indian singers Narendra Singh Negi (a Garhwali language poet of India) wrote, compose and sung many Garhwali (Indian) poems and he wrote, compose , sung the poem on corruption lately when he saw  the situation  of corruption worsening day by day after Uttarakhand province came in existence ten years back.

Nizar was unhappy about the cowardly attitudes of Arab writers and he wrote an article on the subject

“….Therefore,  the Arabian writer is torn between his “civil position” as a man married to the government and his “artistic position” as a man yearning to cheat on his wife “the government,” but cannot carry out for the sake of the children’s future and the family honor!

Until we find the great courageous Arab writer who can tear out his certificate of marriage with the authority, and commit adultery even once, literature books will remain for us far from interdiction and confiscation, exactly like housekeeping books!”

                              Poems Corruption in Nicaragua

Corruption wise Nicaragua is on 49th position in world corruption map

Poets from both the time pre revolution and after revolution, as Ernesto Cardinal wrote poetries about the evils of corruption.

Before revolution, long back in nineteenth century, Ruben Dario (1867-19160 wrote many verses regarding freedom, social consciousness and corruption.

Dario wrote, “Poetry will exist as long  there is problem in life an death….There are no schools , there are poets”

               Corruption in Lebanon

The position of Lebanon is 50th in corruption index from top

There have been violent protests in Lebanon against corruption, cronyism and party politics.

                             Corruption in Ecuador

Ecuador is on 51st position in the list of corruption

                      Corruption in Belarus

Belarus is just after in corruption index from top

               Corruption in Niger

Niger comes after Belarus in corruption list

                 Corruption in Madagascar

The country’s position in corruption list is fifty-four

                   Corruption in Eretria

Its position is 55 in the list from top

                        Poems on Corruption in Armenia

Armenia ‘s position is 56th in corruption from top

A migrated very famous poetess (whose poetry books were sold in black) Alicia Ghargossian wrote many poems against corruption

The International Istanbul Poetry Festival winner Artem Harutynyan wrote poetries against Armenian genocides and corruption

Before liberation from Russia, Armenian born poet Paruyr Sevak (1924-1971) -(who  was called Poetic Prpphet of Armenia,   had been voicing out criticism against corruption by Soviet rule.

From Indian point of viw, the prophet of Garhwali (Indian)  Music , Narendra Singh Negi had been voicing his concern for soaring corruption in Uttarakhand province of India through various platforms. Negi’s previous music album ‘Nauchhami Narayan’ up sets very much previous chief Mninister Naryan Datt Tiwari. It is news that the present leadership of all political parties specially  current ruling party Bhartiy Janta Party in Uttarakhand of Indian province are feeling afraid of the newly launched album ‘Kathga Khailya’

Narendra Singh Negi Shows Strong Relationship among Corruption Inflation and Poverty
                        Bhishma Kukreti

(Abstract: In this write up, author analyzes the stanza of poem Kathga Khailya about inflation, poverty and corruption. the author briefs about research findings which show relation between corruption, inflation and poverty. the author also briefs about poems on corruption in counties as Vietnam, Tanzania and Mozambique )
Narendra Singh Negi is popular people singer of Garhwali and Kumauni languages. The famous Indian singer is poet too. Therefore, Negi understands the importance of minimum words to tell the big story in a lyric or verse.

The poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’ by Narendra Singh Negi is the proof that Narendra Negi is capable explaining big story within least words or phrases.

Narendra Singh Negi directly shows the relationship between corruption and inflation and corruption and poverty in the following stanza of his popular poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’:

Mainge ki mareen janta , he jantaa

               Kankwe buthele re

Bas kar bindi ni sapod ……

(The stanza means that the citizens are suffering inflation due to corruption. How will you explain them about inflation or poverty? Stop taking bribes  ...)

Not only the knowledgeable Indian poet Negi explains about close relationship between inflation, poverty and corruption but the research scholars also confirm the strong relationship between corruption, inflation and poverty.

                          Corruption increases Inflation
The Harvard University expert Miguel Braun and Harvard Business School expert Rafael Di Tella (2000) brings the proofs that there is relationship between Inflation and Corruption after taking samples from 75 countries for 14 years.

Rose and Ackerman (1988) , Shleifer and Vishnay (1993), Bliss and Di Tella (1997), Choi and Thum (1999), Weinshelbaum (1999), Svensson (1999),, laffont and NGuessan (1999) proved that  there is definite role of corruption/bribery in influencing the market structure,; hence the corruption increase inflation.

Mauro (1995), Knack and Keefer (1995), Kaufman and Wei (1999) found that there is negative impact of corruption on economic growth and development .Therefore corruption induces inflation.

                             Corruption Induces Poverty
Narendra Singh Negi directly criticizes corruption for inducing inflation and poverty in his poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’.

Eric Chetwynd , Frances Chetwynd and Bertram Spector (2003) formulated a theory that “Corruption by itself , does not produce poverty rather , corruption has direct consequences on economic and government factors , intermediaries that in turn produce poverty”. The trio scholars demonstrates that corruption exacerbate and promote poverty (though through complex means and ways).

Chetwynd et all provide following factors for corruption increasing poverty in any region:

The corruption reduces the economic growth and development which increase poverty.

The corruption reduces the governance capacity and hence, corruption increases poverty.

The corruption reduces the chances of foreign investment and domestic investment too and increase poverty.

The corruption provides opportunity for increasing taxes and therefore provides chances of poverty

The corruption decreases tax revenue

Corruption diverts in rent seeking ( Chewynd et all)

Corruption destroys small businesses and reduces employment opportunities.

Corruption inflates government spending

Corruption reduces productivity in public sector

Corruption lowers down spending on social benefits

Corruption reduces trust between society and government agencies and this factor produces hundred of factors to increase poverty

Corruption brings inequality in economic growth and thus increases poverty

The above findings and theory proves that Narendra Singh Negi is brilliant in narrating the poem about corruption that corruption increases inflation and poverty too.

                      Corruption in Vietnam
The position of Vietnam is 57 in corruption from top.

A Vietnamese poetry analyst Michael Arnold spoke in an interview that Vietnamese seldom create poetries because they don’t read.

Corruption is a monster that reincarnates itself from era to era in different form. John   Balaban (2000) translated the work of a Vietnamese female poet of eighteenth century Ho Xuan Huong and she wrote poetries about social and political corruption of her time.

                              Corruption in Tanzania
Tanzania comes in position – 58 in corruption

Green Water Foundation, Netherlands  will very soon publish the Tanzanian poems against corruption .

                            Corruption in Mozambique
Mozambique comes in 59th position among corrupted countries

Irene Nargaard reports that the civil society organization AMMo organized Music Festivals in Maputo and Lichinga wherein  songs about corruption were sung and citizens were awaken against bribe or corruption. Poetry is one of the lethal weapons against corruption awakening.

There is report that these days  (2007) the poem of  72 years old  Jorge Rebelo  written two decades ago for freedom movement of Mozambique or African consciousness is being talked at various platforms’ for awakening people against bribes and corruption. The poem is

           Here my mouth was wounded

              Because it dared to sing

            My people’s freedom

There is a poem posted by Mbizo Chirasha  in African Poetry Chatroom a web site which is very simple poem but awakening poem

……….

 Mozambique

The belief and gift of my poetry

Sweet wine poured to absent, long forgotten gods and goddess…….

…drumbeat of chissano

Today morning blight in corruption

A social anorexia

Recently, Chiris Searle pinned point about corruption in countries as Mozambique in his poetry collection book ‘Doodlebug’ published by Institute of Race Relation, London

Negi  Shows Anguish over  Corruption in Dam Construction and No Benefits to  Locals
                                                   Bhishma Kukreti

(Abstract: This write up covers the stanza of poem 'kthga Khailya re', regarding dam construction and its consequences. the author also throws light on three reasons for corruption in dam construction, disasters and corruption reports on dams in India, china, Lesotho, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Eastern Europe. The author also provide the details of literature on corruption in   Mongolia, Mali, Indonesia, Kosovo , Solomon island, Ethiopia, Guyana)
This write up  is 13th part of analysis of Kathga Khailyau Re' poem by Narendra Singh Negi
One of the famous most Indian singers and poet Narendra Singh Negi exposes various types of corruption his recent music album ‘Kathga Khailya Re”

To become energy state of India, Uttarakhand province planned tens of dams in the province. However, there are confirm reports that these dams are becoming the corruption hoses and there is no sizable benefit to the locals. The legendary singer attacks on dams and no local benefits from these dams to Garhwal in the third stanza of poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’

Biyana chhan dam yakh , laindo ko chh jog

Kumbh nhe ge bhalu apda nahelyo  re

Bas kar bindi na sapod
……..

(There are deliveries of dams and dams in Uttarakhand. However, there is no milk producing caws/buffalos. This year , you took bath in Kumbh but be prepared for diaster)

The poem is symbolic and local phrases as ‘dam biyana Chhan’ which literally means giving birth to dams as caw gives birth to calf. The word Lando ‘ means milk producing caw or buffalos , Lando ko jog ‘ means there is no milk producing caw or buffalo. Milk producing animal means the richness for the master.

By this stanza, Negi directly tells that the dams are many but these dams are the centres for corruption, these dams are worries for coming disasters and these dams do not provide any benefit to local people.

Dams are becoming the concern area for every human being in this world.

All over world, dams are becoming powerful prone to corruption. Michel H Weihen (1999)  accounted three major reasons for dams attracting corruption

1- Complexities in decision making structure, complexities in contracting structures

2- Many social and economic players are involved in the dam project who either get benefits or they suffer.

3-There are complexity of complexities in planning, decision making and execution

The above findings make the dams prone to attract corruption in each country.

There are reports that due to corrupt methods in contracting or for other reasons, Ethiopia’s newest dam suffered tunnel collapse within a few days of inauguration in 2010. There were debates on Lesotho water project in 1999.

An official Chinese daily reported ‘Several dams on Yellow river are close to collapse just a few years after they were constructed’. The reasons for collapsing dams on yellow river are  shoddy construction, unqualified workers and embezzlement of fund.

Asia Plus a weekly reported ( January 12, 2010 ) about corruption in dam constructions by  a headline as “ Roghun dam: A Story of water, cotton, corruption and coercion”.

Peter Borshard (May 2008) of  Knowledge Org reported a big scandalous corruption in Dam Constructions in Nigeria

Same way, there are countless reports oof corruption in Yecyreta dam construction,  Argentina (2007); dams in Congo; Idamalayar dam Kerala, India;  Bakum dam in Malaysia; Kosi river dam in Nepal; dams in Brazil; water reservoirs projects in Kenya; water projects in Pakistan; Bujagali project in Uganda and many more to name.

There are many reports about corruption in various water projects in Eastern Europe.

The purpose of dam construction is good and one of the benefits is said to provide benefits to local population.  However, it is experienced that in most of the cases, local people do not get the benefits which are promised to them. This condition is seen everywhere.

Today many countries and regions as Uttarakhand are facing the problems of corruption in dam constructions, safety problems due to shoddy construction and no valid guarantee of offering economic benefits to local population. Narendra Singh Negi made awareness about these three basic problems of dam construction in his poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’

                                    Corruption in Mongolia
Mongolia is also facing various problems related corruption

              Corruption in Mali
Mali comes in the position of 61st from top in corruption

Mali is after Mongolia in corruption index.

                          Literature on  Corruption in Guyana
Guyana’s position in corruption index is 62nd from top most corrupted country

Martin Carter (1927-1997) is compared with literary lions as W B Yeats and Neruda.

Martin wrote many poems about corruption in Guyana when the country was under British rule.

                    Literature on Corruption in Ethiopia
The position of Ethiopia comes on 63rd in corruption list from top

Donanld  Levin  states us a interesting  culture of Ethiopia in his book ,’ Wax and Gold’  . Whenever there is conflict between peasants and local government officers , the peasants compose their ‘qararto’ (war chants)  and recite and improvise their ‘fukkara’ (heroic or patriotic recitals). This clearly shows that in this culture folk poetries play a great role to show the anguish or people. .Therefore, to study the people voice against corruption, the scholars has to find it from oral literature of Ethiopia too.

Poem on Corruption in Solomon Island
The country is designated at 64th place in corruption list from top

The famous poet Celo Kulaghoe wrote many poems about corruption in Solomon island.

                      Corruption in Kosovo
The country is facing daunting problem of corruption

Anti- Corruption subject in Indonesian poetry
Indonesia‘s position in corruption list is on 66th

Binhad Nurrohmat published three poetry collection books (Bau Betina , 2007, Kuda Ranjang, 2008a and Demonstran *y, 2008b). In all the collections, there are poems on corruption, rife with lies, political manipulations, scandals, double speak and politics in Indonesian literature world. Binhad creates poems in satirical method too.

The popularities of his two Garhwali music albums against corruption in Uttarakhand and among Uttarakhandis all over world proved that music albums on anti-corruption subject play great role in making public awareness against corruption. There is no doubt that the Garhwali music album ‘Nauchhami Narayan’ of Narendra Singh Negi had been one factors to make awareness among people against past Uttarakhand  chief minister Narayan Datt Tiwari and congress had to lose last general election in the province.

Daddy Saj )1978-):  Daddy Saj ( Joseph Gerald Adolphus Cole ) of Freetown, Sierra Leone has many similarities with great Indian singer Narendra Singh Negi.                 ‘Kathga Khailya Re ‘Poem Compels to Know Psychology of Corruption
                                                 Bhishma Kukreti

(Abstract: The author puts light on very interesting aspects of psychology of corruption and bribery. The write up tries to make understand the reasons for society, group and individual becoming corrupt. In this write up, the author  briefs about poems on Corruption in Senegal, folk Literature on Corruption in Kazakhstan, Verses on   Corruption in Argentinean , Poems about Corruption in Algeria and Literature on Corruption in Zimbabwe
This write up is 16th part in continuation of Kathga Khailya Re : A Garhwali Poem by Narendra Singh Negi  Against Corruption and Poems against Corruption from 150 countries  )

The lines ‘ bas kar ab bindi na sapod, ab kathga ji khailau re’ of  lyric ‘Kathga Khailya Re’ of music album by famous Indian singer Narendra Singh Negi is not only about the corruption only but the poems also forces the sensible literature critics to find out the psychological reasons behind the corruption and bribery.

The individuals, group or society including politician indulge in corruption due to one or many psychological compulsions.

The psychology is the creation of   response-reactions due to stimulus in mind.

Corruption or bribery is due to certain stimuli cause patterns of behaviour to be expresses as developed reactions.

The starting point of psychology behind corruption is to prevail over someone is advantageous. This advantageous gain over another is the root cause of corruption. Monopolizing the materials or power is nothing but gaining advantages over somebody.  Winning desire is nothing but gaining advantages over others. Desire of winning compels the mind to go for corruption.

Positive reinforcement is another cause of corruption. The acquisition of power and then repeatedly desiring power compel the mind for corruption to get power.

Rewards of power or rewards of advantages are the agents of corruption.

Not wanting other person/persons same advantages is nothing but jealousy. Therefore jealousy also creates paths of corruption.

Domination is desire. Desire for prevailing against others /other is domination.  That is why psychologists state that DOMINATION Desire is the real root cause of corruption. Other corruption emerge from the corruption caused by desire to DOMINATE and those corruptions are interdependent with each other.

C V Magavilla explains states that the corruption is a result of human conciliation   against others interests and the need of self is adjusted even at the cost of others.

                                             Literature on Corruption in Senegal
Senegal’s position is on 70th in corruption list from top \

Lenrie Peters (1932-2009) is not Senegal citizen but was considered as mirror of Africa. Linrie wrote many poems past slavery in Africa about African corruption. He created in imagery style very well.

Osundare published six volumes of poetry and his  themes of poems dominated social and political corruption .

One point is also valid that rich countries divided world as developed and under developed , This nothing but dividing human as they divided black and white. Great poet Aime Cesaire addresses the lies of western rich countries as

Prospero, you are the master of illusion

Lying is your trademark

And you have lied so much to me

that you have ended by imposing on me

an image of myself

Underdeveloped , you brand me, inferior

That is the way you forced me  to see myself

I detest that image ! What is more that it’s a  lie

(Translation by Annette Smith and Clayton Eshleman)

                     Corruption in Moldova

Moldova comes after Senegal in corruption.

Corruption in Folk Poetries of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan comes on 72nd position in corruption grading

Kazak have been successful in reviving folk literature by keeping folk poetry contest on television channels Peoples of Kazakh are hooked to television on Sunday because of folk poetries. The main reasons for gluing by Kazakhs on television is that the folk singers sing the folk songs freely about lambasting to deep rooted corruption and many wrong happenings in power corridor.

Nagim Mendygaliey composed many songs against corruption in an album

                                 Verses on   Corruption in Argentinean
Argentina comes after Kazakhstan in corruption

The corruption in Argentina is not new from centuries. Therefore, prominent  poets of any age  as Lugone , Borges, Molinari and Orozco touched corruption in their poetries

                                  Poems about   Corruption in Algeria

Algeria comes on 74th position in corruption from top.

One of the famous most Indian singers, music composer  and Garhwali (India) poet  Narendra Singh Negi is an activist too for many social causes as making Gairsain a capital of Uttarakhand province (because the mountainous province should have capital in hills only) , corruption and protection for local languages and culture.

Surprisingly the singer , music composer and poet of mountainous area Amazigh of Argentina late Matoub Launes (1956-1998 )has many similarities between him and Negi of India . Both composed music, bothe are famous for promoting folk literature through audio--visual medium. Both are famous to fight corruption through creating poetries and singing those anti-corruption songs too. Both belonged to hill areas.

                                Literature about Corruption in Zambia
The position of Zambia is 75 on country wise corruption list

Peter J Henroit (2007) provides us the scholarly paper on “Corruption in Zambia : Is it Inviatable ? Can We Stop It?”. Henroit delas with following points in his well researched paper :

1- Corruption is worse than ”expected “ in Zambia

2-Corruption threatens Zambia’s future

3-Corruption is not inevitable in Zambia

4- Corruption can be defeated in Zambia

This author came to read a very good prose satire in a web site naming Kalaki’s Korner wherein Kalaki  (June , 29, 2011) posted a satirical story Death of Corruption , Kukreti calls the satire one of the sharpest and humorous  satirical  stories  of the world.

               “  Death of  Corruption

It was Monday morning, and Sara and I were cremated at the back of the packed Cathedral of Holy Hypocrisy…

…….‘And now , as we come to the end of this funeral service , I ask you all to join the choir in Hymn no 666, , to Corruption I surrender sung to the tune of jesus I surrender

 To Corruption I surrender ,

All from Him I freely I take;

I will ever love and trust Him

I am always on the make …..

To corruption I surrender

Give me money, wholly mine

Let me feel the Holy dollar

Never know it is crime…….”

Do you Agree that  Narendra Singh Negi Accusing Uttarakhand Chief Minister D Nishank in ‘Kathga Khailau Re’?

                                                Bhishma Kukreti
(Corruption in American countries, Corruption in African nations, Corruption in Asian countries, Corruption in European countries, Corruption in Pacific countries)
The music album of Narendra Singh Negi has been successful in stirring the Uttarakhandi psych. This author came to know from friends and relatives in Garhwal that the said music album against corruption is the talk of rural Garhwal too. There is public discussion, debate and talk at Pandera. Bisaun, tea stall, chauk man about corruption prevailing in all central, state and district government departments.
The common men hate corrupt officials but can’t do anything because corrupt officials are more powerful than the people in all respects.
There is discussion of the said music album among intellectuals in and outside of Uttarakhand .
This author was reading an article of Vimal Negi the editor of highest selling Garhwali fortnightly newspaper ‘ Uttarakhand Khabar Sar (5th June to 15th June 2011). The heading is ‘Man gaye tu Bada Nishank, Mil gaye Tujhe pure Ank’ Yank Bad ‘Ab Kathga Khalau Re’
The learned editor Vimal Negi indirectly makes us understand that  Narendra singh Negi accused sharply to the chief minister Dr ramesh Nishank for ienhancing corruption in Uttarakhand.
Vimal Negi sarcastically mentions about an audio caste released by some Doon Ratna Pratap Singh Parwana. The audio caste is nothing but a Chamchagiri of Dr Nishank . Parwana gave full marks to Dr ramesh Nishank for his problem solving capacity of Uttarakhand.  Vimal Negi raised the question about reliability of Prwana’s statemnet that there is no problem in Uttarakhand because of Dr Nishank.
Vimal Negi states that Narendra Negi did not mention the name of any political leader in his music album wherein he accused the authority for being corrupt. Vimal  Negi repeatedly state in his article that though Indian legend Narendra Singh Negi did not mention the name of Dr Nishank but ……….
My simple question to my members friends is “Do you agree that Narendra Singh Negi accused the Uttarakhand Chief Minister in the music album ‘Kathga Kahailya re?

Kathga Khailya of Negi and the question of  Corruption in Developing and Underdeveloped  Countries is due to Colonization and Westernization?
According to Osaba the definition of corruption is “  A form of antisocial behaviour by an individual or social group which confers unjust or fraudulent benefits on its preparations, is inconsistent with the established legal norms and prevailing moral ethos of the land and is likely to subvert or diminish the capacity of the legitimate authorities to provide fully for the material or spiritual well being of all members of society in a just and equivalent manner”
While doing research on poetries about Corruption, this author came to have many articles, quotations and statements from genius intellectuals and literature creators of poorer countries than rich countries that the corruption in these countries is because of colonization and race for becoming westernized by non western people. The scholars provided very well thought and analyzed theory about the causes corruption as westernization and colonization and consequences of that corruption
Katharine Slattery  (1998) wrote in her article” Corruption as Consequence of Colonization- as Portrayed Achebe’s  African trilogy” about corruption in African tribe.
The tribes were unified, by kinship bonds, democratic and unified allegiance to their gods. When British came they destroyed their bondage of kinship society, There was no system of king in many tribes of Nigeria. However, British selected a person (usually rich and possessed a kind of  some social authority , made him ‘Chief 9unheard in Africa) through threat and bribery of richness and power. The person accepted the greedy or fleshy post . As soon as the person became ‘Cief’ and became powerful due to British’s  corrupt methods, the person started becoming more greedy for wealth, authorities and power. This way corruption started and this practice poured towards lower levels.
Even the so called facilities as roads, cars, houses, modern way of living  by British were offered to their selected ‘Chiefs’ or where they could get commercial benefits. This way people came to know the effects of power and corrupt methods speeded
Munyae m Mulinge and Gwen Lesetedi (1998)  proved by historical references and scholar references that the role of colonization in entry and  increment of corruption is due to colonization.  Mlinge and Lesetedi provided the references of Robb (1992), Nabudere (1981), Tlou and Campbell (1984), Van Zwanenberg(1975), Collier and lal (1986), Richadrs 1959), Crowder (1968) and many other scholars.  Mulinge and Lesetedi proved that even though the independent countries may be democratic country but centralized way of power grabbing methodologies taught by British is still there in lowest level of administration (village level) . Milinge is right as though in many countries as in India , the kingdom and kings were there but at village levels, there was a different kind of democracy.
John Hooker ( October 2008) proved by various researched references that corruption enhanced by cross-culture methodology. In Indian point of view, we may see that the corruption is more at coalition government level than single party government in centre. Coalition government is nothing but cross culture mixing.
Dare Arowolo of Adekulne University, Nigeria (2010) proved that the corruption started by colonization in Nigeria and the corruption enhanced by more inclination of Nigerian towards westernization culture that is leaving own culture is one of the causes of corruption increment. Dare provided the research references  of Amponsah (2010), Asante (2007), Irele (2010), Kasongo (2010), Macgroul (2004) and many more scholars researches to prove that inclination of people towards westernization is major ingredients of learning corruption
Kathga Khailya Poem in Garhwali: Discussion on Reasons for Corruption
When a poet of very high esteem and fame as Narendra Singh Negi brings a musical album “Kathga Khailya Re” (How Much Will You Take (Bribe)?”, it is obvious that people will start discussing various aspects of corruption. As Narendra Singh Negi hints in his poem that non patriotic attitude and selfishness of people at high places bring corruption , the scholars from the intellectual genere also provide same reasons for emerging of corruption in any region or place.
Culture: Guy Wint and Myrdal (1970) state that the culture of a region is one of the reasons for corruption as in most the Asian nations,”Public office means ‘Perquisites’.” Kohli (1975)  from Indian point of view,  relates corruption with tradition or convention, culture, psychological needs and necessary. 14-Competativenes Index
15- Confidence in Trade Unions
16- Attitude towards Protestants Work Ethics
17-Perception of Control over Life
18- Human Rights Violations
19-Pereception according to human rights
Then there are three aspects of religions- individual religion salvation, reform and individualism
The individualism and hierarchy also plays in each segment of factor to increase or decrease corruption
Fernandez (2001) states that the group/nationality orientation plays the role too and following factors are important to create pro-corrupt culture or anti-corruption culture

2-My happiness depends on the happiness of surrounding me
3- I respect people who are modest
4-I shall sacrifice my self-interest for the benefits of group I am in
5-My relationship with others are more important than my own achievement
6-It is crucial for me to respect the decisions made by my group
7-Even I am not happy I will stick to group if group needs me
8- I shall say ’NO” rather I am misunderstood
9- I am comfortable with singled out for praise or rewards
10- I act same way with all my group members
11- I enjoy being unique and different from others in many respects
12-My personal identity is independent to others and is very important for me
13- I prefer to be direct and forthright in dealing with people

Normally the perception is that the journalists expose the corruption. However, there are instances where journalists take bribe or get favor for certain jobs which in fact ae the acts of corruption.
pkpolitics.com reports (3/6/2009) that one typical example of corruption in journalism is that the criminal silence across the board by all Pakistani members of the press on Nazir Nazi’s abusive language against junior journalist. The above web- site writes further that many journalists have been receiving favors from other criminal and corrupt societies/groups and hence journalists participating in criminal acts or corrupt methods.

Denis Mpagaze also found that the media in Tanzania is disorganized and journalists take advantage of this situation to justifying their corruption.
Musa Xulu (18th March 2010) supported ANCYL (Anc Youth League)   that the corrupt journalists in South Africa must be exposed for betterment of the society.
There is talk in Ghana’s intellectual class that the many journalists are practicing corrupt methods to increase the sales of their periodicals and making periodical sensitive.
John Hopkins detailed many corrupt methodologies being adapted by many corrupt Chinese  journalists, Hopkins further reports  that when  the company interested in launching a new product, service or concept and if the company does not provide heavy bribe to  the reporters , the reporters either don’t report at all about the launch or report negative about company.
David Sirota (27/4/2010) showed his worry on the worsening effects on American journalism on his write up “corrupt journalists “Corrupt Practices Accelerating the Decline of American journalism”.

B- Bountiful use of pictures or using imagery drawings
C-Using fake interviews, deluded headlines, pseudo-science,
D-Dramatic sympathy with ‘underdog’ against the system
E- Emphasis on colorful Sunday supplements as crime stories
These days the viewers of Indian Television channels getting many news as described by Frank Luther Mott. A couple of news channels show the flood of previous years to show the fearful situation
According to an agency which prepare corruption index, Denmark is least corrupt country. However, the intellectuals are worried about corrupt practices by journalists in the country.   Britain and Australia are one the least corrupt country, However, Paul Gilfeather the senior correspondent of Weekend Today (29-30th January 2011) analyzed the corrupt journalism in both the countries.

And questions a valid questions which every Indian is curious to know from Barkha data and Veer Sanghivi (both are famous journalists of current era),” On the other hand , what about Barkha Datt, Veer Sanghivi  who among others, have confabulated with Nira Radia fixing cabinet birth in India?”’
Narendra Negi used a word ‘Chela’ or disciple in the poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’, who takes bribe or indulge in corrupt practices. Negi indirectly criticizes corrupt journalists to who become the disciples of corrupt politicians or bureaucrats and also become power brokers or intermediates. These journalists who act as power brokers or intermediates of politicians are called “Chamcha of Politician” and Negi criticizes these ‘brokers’ in his remarkable poem “ Kathga Khailya Re” . Many poets expressed their hopelessness , anger , distression against corruption in the pure land that is Pakistan . However, the poem “ Corruption of My Paradise” from Selection   of  Poems by Kamini Masood  from Lahore (Pakistan) , aged 13 is very striking and shows hope to the whole world fighting against corruption

                         Corruption of My Paradise (2010)
                I won’t give up
                I shall not back down….
I ‘ll stop the disruption I despise
The corruption of my Paradise …
It is ours to save , ours to decline
A tangled web of frauds and lies
The corruption of my Paradise ….
Stopping corruption is not limited to any country but fight against corruption is beyond national boundaries.
As the above Pakistani poet is hopeful in eradication of corruption if people are united , one of the famous most Indian singers and well read Garhwali (Indian) language poet Narendra Singh Negi is also hopeful in eradicating corruption when he advised the government servants and politicians to be away from corruption in his Garhwali language poem “Kthagai Khailya (How much will you take (bribe)?)            Chirkure Chirkure is one of the famous contemporary poet of Zimbabwe who wrote many poems in raising the voice against corruption, non fulfillment of hopes, aspirations of Zimbabwe after getting the freedom from British in 1980. As one of the famous most Indian  singers and notable poet Narendra Singh Negi blended humor and anger text and music  to accuse those are engaged in corruption in Uttarakhand province of India in his Garhwali language (Indian) poem “Kathga Khailya (How much will you take (bribe)?)  Chirkure Chirkure also blends humor and anger text and music to accomplish a sharp, wicked, hazardous satire which make him different than his contemporary satirical poets in Zimbabwe, Both the great poets of their respective countries- Narendra Singh Negi in Garhwali (Indian) language in India and Chirkure in Zimbabwean language in Zimbabwe have been successful in lampooning the excess and irresponsibility of political leaders and burocrates who stand between the national development.
There is similarities between Negi (Indian poet) and Chirkure Chirkure  of Zimbabwe as both belongs to rural areas and both are well known musicians too.  Narendra Singh Negi of India had been addressing the failures of Indian leadership continuously (his poems Nauchami Narayan, Gairsain are witness) and Chirkure Chirkure also have been exposing the failures of Zimbabwean leadership.
                              Losses from Corruption
When legendary poet/singer brings a music  album on social issues , the discussion starts about that particular social issue as one of the famous most Indian singers Narendra Singh Negi released the music album ‘Kathga Khailya Re’, the discussion about corruption started in Uttarakhand province of India.
There is talk at various levels in Uttarakhand about losses of society, nation from corruption.
Global Infrastructure Anti Corruption Centre states that following types of losses are visible from corruption in any project:
1- Theft of project funds
2- Waste of project funds
3- Increase price of project
4-Increased cost of maintenance, repair and replacement
5-Additional funding costs
6-Reducing operating profits
7-Increased operating costs
8-Loss of opportunities
9-Loss of employment
10- Legal hassles and cost on legal fees :For example, in 2 G Scandal of India , government agencies have to take many activities in hand and each activity costs to government
11- Reduced infrastructure to public
12- Dangerous infrastructure to public
13- Damages to environment
14- Adverse Effects on other projects
15-Reduced quality of public life
16- Loss of earning of common men
17-Increased taxation to cover up government losses
18- Spreading corruption in other sectors or contributing to endemic corruption
19- Loss in nation’s reputation and reducing foreign investment
2- Public frustration

                               Corruption in Ukraine
Ukraine is on 38th position in corruption from top.
There has been an experiment in Ukraine music. Talpash Andriya  sated that in MCGILL University there was an experiment for composing two poems of poets of different ages (Duma pro Slipykh for solo baritone, 12 part mixed choir and small chamber orchestra )  . Both the poems were about frustration and anger with corruption in Ukraine’s ruling class and government . Surprisingly the impact and frustration and anger level was same in both the poems. One poem ‘Sliptsi’  was written by  Mykola Bazhan in 1929 and other poem ‘Yanholi I V Vovky ‘ was written in 1996 by Woldymyr Tsybulko.
When the choir was told,  the effect of anger and frustration in both the poems was found same. It clearly indicates that the emotions against corruption are same and time or era changes does not change the frustration level or anger level.
Though the poem is in satirical and humorous genre but the readers may find a sourly emotion against corruption in the Garhwali language (Indian) poetry ‘ Kathga Khailya “ by one of the famous most Indian singers and very famous Garhwali (Indian) lyrist Narendra Singh Negi,

 By Leonis Golley –Morgan
“With… my diamonds, gold and rich mineral resources, why am I still poor?
“With… my silvery soil and sand, why go I sleep in hunger?”
          “Why---Why, oh! Why am I a beggar?”
“Money, bribery, smuggling, tax evasion and corruption----the cause of my grief.”…..
                             Corruption in Philippines
Philippines comes 41st in corruption position from top.
Annabelle B Rosell, suggested many remedies to minimize corruption in Philippines in his book ‘Corruption prevention strategies in Philippine incorporation.
Miguel Syjuco published a novel Illustrado on the theme of corruption in Philippines  in 2010. The novel generated international attention and acclaim.
There are poets as Romulo A Sandoval  who created poetry against corruption in Philippines but there is less mention about those poetries in English or there is no translation of such poetries in English that International community  could know about poetries against corruption in the countries.
Jassica Hodgedorn was born in Manila in 1949 but had to flee to USA with her  mother due to brutality, corruption in Philippines in the regime of Ferdinand Marcoo. She is well known poet and playwright. Jassica published a novel ‘Dogeaters and got appreciation from all corners. The novel is all about corruption, class division, violence  in Philippines.
Adnan Topan published  a brilliant article ‘ Challenges in Combating Corruption: Lessons from Indonesia”. In ‘Article’ journal Vol.9, No.1, March 2010

Narendra Negi Attacks Rich Countries for Encouraging Corruption on Poor Countries
Famous Indian singers and poet Narendra Singh Negi did not name of corrupt person directly in his Garhwali language poem ‘Kathga Khailya Re’. But his figurative and symbolic poem attacks many ways of corruption not only in Uttarakhand but also indicating sever attack on rich countries.
In Garhwali language, the phrase ‘Ghoos Khan’ means to eat bribe which means to take bribe. When Negi says that ‘Kathga Khailya Re’ or ‘How Much Will You Take Bribe? ‘ or ‘How Much Are you greedy?’, that means that who ever is spreading corruption that should be criticized.
Indirectly, Narendra Singh Negi cirtizing the rich countries too in the following  stanza
Neta officer ligeni bhori bhori thailyun
Bhori bhori thailyun bhori bhori thailyun
Bahri gen bidesi bank he baink……
( The literal meaning of this stanza is that the political leaders and bureaucrats  take uncountable bribes and deposit that black money in foreign banks . The foreign banks are flourishing)
The banks of Switzerland, Germany take deposit from people of other countries. These banks do not care whether the money is earned from corrupt methods or the money deposited by depositor is black money.  Even at crucial times, these countries do not cooperate in exposing the names of depositors. This practice is nothing but imposing corruption by rich countries on poor countries. These rich countries are just helping corruption in poor countries. Negi in his brilliant poem indirectly attacks these smart countries for helping corrupt Indians.
Rich countries are culprit from many angles in spreading or helping poor countries to become corrupt.
The rich countries support dictators or do funding to those political parties who are their pets
Rich countries provide bribes to officials and politicians (kick backs, Remember- famous Boffor’s Case in India!) to export arms or other materials to poor countries
The rich countries offer heavy bribes to rulers of poor countries for buying natural resources as oil, minerals etc at least cost from these poor countries.
Multinational companies of rich countries pay heavy bribes to high officials and politicians of any country to get business benefits from the country.
Dr Susan Hawley (2000) in his article, ‘Exporting Corruption, Privatization, Multinationals and Bribery’ details about the multinationals indulged in corrupting poor countries and states
1- The multinationals weaken development and aggravate inequality in poor countries
2-Multinationals transfer money to riches which was for eradicating poverty
3-Multinationals create difficulties for domestic business houses
4- Multinationals persuade (by briberies) the government to make policies in their favors than the country’s favor
5- Many other malpractices by multinationals to increase corruption in the country.
Susan Hawley also proves that IMF or world bank encourage corruption in the countries those take loans from them
Joseph Hanlon and Ann Pettifor (2000)  provide data to prove that IMF or World Bank  encourage corruption in poor countries in the article ‘ Kicking the habit, Finding a last solution…..’
Anup Shah (2010) , in his remarkable article, “Corruption”: A global issue  provide references and extraxt of many articles related to subject  of rich countries encouraging corruption in poor countries.
The rich countries and their various government and private organizations apply other various methods to get benefits from poor countries and subsequently encourage corruption in poor countries.

                         Poems about Corruption in Nigeria
Nigeria comes in 42nd position in corruption perception from top
The poem  ‘Prophecy I Blame Game’  by Tasin Otitoju about corruption Nigeria is by readers world wide. The poem Prophecy I Blame Game is figurative and opens many pains and struggles of Niger

In the song, the singers request the maternal uncle of bride to bring Kamdhenu Gay (Kamdhenu Caw). In the song, maternal uncle uncle of bride says that first he could not find Kamdhenu .
