Art Heritage - Paintings

AIPAN (The Folk Art of Kumaon)

D.S. Rawat

On the bank of the Suyal River near Barechhina in District Almora, two painted rock-shelters have been discovered. They reveal paintings of animals, humans and also tectiforms done with fingers in black, red and white colours. There is circumstantial evidence for regarding the Barechhina paintings as prehistoric and representing the starting point of art in Kumaon.

The womenfolk of Kumaon have played a major role in perpetuating the traditions of folk art. The style of painting is locally known as Aipan. Using their nimble fingers and palms, the Kumaoni women have not only preserved the memories of past events and the styles, designs, etc., but also have given expressions to their own ideas and concepts on aesthetic values. During ceremonies and festivals the women set themselves to decorating the floor and walls of their houses with designs and patterns. The floor paintings are usually associated with some ritualistic figures. The floor of the worship room and specially the seat of Gods and Goddesses, are decorated with specific tantric motifs called Peeth. The kitchen walls are painted with animalistic motifs. The entrance doors are done with symbols boding good omen. The material used is the paste of rice mixed with ochre

For the Namkaran Sanskar, a ceremony when the child is given a name, the Aipan on the wooden Chauki comprises motifs of sun, moon, bell, conch shell and the utensils used in Puja.

In the Janeu (sacred-thread) ceremony initiating a boy of the social rituals, the Aipan shows the zodiacal sign of Great bear (Sapta Rishis) arranged in hexagons.

This is to invoke the blessings of the very learned and sagacious Sapta Rishis.

In the Byah (Vivaah or marriage) ceremony the Dhuliargh Chauki (wooden seat for the groom) bears a design of big water-Jar, symbolizing primordial water from which the universe emerged. The upper portion has a crown and at

the center is a motif drawn by four horizontal and bisecting lines making nine squares.Lotus petals encircle this motif.

PEETH

The floor of the place of worship and the seat of Gods and Goddesses are decorated with specific tantric motifs known as Peeth or Yantra, related to the deity concerned. A Yantra is a diagrammatic representation of the deity, and consists of linear or septal geometrical permutations of patterns considered as the plan of the terrestrial places where the deity resides.

For Shiva and Vishnu the Peeth is a square figure drawn by putting 12 to 19 dots, both logitudinally and transversally. In the Vishnu Peeth the number of dots is 19. The dots are joined to denote the cosmic field condensed at the central point. The center or Bindu represents the place where the deity resides. The outer Largest Square is the plan of a raised altar and the internal lines leading towards the center represent the flight of steps. The steps symbolize entry from the earth through the cosmic field to the throne of divinity.

Shakti Peeth is represented by two interlocked triangles forming a hexagon. The circles represent lotus petals numbering 12 to 64. Lines of a square frame the whole Yantra. It is an area where the object and subject meet the central point, Bindu that controls everything, serving as the vehicle of the mind. The circles symbolize wholeness or totality and denote the elemental earth or the material quality of nature.

A common Peeth for all deities including Ganesh and Panch Devatas is known as Swastic Peeth. It comprises geometrical design made by nine-point square. The dots are joined to make nine Swastic symbols within the square. The outer part of the remaining area is filled with wavy and zigzag dashed lines, or of designs of flowers, leaves, conch, shells, petals, swastic, etc.

 Aipan and Other Art Forms

During the last two decades many rock paintings belonging to the protohistoric period have been discovered in Kumaon. Among them Lakhu Udiyar and Lwethaap are well known. The Pahari Kalam (style of painting) probably also developed in Kumaon, when it was being practiced in some of the Himalayan regions. Unfortunately very few examples of this style are available today.

The Aipan (Alpana) is a popular art form of Kumaon, and walls, papers and pieces of cloth are decorated by the drawing of various geometric and other figures belonging to gods, goddesses and objects of nature. Pichhauras or dupattas are also decorated in this manner. At the time of Harela there is a tradition of making clay idols (Dikaras).

'Aepan' or Aipan or Alpana is an art which has a special place in all Kumaoni homes. The word "Aepan' is a derivative of 'Arpan'. A commonly used word for it is “Likhai” (writing), although it is a pattern made with the fingers. Aepan are used as ritual designs for Pujas, festivals and ceremonies connected with birth, janeu (the sacred thread ceremony), marriage and death.

The raw material used is simple ochre (Geru) colour and rice paste. It is mostly women who paint the designs on the floors and walls of their homes using the last three fingers of the right hand. Once the ochre base is ready the artist draws the pattern free hand. Chowkies are made with mango wood and painted with special designs for each occasion. Pattas & Thapas are made directly on the walls or on paper and cloth. Earlier the paint used was made from natural 'dyes. Today, poster and oil paints both are used. We are using the traditional "patterns for cards, wall hangings, cushion covers, table cloths, even T-Shirts. The decorative patterns used to adorn doorways have been adapted for gift tags, bookmarks, clay items, wooden boxes, trays and coasters.
