Dosto,

Devbhoomi Uttarakhand is unique due to many reasons. First this is abode of God & Goddess. This is pious land from where national River Ganga originate. Different kinds of festivals are celebrated here.. like Devidhura Bhagwal (Stone Pelting Fair), Fish Fair in Uttarakshi etc.

So today, we are sharing information about Butter Holi Festival which is celebrated in Dayara Bugyal, Uttarkashi Uttarakhand.

Dayara Bugyal, a district located at Uttarkshi, has something very special to share with everyone. The golden opportunity to play Holi after spring, well here you will not need any colored power. But here, you desperately need Butter, Milk and “Chaach” (Butter milk) for playing this holi.
This unique butter festival is known as “Anduri”, which is held in the month of August. This festival is associated with the villagers moving to higher altitudes for pasture. It is celebrated to express the gratitude to mother earth, for giving a safe and comfortable stay on the bugyal and also for the hope of getting more fodder the next time.
Uttarkashi, a place which is said to be a paradise on earth and the land of God, embraces major pious destinations and festivals. This butter festival is not known to everyone, although it is the most pious way to express our gratitude to mother land.
This festival is said to be the most memorable event for the tourist. The mesmerizing experience of playing holi with butter at an altitude of 3048 mts and enjoying the song which echoed through the lush green surroundings is beyond explanations. It is also celebrated to mark the occasion of Krishna’s lifting of Govardhan Parbat to crush the ego of Indra.
Another attraction of this festival is an amazing combination of the traditional group dance and singing of classical based songs. The traditional “Raso” group dance by villagers is said to be another highlight of this festival. Its uniqueness also lies in its splendid combination of various classical ragas like Kalyan, Yaman and Shyamkalyan etc.

This is the article about Butter Fair by our Member Raju GusaiWith a picture postcard like setting, the Dayara Bugyal in district Uttarkashi has something special in store for tourists this month. The opportunity to play Holi with butter, milk and ‘Chacch’ (butter milk) on the lush green high altitude meadow is a once in a lifetime experience. The ‘Dayara Paryatan Utsav Samiti’, based in village Raithal, is hosting the unique butter festival, locally known as ‘Anduri’, from 16 to 18 August. Besides the traditional Holi, cultural programmes will be organised to make it a memorable outing for visitors. The festival is associated with the practice of villagers moving to higher altitudes during summer. For four long months, highlanders move with their cattle to high altitudes for pasture. When winter approachs and its time for them to leave the grasslands, the villagers celebrate ‘Anduri’ to express their gratitude to Mother Earth. It is their time to celebrate having had a safe and comfortable stay on the Bugyal. And, also, in the hope of getting more fodder next time. The fair is a symbol of nature’s close association with man. It is celebrated to express gratitude to Mother Nature.” This year, a group of young tourism professionals from Uttarkashi is promoting the Butter festival. This has brought a new zeal among Raithal villagers. Deependra Panwar, a local hotelier, says, “We are making an attempt to host the festival in an organised way. We will carry out internet publicity and also field a campaign in Dehradun, Mussoorie and Rishikesh to attract tourists.” These tourism professionals will market the festival. The Raithal village and the group of tourism professionals will share whatever profits there are. The Butter festival package tour is of three days. During it, the visitors will dwell in tented accommodations. Ajay Puri says, “This time we  market the fair to make it commercially viable.  The splendours of the Dayara Bugyal and the uniqueness of the Anduri Utsav (Butter Holi) came together here to create magic on Thursday. It turned out to be a truly memorable event for the visitors. Around 500 villagers and 50 tourists participated in playing Holi with butter, milk and butter-milk at an altitude of 3048 mts. The butter smeared faces of the people present were a sight to behold and the singing of the villagers echoed through the lush green surroundings! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the tourists. Anduri is celebrated to thank Krishna for protecting the cattle from evil forces while they are grazing in the open meadows of Dayara. It is also celebrated to mark the occasion of Krishna's lifting of Govardhan Parbat to crush the ego of Indra. The festival is also associated with the practice of the villagers to move to higher altitude with cattle for pasture. When they leave the grasslands at the approach of winter, they celebrate Anduri as gratitude to Mother Nature. The traditional 'Raso' group dance by villagers was another highlight of the day. The vibrant mood of the people singing in local dialects accompanied with folk music was a treat to watch.

Himalaya Celebrates Shepherds' Return

Andudi or Butter festival gives an insight into the life of the Shepherd community in Uttarkashi of Uttarakhand state. Folk festivals are often indicators of a community's lifestyle, economic status and professions. This video by our correspondent Luxmi, a mountain girl from Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, shows us how the butter festival reflects the sufferings and joys of thousands of local shepherds who have a tough life on the upper ridges of the mountain grazing cattle. In remote districts of Uttarakhand life is full of hardship for thousands of shepherds who spend six months every year on high mountains, in makeshift huts isolated from their families. The reason for this is unavailability of fodder for their cattle in the villages at the foothills. So they build huts on 'Bugyal' -- grassland on mountain slopes - and stay there from early spring to early autumn. In these six months their cattle graze well and become fattened enough to fetch a good price at the market later. But the shepherds and their families stay separated with the shepherds also living a hard life in the makeshift hut with downpours of rain, strong wind and the fear of land slide or cloudburst. The celebration of the butter festival marks of the end of this hardship. As the weather turns dry, the shepherds will now go down to their villages in the valley and later sell their cattle in the local market. Until next spring, they can be with their families. Luxmi who grew up among these folk traditions, feels the festival is a way for the entire shepherd community to express their joy at the occasion of their reunion. She felt that sharing information with others on traditions like Butter festival is not only important for anthropological reasons, but also to raise awareness among people about communities like the shepherds' who otherwise stay invisible. Luxmi has been giving us glimpses of the unknown mountain life in her videos. To watch more of her videos click here.
