‘Kangan Tudan’: A hilarious Marriage Folk Games from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar

Notes on Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar (Uttarakhand Folk Games) Part -7
Event or and Marriage Traditional/Folk games of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar part- 5

Narration: Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar)

‘Kangan’ means a metal hand or finger ring and ‘Tudan’ means to break. Nala rope is tied on one of Bride and Groom after Haldihath. With this Nala rope (cotton tags) beatle nut, rice and turmeric powder and a iron ring is also tied. This whole rope tied on the hand of bride or groom is called Kangan.
‘Kangan Tudan’ game is played when groom takes bride to his house and when all the ritual ceremony comes to an end by Pundit. At the completion of marriage ritual this game is played. Now, the Pundit asks bride to break the Nala rope tied on bride’s hand. Groom would try the rope. If groom is not successful to break the rope of bride, his Bhabhi (sister in laws) would tease the groom and would teasingly, tauntingly say,” Var Har Gyai, Var Har Gyai (Groom is lost the game) ..” Other people enjoy this practice of groom. If groom is successful in any point the public congratulate him ‘Var Jeeti Gyayi (The groom won the game). Then bride is asked to break the rope of groom. Since, the rope is thick it is difficult to break. When bride is not successful to break the rope public teases the bride  ‘Byoli Har Gyai )brid lost the game). Bride and groom try their best to break the rope tied on their better half’s hand and in this way public enjoy the Kangan Tudan folk game.
Now a days, this practice is losing its shape and just formalities are practiced.

Juth Gich Karan (Defiling Mouth): A Marriage Ritual Folk Game of Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar

Notes on Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar (Uttarakhand Folk Games) Part -8
Event or and Marriage Traditional/Folk games of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar part- 6

Narration: Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar)

The literal meaning of ‘Juth Gich Karan’ is to defile the mouth. When the marriage knot tied or marriage is completed or Sat Fere is completed there is a custom of ‘Juth Karan’ in Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar. ‘Juth Gich Karan’ is for bride and groom introducing each other.
In this custom, the bride and groom are told to sit nearby and first the bride is asked to put ‘Arsa’ or Laddu’ into mouth of groom. The bride would take ‘Arsa’ or Laddu’ near the mouth of groom but immediately groom would take away his mouth and bride becomes unsuccessful in feeding Arsa or Laddu to groom. The same action is repeated for a couple of times and public gets joy by this act. When Bride becomes successful in feeding ‘Arsa’ or Laddu’ to groom, it is the turn of groom to feed ‘Arsa’ or laddu’ to bride. Groom also acts as bride. The public enjoys very much by watching the game of Juth Gich Karan’.

Runwa Bhareen Puri- Swal Khilan/ Feeding Cotton Stuffed Puri to Groom: Amusing Marriage Folk Game of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar

Notes on Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar (Uttarakhand Folk Games) Part -9
Event or and Marriage Traditional/Folk games of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar part- 7

Narration: Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar)

This was a tactical game played in marriage party. Usually, in past groom party used to reach bride village by evening. The groom party reaches to bride village where groom party is welcomed by villagers. At the time of dinner, the groom marriage party members are dined separately and Pundit, Groom and a couple of groom’s friends are offered dinner separately in respect.  In many cases, in past, the bride villagers used to stuff cotton in Puri/Swal (bread fried in hot oil) specially cooked for groom and his couple of private friends. In many cases the groom starts eating cotton stuffed Puri and the girl villagers then used to tease groom that he is hungry and does not have sense of recognizing cotton stuffed Puri/Swal. If groom party is aware they do not eat such Puri and girl side villagers inspire them to eat such Puri. This is funny folk game.
Now days, this custom is seen very rare.

Gilli Danda /Tipcat an Outdoor Traditional/Folk Game of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar

Notes on Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar (Uttarakhand Folk Games) Part -11
Outdoor Traditional/Folk games of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar part- 2

Narration: Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar)
Gilli Danda is ancient Jambudweep (India) game before 2550years.  Gilli Danda is very popular rural game of Indian subcontinent countries, Cambodia and Italy. Gilli Danda is also popular traditional game of Garhwal, Haridwar and Kumaon of Uttarakhand.
Danda means thicker, longer stick and Gilli means smaller in length and sharpened corner.
There are two sides for playing Gilli-Danda. In Garhwal, the Gucchi (a dig) is made for keeping Gilli and through Danda and is thrown to direct to other group who are ready to catch Gilli. If Gilli is caught the striking player is out and second player is to play. If Gilli is not caught and it falls on the ground, the gucchi side player will put Danda on Guchhi and the fielding side player throws Gilli to Danda. If here the gilli touches Danda the player (guchhi side) will hit danda that Gilli reaches far. Here again the fielding side tries to catch the Gilli to make out player of playing side. In between the playing side player runs to predestined point from Gucchi and makes run.
This way the whole players play Gilli Danda and runs are added. When striking players are out then opponent group player play Gilli Danda till their last player is out. Now, whoever’s score more that group wins the game. There are many variation too.
