Kabbadi/Holding Hand a Folk Game/Traditional Sport from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar, North India, South Asia

Notes on Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar (Uttarakhand Folk Games) Part -17
Outdoor Traditional/Folk games of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar part- 8

Narration: Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar)

Kabbadi is an old team game of Indian subcontinent and is played across all over Indian subcontinent including Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar. Kabbadi is derived from two Tamil words –Kai means Hand and Pidi means catch. Therefore, it means ‘Holding Hand’.
Two teams occupy half of the area of field and one by one sends its ‘raider’ into other half. The raider has to speak continuously ‘Kabbadi- Kabbadi’ The job of raider is to touch a player of opposite team or many. Usually, as practice, the raider should not come empty hand and the raider comes to dividing line and return again to touch the opposite players. The job of opposite players is not be touched by raider and she/he should go empty hand. The raider comes empty hand without touching opposite player or players he/she is out. When raider touches opposite player or players and come back speaking Kabbadi in his/her area the touched player/players are out. By this way, the players are out and if all players of a team are out the team is defeated. The game is also decided by points.
There are regional variations to in Kabbadi.

Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar

There are three major beats in Shabad composition of Dhol-Damau playing.
1-Uthaun or introduction or raising
2-Bisaun or resting
3-Kansu
Uthaun is played in mid beat (Madhy Lay). To reach to Bisaun the Dhol Damau players use Jank beat (changing the beat). In Bisaun composition, Dhol-Damau play is balanced. To get the Kansu beat both Dhol player and Damau player use the stick and fingers in such a way that beats compel audience to move their foot. In these beats, there is ups and down in beats.
After that, the second phase of Jank is started. Damau player plays greater role in Kansu catch. Damau player performs Kansu beat.
When beat reaches to Kansu the nature of Shabad become fast rhythmic. It is said that at this stage the soul and body of Dhol-Damau becomes one.
Chhagal means the end.
