Please bless us. Hey! Deities and goddesses! Please protect us.

The Kumaon kingdom is ruined. There is silence in Kumaon. The Kings of Kumaon kingdom were prosperous but now, the kingdom is poorest of poor. O Kumaon King! There used to be seven lines of minister in the Kumaoni court. Where have the wealth and pride lost? The sun of Champawat kingdom is setting.

Shaikh and Sayyad Pathans have come in Bhabhar. The brave men as Bhardas Mogul, Savachan Jat and Nilchand Kathayat reached to Bhabhar of Kumaon. O Kumaoni brothers! The things as salt, jiggery and many important goods used to come through Bhabhar and the roads are now closed. There is no group, no army those could protect us.
Four learned old men were sitting from four directions. They were Chaudhari, Bohra, Karki and Tadgi. There were sixteen Samant as Dev, Dhek, Mahar and Fartyalo. There were twelve types of officers and citizens. Everybody sat on their respective seats. Learned said that nothing was more pious than the head thread; there was no greater heritage than the kingdom. As the queen is superior most in honey bee comb, same way king is superior most in Kingdom. The citizen cannot live without king.

The future Kumaon King Trimal Chand was in Garhwal. All the learned experienced men wrote a letter for Trimal Chand with messenger. The letter said,” O great King! We are not safe here. The roads of Bhabhar have been blocked. It is not possible to get salt, jiggery and other goods. You come back and open the roads.”
The messenger handed over the letter to Trimal Chand.  The body of Trimal Chand started shivering; there was tension on his moustaches. Trimal Chand said,” It is not possible dark when there is sun. I am reaching to the capital.”

The four learned old men decided auspicious date for coronation. The astrologer decided auspicious time of crowing of Trimal Chand. The citizen of Champawat became happy and joyful. People started singing. Bhat started singing praiseworthy songs for the future King, Our fort is safe as Lanka. Chand kings are light for us”. The women started singing,’ There is new sun rise on the earth. The moon of second has come up.”
The citizens came to Champawat. People and court officers brought auspicious goods to celebrate crowing of Trimal Chand. This way, Trimal Chand was crowned.

Madho Singh Bhandari as Brave Army Chief

Great Bhad Madho Singh was army chief of Garhwal Kingdom, Shrinagar at the time of Mahipat Shah (1629-1646)
At this time there was chaos in upper Garhwal at the border of Tibet by Tibetan terrorists. The king started campaign himself to calm down the terrorist activities of Tibetans at Niti region. His army chief was another great Bhad Lodi Rikhola and Bhad Madho Singh was his deputy. All reached to Niti valley. It was unbearable cold there at Niti valley. The old custom was that Brahmins and Rajput had to cook food and take by putting of the upper garment. The King Mahipat Shah made new custom that people should cook and eat brad (Roti) and Vegetable (Bhuji) with putting on dress. The King regulated another new custom that people can take Roti-Bhuji from kitchen (Faud or Ruswad) to other places too.
Garhwalis won the war with Tibetans and King appointed two Bartwal generals for Niti valley to check the encroachment from Tibet. Both Bartwal generals could check down the Tibetan encroachment.
After sad demise of great Bhad Lodi Rikhola, great Bhad became the army chief og Garhwal kingdom. The Garhwal King provided the responsibility of permanent solution for checking Tibetan attacks on Garhwal by drawing a border line among two countries.
Great Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari attacked to Tibetan kingdom. The Tibetan King agreed upon peace. Madho Singh Bhandari constructed platforms at the borders of Tibet and Garhwal. In British time, British included the line of control between Indian and Tibet laid by great Bhad Madho Singh and Tibetan king into McMahon line.
At the time of fixing the border line, Madho Singh reached to Tibetan China (chhota Chine). Due to sever cold and continuous fight with Tibetans, Madho Singh fell ill. He understood that he would not live for long. Madho Singh Bhandari advised his commanders not to leak his death information to Tibetans. He asked his commanders to put his body into oil soaked cloth. Madho Singh advised that when peace is restored they should take his body to Shrinagar and cremate at Haridwar.
Madho Singh Bhandari died in China. No information was leaked about his death. After some time, his dead body was taken to Shrinagar the capital of Garhwal Kingdom.

Maletha canal construction by Madho Singh Bhandari

There is another folk story connected to great Madho Singh Bhandari. Madho Singh Bhandari constructed a tunnel on a difficult hill for constructing canal from one are to his village Maletha. According to folktale, when water did not come Madho Singh Bhandari offered the head of his son Gajendra Bhandari to Devi goddess.

There is another famous folk song sung everywhere related to great brave man Madho Singh Bhandari
एक सिंग रंदु बौण , एक सिंग गाय का
एक सिंग  माधो सिंग, हौर सिंग काहे का
The great brave man story had been influencing Garhwalis for many centuries. That is why modern literature creator as Rup Saklani, Jit Singh Negi, Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna, Baldev Rana and many more created various literature in Garhwali.

                                         Bhishma Kukreti
The Ranu Raut Jagar states that there was Pritam Shah King. However, Pritam Shah was never a Garhwali King. The time of Ranu Raut might be from 1803-1814.
In Garhwal, people worship Ghosts, Bhoot by several ways and means. One way is to worship Brave family legends or community legends by arranging Mandan. In Mandan the Das play drums and sing the Jagar of particular Brave Soul or legends and Pashwas or people dance according to rhythm and song contents
Ranu Raut is very famous Legendary Song of Rawat Community. As poem, the poem contains all raptures except Abhorrence in full sense. The readers will enjoy the figures of speeches, proverbs, and many old -new phrases
The folk poem (Jagar) is as under -

The folk song related to great woman warrior Teelu Rauteli of Garhwal if very famous. There is confusion among cultural historians about the period of Teelu Rauteli. A few cultural historians suggest her time around 1380AD. A few cultural historians advocate her time around eighteenth century.

There was terror of Gaudi demon in Sirmour Kingdom, Himachal Pradesh.  Gaudi demon ate half of the population of Sirmour, Himachal. However, now, the Sirmaur king became greedy about his offering half the Kingdom and his daughter to Hari Hindwan.  In greed, Sirmaur King id conspiracy. Sirmour King sent his brave men and those brave men tied Hari Hindwan and threw him into a pond.

Asha reached to the pond. The horse of Hari Hindwan was restless there.  Asha threw a machine into pond and took out unconscious boy of his brother Hari Hindwan.  After some time, Hari Hindwan became conscious. Both the brothers reached Sirmaur and they killed here and there. At last, they killed Sirmaur King.

Purukh Pant: Folktale of a Courageous, Brave, Valiant Legend of Kumaon

Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths, Jagar of Kumaon-Garhwal –Haridwar (Uttarakhand) -39

Chivalry, Gallantry, Graciousness Folklores, Folk Legends, Folk Myths, Ballads of Bravery of Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar, Uttarakhand –23

                                         By: Bhishma Kukreti

Usually, Rajput had been brave fighters in Uttarakhand. However, Purukh Pant was a Brahmin Bhad (brave man).
Bhuwas Pant fathered two sons –Maha Pant and Purukh Pant. Purukh Pant was brought in his maternal uncle home in his childhood. His forehead was wide and ear were as ‘Soop’. There in the village of his maternal uncle, Purukh Pant used to look after herds of animals in Nimathi forest. There he used to lay with his friends who used to build small houses by stones and mud. Purukh Pant used to take buffalo milk directly from buffalo.

Chand King was the ruler of between Kali Ganga and Ram Ganga Rivers. The kingdom was big. Kafaliya of Hat used to pluck ‘Kafal’ fruits for the king. Dahlila people used to make baskets. Bhandaris were store keepers. Kanyal used to clean spikes. Mahar used to look after domestic animals.

The King Narchand was a cruel king. To enter the court, a person had to salute the court dog. Nobody was allowed for performing the deity rituals and Pitar Shradh.

One day, Purukh Pant took his caws to Sundhunga forest.  Purukh Pant came back home without ‘Gajali’ caw. Purukh pant went back to forest for searching the lost caw. Purukh saw that the Dotiyal soldiers of the king taken the caw and tied there. Those soldiers too Purukh Pant to the king. The king ordered to cut the ‘Choti’ of Purukh and blacken the face. The king also ordered to cut the caw tail.

Hopelessly, Purukh came back from the court. Purukh Pant was very angry on the king.  Purukh Pant took the vow to finish the king and kingdom.

Purukh Pant collected Akoti, Gaida, Mahar, Kafaliya communities and founded an army. There were seven hundred army men with Purukh Pant.  The army of Purukh Pant made hard sticks by Ghingara, Clubs by Katauj. They took axes and Basula.  Lead by Purukh Pant, the army marched in night.

They all took blessing from Malaynath temple. The surrounded the Rajkot hills. The army burnt the houses of Dotiyal soldiers. The dog of king started barking. The king ordered his army to slip big stones from top of Rajkot hill. Army did so. Purukh and his army had to flee. The King ordered to capture Purukh pant and also declared reward on the head of Purukh Pant. Nobody could find Purukh Pant.
Purukh Pant changed his dressing and became as Jogi. In the form of Jogi, Purukh started campaign against the rule of King.

Purukh went to his maternal uncle village. Purukh met his grandmother.  His grandmother did not recognize him but offered Kheer to Jogi on ‘pattal’ (leave plate). Purukh started taking kheer but Kheer came out from ‘pattal’.  His grandmother told “You don’t know to take Kheer and Purukh Pant does not know winning Seerakot.”
Purukh Pant asked the technique of winning Seerakot. His grandmother told that Purukh Pant should capture water source that armed forces die by thirst.
Purukh Pant went to the capital Seerakot in jogi (sage) form. His fame was reached to the king. The king called Purukh Pant (Jogi). The king asked Purukh Pant (Jogi) to get something from him. Jogi form Purukh demanded water from water source for his Sandhya.  The king accepted the demand thinking that it would be only a liter or so.
When the army went to take water from water source, the Jogi told that now, he was the owner of water source. Jogi asked money for water. Due to fear of cursing by Jogi, the king started paying money for water to Purukh Pant. This way Purukh Pant got money and again he built his huge army by that money from king.
Now, the king understood that Jogi was Purukh Pant.

Purukh pant attacked to king Narchand. Purukh pant won the war and became king.
After some time, Purukh Pant went to Kedarnath temple. There, Bhotiya women cook were cooking meal for him. Purukh Pant insulted Bhotiya women.
F While returning from Kedarnath, for some reason Purukh Pant was alone. The widows of Chand king army men of Seerakot battle killed Purukh Pant by drawing him into pond.

When Duryodhana saw t Irwan killing strong soldiers of Shakuni, he went to Alambush demon. Alambush was angry on Bhimsen who killed Bakasur demon. Alambush demon was very strong and was great magician too. Duryodhana ordered Alambush demon to kill Irwan.
Alambush demon came near to Irwan. Both killed each other’s soldiers by magic. Both Irwan and demon lost their army. Irwan and Alambush started wrestling. Both were great magician and were fighting in reality and by magic power too. Irwan injured Alambush many times. Irwan cut the body parts of Alambush but the parts regenerated immediately.
Alambush threw magic power on Irwan. Irwan stopped that dangerous attack by his magic. One big snake along with army of snakes from Haridwar came to protect Irwan.  All snakes encircled Irwan to protect him.    Alambush changed his body into great Eagle. Kumbh Mela (fair): The Epic and Folk Tales about Reason behind Kumbh Mela

Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-43

Epic, Marathon, Classic, Impressive, Grand, Mahabharata Folklore, Folktales, Folk Stories of Haridwar,   Garhwal, Kumaon, Uttarakhand – 3

                                         Bhishma Kukreti

Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Haridwar after every year and ‘ardh kumbh’ after every six years.
Huen sang (Xuanzang) a Chinese traveler travelled India at the time of Harshavardhan (590-647); he visited Haridwar and watched Kumbh fair in Haridwar.
Shrimad-Bhagvatam and Skandpuran Purans narrate the story behind celebrating Haridwar Kumbh fair and festival. There was fierce fight between deities and demons. The demon king defeated deity king Indra.
Deities reached to lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu suggested that demons and deities should churn ocean milk for getting ‘Amrit’ (nectar), Demons became ready.
Churning of ocean milk by demons and deities started with the help of Mandrachal Mountain as blender and great snake as rope.
By churning the ocean milk there emerged many opulent materials. Then ocean generated (Amrit Kumbh) a pitcher of nectar.
There was fierce fight for Amrit (nectar0) among demons and deities. The fight continued for twelve days. From time to time of fighting some of Amrit (nectar) spilled in four places -Nasik (Maharashtra), Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), Prayag (Uttar Pradesh) and Haridwar (Uttarakhand). Therefore, due to auspiciousness Kumbh meal (Kumbh festival) is celebrated in these places after every twelve year.  Ardh Kumbh is celebrated in Haridwar and Prayag only.
Kumbh Mela is celebrated at different places depending upon position of planet Jupiter (Brihaspati). When sun is in Simha planet Kumbh is celebrated in Nasik. When sun is on Vrihschik Rashi, Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Ujjain. When sun is on Makar Rashi, Kumbh mela is celebrated in Prayag.
When sun is in Aquarius (Kumbh rashi) Kumbh is celebrated in Haridwar.
