Suju ki Sunari Jagar Gatha: Folk Song, Lyrical Folk Story about Krishna’ Love for a Goldsmith Woman

                    There are two types of Jagar Gatha/Folk Songs/Lyrical folk Tales/Poetic Folk Stories about Krishna in Garhwal and Kumaon.
        First type of lyrical folk stories from Garhwal and Kumaon are derived from Pauranic or Mahabharata base. These poetic folk tales may be love stories related to Krishna or versed traditional stories related to diplomatic, strategy making power or divine power of Krishna. The poetic love folk narrations about love by Krishna or love for Krishna are colored into local culture of Kumaon and Garhwal.
                The second type of rhythmical folk stories or traditional poetic fictions about love by Krishna or love for Krishna by other woman are purely created by local folks and these folk songs are definitely in local cultural customs and styles.
  The following love folk song related to Krishna is created by Nathpanth local Jagri and shadow of philosophy of Nathpanth as the song narrates about Kabir, Dadu, Kamal types of Sufi philosopher. The important aspect of this traditional song from Garhwal, Kumaon is that   the female character is from untouchable caste (Goldsmith). Krishna calls the husband of his lover as ‘elder brother’. That also show the social structure in Kumaon and Garhwal where untouchable aspect persisted but the inhabitants of both societies had bondage.

रातरू होंदि थोड़ा , सुपिना होंदा भौति
भगवानन सुपिना मा देखे सूजू की सुनारी
नौ गज धौमेली देखि , चूड़ियों भरी हाती
आज जसि आंखी देखी , धौळी जसी माँग
रंग की रावली सुनारी विरह वावली।

कनकैक जि  सुनारी , द्वारिका बुलौलो
तब भगवान मंनसूबा ठाणदा , मंत्र  गंठ्योदा
बीती गै रैणि कांठ्यो आई गै घाम -
तै द्वारिका वो धावड़ी लगौंद -
तब द्वारिका बैठी गे घणी सभा
कबीर कमाल बैठिन सुखीर दाद
पंचनाम दिवतौं से कृष्णा बोल्दा
सुणीयाला देवताओ, सुपिना की बात -
मैन गुजराती हिंडोला देखी , फटिंगू का खंब
सबी कुछ पैदा होंदी सोनू कखन आलो?
नाथ की लगदी ये ठाकुर मा बोली -
हे भगवान जन्देऊ मान्यन गर्दनी मालीक
फटिंगू का खंब बणौला चांदी की चौकी
पर सोनो कखन आलौ

                Once in Dwarika, in dream, Lord Krishna saw beautiful goldsmith woman Sunari of Suju. Suju was husband of Sunari. Krishna fell in love for Sunari in dream.  When Krishna awoke, he did not find beautiful Sunari who ha attractive long hair and was with attractive bangles on her hands.

  Lord Krishna called his court. There were great saints as Kabir, Dadu and Kamal in the court of Krishna in Dwarika. Krishna said to   his court scholars and administrators,” I saw Guajarati gold Hindola in dream. I would like to have same type of Gold Hindola.”
  The administrators sent servants in search of gold in Dwarika. Then the question of competent Goldsmith arose. Krishna told that there was excellent goldsmith named Suju in Sujlikot. They invited Suju goldsmith.  Sunari the wife of goldsmith became ready to go with Suju for Dwarika.
  When Sunari and Suju reached Dwarika, Krishna saluted, respected Suju as elder brother and Sunari as Bhabhi (wife of elder brother).
  Suju started constructing Hindola. Sunari used to sit there. Krishna also used to sit there.  Krishna thought that Sunari was beautiful as he saw in dream. Krishna used to see her with affection and Sunari also responded with affection, Suju was angry but could not express his anger.
 In evening Suju beat his wife Sunari.
Krishna wanted to teach Suju a lesion. 
 Krishna broke the under construction Hindola by his magical rice grains. Krishna ordered to kill Suju as punishment. Sunari requested not to kill her husband. Krishna asked Sunari to live in her Harem after the death of her husband. Sunari told that Suju was her life.
Krishna became happy and told to Suju that he was making fun with Suju and Sunari.  Krishna offered great gifts for both and sent them back to Sujlikot with due respect.

             There are many folk stories around Haridwar (Gangadwar, Mayapuri, or Kapila) till date.  One of the epic or Purana folk story is very popular about Hari-Ki-Faidi (Paidi). Hari means supreme god and Faidi or Paidi means the foot or foot prints.
      Shwet was great king. King Shwet was great devotee of Brahma. He performed Hard ‘Tapa’ (penance) for Brahma for many centuries at Hari –ki –Faidi (Paidi) at the bank of Ganges at Haridwar. Lord Brahma became pleased to the Tap of his devotee Shwet. Lord Brahma offered boon to Shwet. Shwet asked that Brahma should reside with lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu at Hari-Ki-Faidi (Paidi). Lord Brahma granted the wish of his great devotee Shwet. Thereafter, three lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva reside at Hari-Ki- Paidi (Faidi). The Hari-Ki -Faidi is also called Brahmkund. Devotees take dip in the Ganges water at Hari-Ki- Paidi (Faidi) or Brahmkund at Haridwar for getting blessing of three lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.  Hari-Ki-Faidi is the place where the Amrit (nectar) spilled from Sagar Manthan  (Ocean Milk Churning)between demons and deities.

          Krishna is famous for love story hero too.
 The character Chandravali is sued different character in each Indian region, for example, in Telgu region, Chandravali is supposed to be sister of Radha and is married. In Garhwali version, Chandravali is sister of Rukmni who is wife of Krishna. In this Jagar Gatha, Chandravali is beautiful girl.

राणी रुक्मणी प्रभो इन बैन बोलदी -
सबू  से रूपवंती मेरी बैण चन्द्रावली
तब समझलू मै तुम रौतु को रौतेलो
जब बिवैक ल्याल मेरी बैणी चंद्रा
द्वारिका ठाकुर खरो दीलो आणों
तब मेरा नारैण कृष्ण पौंछेण लगैन
बतावा रुकमणी तुम खरो मनसूबो
कनकैक बिवै ल्योण तेरी बैण चंद्रा
तुम बणा भगवान बदरी का फेक्वाळ
तब जावा नारैण चंद्रावली गढ़
अपणी चाड़ी को कृष्ण ब्रम तिलक पैरी,
कृष्ण  तब बणी गैन फिक्वाळ
मातमी फिक्वाळ छंउ टीका पैन्याला चंदन
सुणी चंद्रान बोलण लैगे
जा दू स्वांरा चेली , टीको लौ परसाद
तब जांदी स्वांरा चेली फिक्वाळ का पास
तेरा हात चेली, मैं टीकू नी देंदु
टीका -परसाद द्यूलो राणी बौराणी
स्वांरी चेली जांदी चंद्रावली का पास
नी देंदु वो फेक्वाळ वो टीको चन्दन
राणी चंद्रावली तब बोलण लै गेन
वो फेग्वाळ नि छ , वो छ द्वारिका नारैण
    Rukmani inspires Krishna to marry her sister Chandravali.  Krishna takes the form of Brahmin to attract Chandravali.
In other place Krishna become a bangle seller to attract Chandravali. Once, Krishna becomes a poor boy to serve Chandravali.  At all places, Chandravali recognizes Krishna.
 At last, Krishna takes the form of Rukmani and went to Chandravali. In Rukmani’s appearance Krishna told Chandravali is now widow. Chandravali becomes sad. In night, Chandravali and Krishna sleeps together. However, Chandravali recognizes Krishna. Chandravali took the form of bug. Krishna changed his form as bee. Chandravali takes the fish form and enters into water. Krishna becomes sea cat. Krishna caught Chandravali and takes her to Yamuna. Krishna comes in his own form. Chandravali marries with Krishna.

               Gangadwar or Haridwar and nearby places have been pilgrim places from Mahabharata Age.  There is Saptarishi Ashram and Saptarishi Sarovar in Haridwar, five kilometers from Hari-ki-Faidi (Paidi). The devotees do not forget visiting Saptarishi Ashram and Saptarishi Sarovar.
             The Pauranic or epic story and Folktale tell the tale of seven great sages of ancient Bharat related to Gangadwar/Haridwar.
        Seven great sages (Saptarishi) –Atri, Bhardwaj, Gautama, Jamadagni, Kashyapa, Vashistha and Vishwamitra were set to mediating near Ganges bank.  All seven sages were discussing the favorable conditions for meditation. Seven sages discussed the most favorable condition silence for meditation. Ganga River was listening the discussion of seven sages for silence as one of the favorable conditions for meditation.   
  Ganga respected the sages and their need of meditation. Ganga thought that if she would flow like that the sages would be disturbed by her flow sound.  Ganga split her into seven currents that sages are not disturbed.    This place where Ganga split her into seven currents is called Saptarishi Ashram and Saptarishi Sarovar.

There is very popular story of Pando dance narrated by das/Aujees. The story is Arjun-Vasudatta love story. Arjun is sleeping with his queen Draupadi and in dream he sees the daughter of nag that is Vasudatta.
 After awakening Arjun goes to Naglok, kills hurdling animals and meets Vasudatta.  Vasudatta is very beautiful girl and she also fell in love with Arjun. She keeps Arjun there and makes love.
     Here, after three days, when Draupadi awakes, she does not find Arjun. She goes to mother Kunti to get help but Kunti accuses Draupadi for killing Arjun by her. Draupadi is in dilemma and a parrot tells her that Arjun is alive and is in love with Vasudatta. Listening good news Draupadi becomes happy but by hearing the love affair between Vasudatta and her husband Arjun, Draupadi feels envy too.
  Vasudatta –Arjun story is a very good woven story with varieties of emotions in each line.

तीन दिन ह्वेन वीन खाणो नी खायो

तब आंदो अर्जुन का सगुनी कागा
तेरो स्वामी दुरपति, ज्यूँदो छ जागदो
नागलोक जायुं वासुदत्ता का पास
तब दुरपता को साँस एगी
पण वासुदत्ता क नौ सुणीक वा
फूल सी मुरझैगी डाळी सी अलसेगी
तिबारी रमकदों झामकदों
अर्जुन घर ऐगे

This folk song is proof that the folk song creative had full knowledge (if not from any formal school) of 
  Rasa / rapture creation.
               There are emotions as pleasure, dream, grief, anger, zeal, surprise, stunning, thrill, choking of voice, trembling, change of complexion, apprehension, envy, intoxication, fatigue, awe, depression, anxiety, delusion, illusion, agility, joy, agitation, arrogance 9here by Kunti) , dejection, eagerness, slumber, awakening, resolution, insanity, and deliberation of rapture of love (Shringar ras ke bahv) . In Shringar ras (rapture of love), there are all relevant emotions of Sambhog Shringar (Union) and Vipralambha (Separation)
                 In the same story, there is rapture of Chivalry (Veer Rasa) and there is description of energy, optimism, absence of surprise, and there are emotions of rapture of Chivalry as zeal, anger, intoxication, recollection, , contentment, joy , violence, thrill too.
 The folk poetry creative had been wise enough to use figure of speeches very effectively.
             The phrase used in this song  are very strong to create the desired images.
 This is the reason that in Kumaun and Garhwal, Pando dance and song is very popular because there are very effective narration creating various emotions in one story as found in  Arjun-Vasudatta love story.

     Abhimanyu ‘s story brings bravery and pathos raptures  among the audience when Aujees sing the story of Abhimanyu’s entry into Chakravyuh  a circle strategy coined by Drona Chary the Army chief of Kaurava.
 Except Arjun, no other Pandavas knew about fighting against Chakravyuh. Arjun was away in another battle. Abhimanyu heard the story from his father Arjun while Abhimanyu was into womb, when Arjun was telling about breaking Chakravyuh to his wife Subhadra the mother of Abhimanyu. Kauravas killed Abhimanyu by wrong means against rules set before battle of Kurukhsetra. .
 In Garhwal, Abhimanyu Baja Nrity geet is also called ‘Bala Ghnadyal’ . ghandyal is one of the oldest deities  of Garhwal

           The story starts when Abhimany was killed by seven army generals of Kaurava together against the rules of battle for Kurukshetra. Jaydratha  was the brother in law of Duryodhan the crowned pricnce of Kuruvansh/ Hastinapur . Jaydrath kicked the dead body of Abhimany the son of Arjun .
    Now,  Arjun  takes a vow that he will kill Jaydrath before the sun set. Jayadrath hides in his house.
                      Krishna spread his Maya (magic) and the sun sets. Arjun becomes ready to die on a Chita (pyre0. Hearing the news that Arjun is ready to do Armdah (die by fire him), Jaydrath comes out from his hide outs and shows his face at the scene. As soon as Jaydrath appears in the battle ground where, Arjun was ready for Atmdah the sun starts shining and Arjun kills Jaydrath by his arrow.

Beend orJag Jagar  : An Initiating a Garhwali Folk Song for  Pandav Dance

              Pandau dance is a community folk dance of Garhwal and Kumaun. The music and songs are performed by professional and traditional class of Kumaun or Garhwal and the people dance on the Pandau music.
     In Pandau dance, the Das/Aujess narrate the stories of Mahabharata. However, before the stories and dances are started Aides sing an initiating song called ‘Beend’ or jag jagar. In this ‘Beend ‘song, aujees worship various deities of Garhwal and in Kumaun they remember the deities of Kumaun region.
   Apart from deities the narrator remembers all Pandavas –Kunti, Yudhisthar, Bhim, Arjun, Sahdev, Nakul , Abhimanyu too.
  There is specific music tone for ‘Beend’ or Jag’ song
                   पंडौ नृत्य का 'बींद' या जाग जागर
हरि को हरिद्वार जाग , गाँव का भूम्या ळ जाग
धौळी पयाल जाग, छेत्र का छेत्रपाल जाग
गंगोत्री घाट जाग
भांसरी का ताल जाग
तै सातरू जाग
तै मूलु मुखेम जाग
तै तलबला सेम जाग
चन्द्रबदनी माता जाग
राज राजेश्वरी नंदा जाग
खेंटा की अंछरियों जाग
पीड़ी कि भरड़ीयो (सरडी ) जाग

                 Bhim is very prominent character of Mahabharata. When the  Kurukshetra battle (Greatest war of Great  Wars ) started Duryodhan never show his worry from Arjun or other Pandavas except Bhima. Bhima was always great warrior among Pandavas.  As the story states that his one wife Hidamba was from Garhwal (Dr Shiv Prasad Dabral).
            As it is a truth that Mahabharat’s stories had been there in folk literature before Mahabharata epics was created in Garhwal (Ganesh cave above Mana Village near Badrinath and near the sources of Dhauli Ganga  (Alaknanda ) and Sarswati river.
             There is Bhim Shila (Bhim big Stone) on the river sarswati in Mana Vilage which in past used to be a bridge to cross river Sarswati. It is said that this big stone was kept by Bhima for using as bridge, the aim of writing is that the story about Bhim’s bravery is found in every nook and corner of Garhwal and Kumaun.
              The dance of Bhim in Pando dance is very agile, vibrant, with rage and called also and-band dance (where is no rule of dance) . Many times, the’Pashwa’ of Bhim eats burning coal and runs over burning coal too. The Bhim oriented dance is also Bhim Ringon which means to run around circle and then be unconscious by agile dance.

सौ मन का गोला भीम रे जोधा
सर्ग चूलेने असी असमान अपतां फेंकने हाथी

 In this song the singer (Aujee) narrates the big strength of Bhima as he has a club of hundred tons, the shield weighing nine tons, as soon as Bhima comes in the battle Bhima kills Kauravas as radish, when by fear Kauravas climb on trees, Bhima shakes the trees and Kauravas fall down. Bhima throws elephants into the sky and nobody knows where elephants have gone.

Chal Maangan : An Invocating deities  Folk song for Pnadaun, Garhwali-Kumauni Folk Dance

   Pandau Nrity geet (Pandau dance-Song) is a very popular and likable religious and community dance-song of Kumaun and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand.
             Pandau Nrity is a dance of Mandan (मंडाण). Mandan dance means where the worship and dance is performed around fire (Agni devta). The place is usually, country yard, community yard and dancers dance in groups with full vigor. There is no restriction of numbers of dancers in Pandaun dance (पंडोउ-
नाच). The dance is called ‘Mandan (मंडाण) only when there is worshipping of fire at the corner by music instrument players-Aujee/das. Lighting fire by rituals calls the deities. The Aujees worship deities as Bhumipal, Khetrpal, Ghandyal, and Kurum deities by aid of Chandan, Akshat, Roli-Pithai, dhoop-deep after worship of fire. The fire is burnt till the dance ceremony is not completed (Pnadon nrity samapan).
   Male Pandau dancers dance in circle and there is lighted fire in the centre of circle called ‘Bhad or Homastahal. The music instrument players and the jagar singer who is also a Aujee and music instrument Dhol player.
 After Agni Pooja and Vastuk pooja, the Aujee/singer (the dhol player ), perform the Chauras Baja ceremony through music and ritual songs.
  When Chauras performance is over , the singer or Pandoli (who is specialist of Pandau stories) asks for ‘Chal’ which is called ‘Chauras Mangan’.
 The song for ‘Chal-mangan ‘is as under:

   As soon as the Dhol Bajan val Aujee (The dhol player who also sing Chal-mangan Jagar geet)
Starts singing and both Dhol and damau players play Dhol-Damau in the tone of ‘gija-Gijadi..Gija-gijadi’
, the dancers stand in circle and start dancing. The dance of Chal-mangan’ is very slow and creates the rapture of peace (Shant evam Bhakti Ras) .
