Dufraa kee Naubat : a Garhwali Folk dance-Song performed by Aujees in Chait

(Notes on Garhwali Traditional Dance –Song, Uttarakhandi Traditional Dance –Song, Himalayan Traditional Dance –Song, Indian Traditional Dance –Song, Traditional Culture of Uttarakhand )

                                         Bhishm Kukreti
Chait month is the cultural month of Uttarakhand. Aujees play drums (Dhol Damau) three times on the courtyard of their respective Thakurs.  Performances of Aujees have been there from Khas time (before first B.C.) in Garhwal. There are nine ‘patan’ and twenty two ‘padtalen’. Nine ‘patan’ represent nine ‘nidhi’ and twenty ‘padtal’ represent eight ‘siddhi’ and fourteen ‘ bhuvan’’ There is mention of ‘Naubat’ in the folk story of Rajula Malu shahi of Khairagarh when Bijula Nayak performed  ‘Naubat’ at ‘Melchaunri’ and the princess Kamsena (sister in law of’ Malushahi’)  fell in love with Bijula Nayak.
Aujees sing the following types of song and play. There is same traditional song in Vietnam called ‘Quan Ho’. The tradition was started from Ly dynasty (1009-12250. The Quan song is to praise the king.
Daragyala in Tibet is also of similar type of song. Dragyala is about ‘Song of Praise to King and queen of Tibet’. There are many folk songs in Jewish culture as the following Garhwali ‘Naubat ‘songs.

Draupadi Baja Nrity-Geet, Jagar :  A  very Interesting Folk Song for Pando Dance

                              Bhishma Kukreti

Pandon dance is performed everywhere in Kumaun and Garhwal and nobody can describe Garhwal-Kumaun culture leaving Pando dance-song
The style of wordings dialects, song and dance of Pando nach-gan vary from village to village. However, the following characteristics are main characteristics of Pando dance :
1-Mandan- The plain place where the Pando dance-song  is performed.
2- Ag /fire ; mostly fire is burnt in the centre of dancing circle and Aujis also perform rituals before fire before initiating playing the drums and singing the Jagar (Now fire is slowly going out of scene)
3-Saraun- The sword dance is performed at the time of Bhim and Arjun Bjaj dance and at the time of Draupadi-k Chaundo’
4- Draupadi ko chaundo- In this dance sequence, the dance is as if devi jagar dance is there because Draupadi becomes Chandi in the story. In ravain region, women also dance as ‘Chausath kaliyan’ (64 kalis) and women dance with swords in their hand
5- Varta- the story sung by Aujess about Pandavas

                 Psychological Aspect in Draupadi Dance-Song

The following song is for Draupadi dance (but not Draupadi chandon). When the song is analyzed the readers will find that the creator created song with full of knowledge of psychology. Drupad the father of Draupadi is motivating his daughter Draupadi  for choosing her bride-groom from brave people (mall )
Draupad uses word ‘Drupadi’, thereafter he uses word ‘Beti’, in next stanza Drupad uses word’ Kwanri (unmarried) ’ and at last he uses ‘bala (daughter/girl of teen age) for calling Draupadi. The wordings and their uses in a particular step show the knowledge of folk song creators who were not educated in any school but they were knowledgeable and knew psychology of motivation.

The song is about Swayambar for Draupadi that she would choose her groom from Braver the most from braver (mal) . Draupad the father of Draupadi informs her about who are joining the Swayambar and Draupadi says what type of person she would choose.

Pando Jagar Nach ma Kunti Gainda Katha : A story of Rhinoceros in Pando Folk dance

(Garhwali folk Dance Songs, Uttarakhandi Folk Dance- Songs, Himalayan Folk dance-Songs)

                          Bhishm Kukreti
There are tens of story sung at the time of Pando Folk Dance of Garhwal and Kumaun regions by Aujees.
There is one very peculiar story of Gainda or rhinoceros in Pando folk dance-song of Kumaun and Garhwal.
Kunti, the mother of Pandavas sees a dream that instruct her to bring the skin of rhinoceros for the annual Shradh performance of her husband King Pandu .
Kunti orders five Pandavas to bring the skin of rhinoceros. Pnadavas become ready for bringing the skin of rhinoceros.
In the mean time, Draupadi the wife of all Pandvas also become ready with them to help them in case of
hunger, thirst, rough roads etc. However, Pandavas tell her that since, she does not have dress and ornaments as a queen should have she should not company her.
When Pandvas come to Hariyali tal forest, they sees a Sitarami rhinoceros. The rhinoceros was a female rhinoceros and she tells them that her husband is in Gagal forest. Pandavas goes to Gagal forest and they kill the rhinoceros and bring skin of rhinoceros for the ritual of Shradh of thei father Pandu as instructed by mother Kunti.
There is contrast in the story that queen Draupadi becomes ready to share the pain of her husbands Pnadvas  and the wife of rhinoceros Sitarami tells the secret of her husband’ whereabouts. Here, in the story, there is no mention that Pandavas threatened  Sitarami .
The songs have various emotions woven into it. There is curiosity for audience whether Pandavas would be successful or not. The sacrifice of Draupadi and the deceptive nature of female rhinoceros bring different emotions.
The folk song is proof that folk song creator were master of psychology besides being master of form of poetries.

In the Doodhatoli shrine, there is a village Bhamsar (there is government horticulture garden). In this horticulture park, there is very beautiful temple of Ghandyal or Ghantkarn just near to Panjikkhal. This deity Ghatkarn or Ghandyal is also the Khetrpal deity of Bali Kandarsyun, Kandarsyun, Chopdakot and Dhaijyuli Pattis. Ghantkarn is family deity of Kaproli village (Chopdakot) and Ghulet village (Bali Kandarsyun).  There is tour of Ghandyal divta (Jat) as there is tour of Raj Rajeshwari Nanda Devi. The village people of this region take flags (Dhwaj or Nisan) to all villages in the Ghandyal tour (jat). There are figures of flag, colorful flags, coconiut, various figures, and ornaments on the main Dhwaj. The hight of Dhwaj varies from twenty one feet to fifty one feet. At the top of flag or Dhwaj, there is Chanvar.
The deity Ghandyal is famous for blessing (parchari divta) to devotees with ease. The deity Ghandyal or Ghantakarn is the deity of protecting to the region. That is why all the people of the said region participate in the Ghandyal Jat and provide gifts for the deity. The people with Dhwaj go to each village and sing the song of Ghandyal. The Pashwa dances with the Jat and blesses to people on behalf of deity Ghandyal.
The Ghandyal jat or Deity March is celebrated for a month. On the last day, the people dance and sing whole night. People provide gifts to deity. There are jagars of Ghandyal divta or Ghantakarn deity .
The Ghandyal divta is prior to Kantyura era and it means the deity was worshipped at the time of Khas era and Kanait era (before 3000 years back). There is full mention of Yaksh deity in mahabharat and Harivansh Puran.
In every deity worshipping, the Jagri first worships or calls the Khestrapal or Ghantkarn. Historian Dr. Dabral mentions that in past, in most of the village, villagers used to have Ghadyal temple (symbolic) on top of village hill to protect them.

Kunti  Baja Nrity-Geet: A Garhwali Folk Song for Pandau Dance
Garhwali folk Dance Songs, Uttarakhandi Folk Dance- Songs, Himalayan Folk dance-Songs)

                          Bhishm Kukreti

There are many stories sung in Pandau Nrity geet by Aujees the Dhol-Damau (music instruments) players. One of the stories is very popular about the mother of Pandavas –Kunti in Pandau dance sequences.
The story here about  Kunti  Baja song is very  sad as in the song,  the story is either about remembering King Pandu, lakshagrih or death of Abhimnayu  .
The following folk song is about awakening the ‘Pashva’ of Kunti (on whose body the spirit of Kunti enters). The music is very slow ‘Gija-Gijadi’….. The dancer in the form of Kunti spirit, dances very slow and is mostly in pathetic rapture
              कुंती बाजा नृत्य गीत

Mahabharat Judh k  Jad Chaam k Dali Nach –Gan:  The Garhwali Folk song Specifying Reason of Mahabharat Battle

(Folk Dance -Song of Garhwal, Traditional Dance Songs from Uttarakhand, Himalayan Folk Dance-Songs)

                              Bhishm Kukreti
Mahabharata has influenced Garhwal well before Mahabharata was actually created because the stories of Mahabharata were there in the form of folk literature in Garhwal too.
There is one folk dance-song of Ravain region about the reasoning of great battle Mahabharata between Pandavas and Kauravas. This old song states that the reason of greatest of great battles –Mahabharata between Pandavas and Kauravas was a tree ‘Cham’. The story is very interesting and tells us that most of the time the conflict begins by petty matter than very important matters as song states:

The Cham tree is touching the high sky. Kaurav claims that the tree belongs to them. Pandavas claim that Cham tree is their property.  Kaurav and Pandavas started fighting.  It was decided that if the Cham tree belongs to Kauravas , it will  ooze blood and tree belongs to Pandavas , the Cham tree will ooze milk.  Both started plucking leaves of Cham tree. The Cham tree started oozing milk. On the oozing milk, Pandavas claimed about tree Cham but Kauravas started claiming about Cham tree and the battle between Pandavas and Kauravas started battling.

Payali :  A Garhwali Folk Song in Pandav Nrity Geet

( Himalayan Traditional Dance-Song, Folk Dance-Songs of Uttarakhand, Garhwali Folk Dance and Folk Songs)
                             Bhishm Kukreti
Pandav Nrity-Geet/Pandaun Dance-Song is very popular dance-song sequence for all Garhwalis and Kumauni. In Pandau nrity-geet , the story narrators (Aujees) sing the stories of Pandavas of Mahabharata and dancers (Pashwa) dance on the music and song.
The main musicians and singers of Pnadau/Pandav nrity-geet , Pandoli nach-gan/Pandav Dance-Song are Aujees who play Dhol and Damau (drums) and Aujee sing song for Pandav nrity too.
When there is dance-song going on , in between the dancers take rest for the time being. At the such interval, a Pandouli (who dance or is part) comes to the Das/Aujees and request for a new Pandav story or new music of Pandav Nrity-Geet.  The request maker keeps one hand on his ear and by one hand the request maker does performance by indicating the hands to Aujees and sing the following type of song.
The requesting song is in figurative language and with exaggerating words

O! Dami (who plays drum)! I was in deep sleep and had forgotten everything.
I was sleeping on a fine bed sheet and the bed with small bells. In deep sleep I was senseless or unconscious.
My Dami (music player) ! The words of Dhol and music of Damau reminded me  Pandau song.
I came from hill trembling from hills, came crossing the rivers.
My younger brother! You be always young (age of fifteen-twenty five ).
Hey my dami!
You make me happy as bloomed flower and as bee flies (by singing and playing new music.)
In Payali, the requesting person sings the song and Aujees play Dhol-Damau in slow rhythm   .

(Notes on Indian Folk Culture, Himalayan Folk Culture, Uttarakhandi Folk Culture, Kumauni Folk Culture Garhwali Folk Culture)
                                                Bhishm Kukreti
Chait is a Cultural Month for rural Uttarakhand. Due to heavy migration the cultural activities may be less in numbers or might have changed as per need of time, place and class. However, broadly there were following main cultural activities in rural Garhwal around seventies.
1-Chaiti by Aujee’s
2-Other activities by Aujee’s
3- Putting flowers on corners of doorsills by unmarried girls from Fulsangrand to Baisakhi (first day of Chait to first day or Baisakh – 14th March to 14th April)
4- Dance and song programs in the night in village council courtyard. This is the reason that Uttarakhandi call Chait as Nachno or Gano maina.
5- Lang by Badis after twelve years in the village.

                                         Cultural Activities by Aujees

Aujees mean who play Dhol-Damau in all auspicious occasions. The Aujees are very much family members or village members in all the occasions.
