धूमधाम से मना फूलदेई पर्व
नैनीताल: शहर तथा आसपास के ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में फूलदेई पर्व परम्परागत ढंग से मनाया गया। छोटे-छोटे बच्चे थालियों में फूल सजाकर सुबह से ही आसपास के घरों की देहरी भेंटने निकल पड़े। फूलदेई-छम्मादेई, दैनी द्वार भर भखार, तू दैली सूं बारम्बार कहते हुए बच्चों ने घरों की देहरियों पर फूल चढ़ाए और बदले में लोगों ने उनकी थालियों में गुड़-चावल तथा पैसे डाले। सरोवरनगरी नैनीताल के बच्चों में कुमाऊंनी संस्कृति के त्यौहार फूलदेई को लेकर उत्साह रहा। इस दिन बच्चे खासकर लड़कियां पर्युली व सरसों के फूल लेकर घर-घर बसंत के आगमन का संदेश पहुंचाती हैं। फूलों के बदले लड़कियां उपहार में चावल, गुड़ व पैसे पाती हैं। रात्रि काल में होने वाले त्यौहार में इन चावलों को पीसकर सेई नामक व्यंजन बनाया जाता है। बसंत ऋतु के आगमन पर जब घरेलू फलों क्रमश: आडू़ू, खुमानी, पूलम व सेब आदि के वृक्षों पर रंग-बिरंगे फूल खिल उठते हैं। जंगली वृक्षों में भी फूलों की बहार रहती है।

Introduction to the Phool Dei Festival in Uttaranchal

The lives of the people of Uttaranchal are filled with joy and gaiety whenever it is festival time. Several festivals are celebrated with a lot of fervor and enthusiasm. The Phool Dei festival is a distinctive festival marked by welcoming of the spring season, praying for general well being and preparation of special foods.

Description of the Phool Dei Festival in Uttaranchal

Young girls are the keenest participants in the Phool Dei Festival. The girls gather themselves in a group. They fill their plates with rice, jaggery, leaves and flowers. Then they visit each and every house of the locality offering their best wishes. Flowers and rice is sprinkled at the doorsteps of each household. While doing so they hum the notes of a song in sweet voices. They pray for the well being and prosperity of the household. In return, they are blessed by the elders and given return gifts.

The special dish that is prepared on the occasion of this festival is Sei. Flour, curd and jaggery are the principal ingredients of this sweet dish.

Memorable performances by folk artistes can be witnessed on the occasion of Phool Dei. They sing Riturain, Chaiti to greet the festival of spring. As a token of appreciation, they are given presents, money and food grains in return.

Time for celebrating the Phool Dei Festival in Uttaranchal


 This festival is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar. It falls approximately in the middle of the month of January. In certain places, this festival is celebrated throughout the month.

I recall my childhood days. We used to visit our neighbor doors with a bucket of flowers and throwing them at door saying :

   Phole pholee……

Happy Phoole Day !!

This practice is still followed there.
