Phooldei – Phooldei Chhamma chhei

Phool Dei is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra in the month of March. On this day, young girls and children conduct most of the ceremonies. Young girls and children go to all the houses in the Mohalla or the Village with plates full of rice, jaggery, coconut, green leaves and flowers. In the olden times rice, jaggery etc. used to be brought in the baskets of ringal. But now with the changing times, children bring these things in the plates or thalis or plastic bags. They offer their good wishes for the prosperity of the household and are given blessings and presents (sweets, gur, money etc) in return. They sprinkle first flowers of the season and rice on the doorsteps of the neighbours and sing.

Phool dei, chhamma dei.
Deno dwar, bhar bhakar,
Ye dei sei namashkar, puje dwar.

फूल देइ छम्मा छेई,
देनो द्वार भर भकार,
ये देइ से नमस्कार,
पूजे द्वार

This is a big example of how communities in Kumaon are closely bonded and linked with each other, as no one puts these flowers in front of their own houses alone. In some places the festival is celebrated throughout the month.

As per tradition, normally, rice so collected is used to prepare delicious rice pudding called Sei (a pudding made with rice floor, curd and jaggery). Folk singers sing the Riturain, Chaiti and other songs welcoming spring and are given presents, money and food grains.

Phooldei is an important festival as from this date religious ceremonies like Sacred Thread Ceremony (Yagyo Paweet Sanskar) starts. Brothers offer Bhitauli or Ala (presents) to their married sisters. Rhododendron also blooms in this month, though for the past several years rhododendron has started blooming early due to global warming.(D.N.Barola)

Phuldei: The Festival of Flowers in Kumauni
« Reply #29 on: March 16, 2009, 10:37:24 AM »
Writer : BD Kasnial, Source – Kumaon Plus, Sunday Complementary with Times of India

PHULDEI- THE FESTIVAL OF FLOWERS IS HERE. SO GET GEARED UP AND CELEBRATE THE MYRIAD COLOURS OF THIS FESTIVAL.

ANCIENT Kumauni society celeberts the festival of Phuldei – the beginning of the era of flowers or the spring on March 14 every year when the sun enters into the Pisces zodiac sign. Phuldei is the festival to celebrate the oncoming season of spring and the happiness that it heralds with it. Dr Yamuna Dutt Vaishnav “Ashok”, a veteran historian of Kumaon region, says that in ancient Rome, the festival at the beginning of spring was devoted to the godess Flora and was celebrated at the beginning of summer as the solar calendar has been adopted by hill society from the Romans, the month of Chaitra is considered the first month of new year and the Phuldei is the first day of the Solar year.”

On this day the unmarried girls from every house hold of the village rise early and after taking a bath and fully purifying themselves, they collect white ad yellow flowers from the wild plants worship their doorstep by fully covering it with these flowers. They then go to each and every house hold of the village chanting, “Phuldei Chamma Dei, Bhar Bhakar Daini Dwar” and offer fresh flower at every doorstep of the village, wishing them happy and prosperous New Year. In exchange to these well wishes expressed through fresh flowers of wild plants the villagers give them rice, jaggary and some money. After the ceremony concludes the village youngesters return and wet this rice stock, prepare special prasad after grinding the stock. This prasad is also offered to every household of the village.

The beginning of spring has a special significance for ancient Kumaoni Society. During this season, the snow melts on the Himalayas and as the temeperature increases the ever green rhododendron (Buransh) comes into full bloom. Not only the rhododendron but so many other plants also blossom and the forests of these Himalayan foothills fully smear with the beauty of the spring. The Oak grows in the higher reaches of mid Himalayas while Sal and Bouhinia (Kachnar) grow in the valley in this season. In the valley of the western Himalayas, specially in the Pauri region this festival is celebrated throughout the month and young girls of the village offer flowers daily at the doorsteps of their neighbors for almost the month.
