hmm.. ye Bhot Dukh ki baat hai ki aajkal ki Peedi puraane tyoharo, reeti riwaazo ko bhul gyi hai....
Dusre ko culture se kuch seekhna ya kuch adopt karna koi buri baat nahi hai.. But Apne Culture ke basics ko bhul jaana Lazza ki baat hai....

Vat Sawitri Ke baare me koi nahi jaanta... But Mujhe yaad hai mene ek baar bachpan me mummy se pucha tha ki hum log "Karwa Chauth" kyu nahi mnaate.. Tab mumy ne reply dia tha ki.. Karwa Chauth Jaisa Hi humaara 1 tyohaar hota hai "VAT SAWITRI".. jo May-june ke month me mnaya jata hai.. Isme Vat Vriksha Ki Pooja Ki jaati hai...

Dear friends,
Uttarakhand culture have great traditions for the years, we have almost one festival every month with start of a new month.  But in our present generation hardly any pahri can tell those all festival names.  But other hand leaving our great traditions and rich culture we are running behind the other culture accepting their traditions and customs.  It I feel shameful, we have to rethink about it, our traditions and customs should not become a fashion statement or influence of media hype.  I give you some examples:
1. Cake cutting and lighting off the candle, it is very wrong tradition we start every function or event with  lighting of lamp and in a birth day part we are doing just oppsite.  I feel it very objectionable, since we have also have our traditions of celebration of birthday with Kartkeya Puja and other rituals.
2. Karwa Chauth fast is very common nowadys due to the propeganda of medi but hardly any woman know about VAT SAVITRI AMAVASYA or HARITALI FAST.
3. Marriage celbrations are become now all punjabi show sha, Mehandi, Jai mala etc all are not in our tradition other hand we are not performing our customs in marriages.
4. We are leaving our old tradition of Jagaran, Jagar and Puja as it is orthodox and we are performing Mata ki Chowki and Mata ka jagrata which is totally commercialised.
I am not against any culture or traditions, but if we have some customs & traditions why should we leave them and accept others customs just because of media hype.
We have to learn from Punjabis that after show many set back they people remain their identity all over the world with their great traditions of Punjabis at the level that Punjabis become the symbol of Indian Culture.
I we want to identify ourselves as Uttarakhandi/Pahari we have to rethink over it and go to our roots and rediscover our great traditions, culture and customs.  I think there is nothing wrong in it and it is not against any other culture or people.

Himanshu ji,
That is what I want to say, we are living in a global world and should adopt the things from all parts of the world if we feel it is neccessary or benficial.  But leaving our traditions and following blindly others is not justified.
Like most of our youth dont believe in jagar aur pooja as it is orthodox or hippocracy but same they are wasting there time in gali ka Jagrata and collecting Chanda for that.  My only concern is that if we are adopting others tradition is ok but we should not leave ours.

Anubhav da, second reason hai easy availibility of Liquor, Even in the small town where there is no school, no postoffice, no hospital...you will easily find a Liquor shop (Deshi Sharab ki dukan).

What we needs today is to instill pride among our own people pride for their culture, language and their glorious homeland.
Language is the key to culture. Today the new generation hardly interacts in our local languages.

An Evenki poet Alitet Nemutshkin said

If I forget my native speech,
and the songs my people sing,
what use are my eyes and ears?
what use is my mouth..

How can i believe the foolish idea,
That my mother tongue is weak and poor,
If my mother's last words were in Evenki?

This is the sort of pride we need to instill in our people....
Only then can hope to save and conserve our culture...

Divijay Ji,

Thanks for sharing your views.

I am in agreement with your views. We have already opened a thread called "why do we hesitate in speaking our regional languages". This thread is in our Language Section and people have expressed their views on it.

in fact, this area really needs to give more attention. On our part, our team has started this process. Whenver we meet any fellow from UK, we try to interact with him / her in our languages.

Fortunately, we have got a very good response from the new generation in this regard.

What we needs today is to instill pride among our own people pride for their culture, language and their glorious homeland.
