Yet another news on construction of Dam.

===============================

Four small hydro projects coming up in Uttarakhand

Shishir Prashant / New Delhi/ Dehra Dun April 07, 2009, 0:53 IST

Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) is building four hydropower plants with an assistance of Rs 194 crore from the Asian Development Bank. These would together produce 29 Mw.

The projects are 4 Mw Kaliganga, 6 Mw Kaliganga-II, 10 Mw Madmaheshwar and 9 Mw Kaligaud in the hill state where 25,000 Mw of power potential has been identified by the state government so far.

Under an agreement with the ADB, UJVNL will get a total assistance of $300 million of which $45 million would be spent on the four projects, official sources here said.

The remaining amount would be used for strengthening the power transmission network in the state.

Uttarakhand would get the assistance under the special category status where 90 percent of the amount comes as a grant, the sources said.

Kaliganga and Madmaheshwar projects, being constructed on a tributary of Mandakini river in the Ukhimath area of Rudraprayag district, are expected to be completed by 2010. Kaliganga-II is being constructed at a nearby area and would be completed in two years.

Work on the Kaligaud project in Uttarkashi district is likely to begin by the end of this month and would be completed in 2 year. UJVNL currently produces 1,305.90 Mw with 21.05 Mw being generated from small hydro projects.

I appreciate that you have started a very good topic.

I am also agree with your views. But our State Government is also saying that we have to make our State "URJA PRADESH".

In Uttarakhand there is a huge source of Electricity thats why our Government is proposing to establish new hydro projects in Uttarakhand. Construction of DAM's is beneficial for us.

“DAM BEING CONSTRUCTED IN UTTARAKHAND ARE BONE OR CURSE”

Dosto,

The way construction work of Dam (Hydro Project) is in progress in entire hill areas of Uttarakhand, in coming days you would not able to recognize your native place. There are thousands of Dams are being constructed in each and every River of Uttarakhand.

As you are aware, Uttarakhand is already in a high earthquake Zone and recent past also, we have witnessed several tremor of earthquake claiming loss of men & material. We would surprise to see that not even a single river is spared in Uttarakhand where a big Dam is not being constructed. Thousands of villages are above the tunnels of these Dams.

Time to time, several intellectual and expert people have expressed their views anticipating the catastrophe due to high volume of construction of these Dam and  also they have informed the Govt accordingly. But it is the Govt which is only seeking the butter part of bread. Villagers have been opposing construction of these Dams daily at different part of UK but no gain. Unfortunately, Govt eye is on Revenue only and  not the eco-system and life of people there.

We invite your views in this debate that “Dam being constructed in Uttarakhand are Bone or Curse”. Here is the link :

Mehta ji,
We need dams but not necessarily behemoths like Tehri. We need inflatable dams (such dams are being constructed elsewhere in the world)-they can be erected on smaller 'gadheras' and power can be generated. Such projects will affect minimum number of people. Mind you large dams not only submerge large areas but their lakes cause lots of climatic changes as well. In nature many times rivers are dammed by landslides. In the past such slides dammed the rivers and lakes were formed. One such lake was at Tehri too! But it was formed much before we came in to being. That lake had stabilised and over a period of time it had 'broken' through the natural dam and left a wide fertile valley. It was the clay of that lake which was used in making Tehri dam.
Hydroelectric power is mainstay of financial resources for UK. Horticulture is there but it can not sustain the economy, forestry is already losing ground. Therefore we need smaller dams with Run Of the River schemes to generate power and sell it to power starved plains.

vIEWS FROM SUNIL
===========

Well Friends,

I believe, each development work has two sides.

Pros:
 * Builiding DAM will provide necessary infra in the state.
* Will generate new employment and the locals people will not have to move outside state for more greener pastures.
* More money means more development in  other Areas.
* More revenue to the Govt. will make Uttrakhand more self reliance and the state will not have to look Central govt. for funds for other development projects.

Cons:

* The people who got effected will definitely be at the receiving end and any money or materilaistic thing will not heal there love to their Land and houses where they were living for generations. This issue needs to be takled very carefully and the setllement of the people must be taken care with utmost prority.

* Yes u are right the the region is earthquake prone and may be we may face a big catastrope if ............. The design and work on DAM must be taken up with these things in mind and I firmly believe that this would have been taken up by the Govt..

* Any new devlopment work always effects the environment. So while working in such projects, care must be taken to minismise this effects so that the flora and funa of the region does not gets effected.

The said cons must be highlighted at the right forums so that Govt. do not overlook them and work to minismise the effects.

Regards

Sunil

Uttarakhand buys power at higher rates
« Reply #55 on: April 20, 2009, 10:36:58 AM »
This is the real picture of power situations in our "OORJA PRADESH"...

Uttarakhand is facing acute electricity crisis with the state-run power corporation finding it tough to buy it from other states even at higher rates.

Uttarakhand’s power blues were compounded after most of the states, with which it had entered into a banking arrangement, refused return power due to general elections.

Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) is under pressure from chief minister B C Khanduri not to go for electricity rostering and load shedding during the election time.

This has forced UPCL to buy power at exorbitant rates. The corporation is holding talks with various power companies in Gujarat, Delhi and Haryana and is also making efforts to overdraw from the northern grid. “There is tremendous pressure on us,” admitted a UPCL official.

Gujarat has agreed to provide 3.2 million units of electricity at Rs 12 per unit, UPCL sources said. On the other hand, the corporation is trying hard to buy electricity from Delhi, Harayana and other states.

Uttarakhand currently needs 23 million units of power and is facing a shortage of at least 6 million units. UPCL is already overdrawing from the northern grid even after getting the state’s share from the central pool. The demand in Uttarakhand this season is 2.2 million units more than the previous year due to rapid industrialisation in the state.

Electricity generation in Uttarakhand, which produces 12-13 million units of power during summer, has come down to nearly half due to receding water levels in various rivers.

When contacted UPCL officials admitted that the crisis was severe but said the situation was likely to improve in the next fortnight when the water levels in the rivers would improve due to melting of snow.

Officials of the Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited also said they were expecting 6 million unit more power during the summer when all the hydel projects run at full capacity.

UPCL has also pinned its hopes on the Kalagarh power plant, which is expected to regenerate 1.4 million units of power.

This is a quite shocking news. If there is acute shortage of electricity for Uttarakhand citizien like this, what is the use of making so many Dams when we have hundreds of DAMs and asia's biggest DAM like Tehri in the state and still there electricity crisies.

Can we say Uttarakhand "Power State (Urja Pradesh) under such condition ?

NO GAIN WITHOUT PAIN

This is true..

Secondly, there is cirisis of electricty in uttarakhand. Govt has also named Uttarkahand State as "Bijali Bhoomi" but it nowhere seems to be Bijali Bhoomi.
