उत्तराखंड में पंद्रह रुपये लीटर तक बिकेगा गो मूत्रOct 20, 03:26 am

Hero Honda launches the 150cc Hunk Premium bikes

Hero Honda launches the 150cc Hunk Premium bikes
19 October 2007

New Delhi: Hero Honda clearly believes that premium bikes are where the money, and the action, is and has launched a new product in the category, the 150cc Hunk.
According to Anil Dua, vice president for sales and marketing, premium-segment bikes still account for a relatively small 14 per cent of the overall motorcycles market, but the company believes that there is potential for the market to expand in this segment.

The kick-start model of the Hunk has been priced at Rs55,000, and the self-start version at Rs57,000. This is Hero Honda's fourth bike in the premium segment, following the CBZ Extreme, Karizma, and Achiever.

Dua says the company has doubled its market share and its volumes in the premium segment over the last one year.

According to Pawan Munjal, managing director, Hero Honda, the company will retain its focus on the 100cc segment, which comprises about two-third's of the overall bike market. Hero Honda is looking at servicing the progression of the customers to upgrade to higher models through its focus on the premium segment.

Hero Honda has deferred plans to commence production at its new plant in Uttarakhand, which will now start production in April 2008 on account of the current slump in the motorcycle market in India. Production was originally scheduled to commence at the plant in August 2007.

Rashtriya Sahara launches Dehradun edition

Rashtriya Sahara launches Dehradun edition
Dehradun | Friday, Oct 19 2007 IST

The Sahara India Group launched the sixth publication of its Hindi Daily Rashtriya Sahara here today.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri inaugurated the first issue of the Dehradun edition in the presence of Rashtriya Sahara Media Head, Sumit Roy.

''The power of media was known all over the world but it has both been used and misused,'' Maj-Gen (retd) Khanduri said.

He stressed that the media ought to maintain its credibility by emphasising more on positive reporting so that the society benefits from it. The Chief Minister added that nowadays more space was given to the sensational news rather than human interest stories. ''This negative and melancholic approach should change,'' he emphasised. Maj-Gen Khanduri hoped that the Rashtriya Sahara's Dehradun edition would prove to be the true mirror of the society, focusing on local issues of Uttarakhand.

''I want the paper not only to praise the Government but also to project its shortcomings so that we learn from it,'' he exhorted.

Rashtriya Sahara Media Head Sumit Roy said it was a challenge to launch a paper in place where literacy rate is high. He added ''We would do justice to the peoples expectation by providing good journalism''. He maintained that now the media want to serve more in less time and in this changing situation the challenges have doubled.

However, he said '' our aim is focussed on creating and developing the conscious of the people through good and positive journalism. We do not intend to create noise but to tell the readers only facts.'' Earlier Group Editor Ranvijay Singh read out the message from the Head of Sahara Group, Subroto Roy. Mr Roy said the Sahara publications were more committed in carrying out the social and moral responsibilites. Describing Uttarakhand as the state which has produced more intellectuals, freedom fighters he hoped that jorunalists here would practice courageous, unbiased and transparent journalism.

The Dehradun edition of Rashtriya Sahara Hindi Daily is the sixth in series after Delhi, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Patna

7 years old, hill state gears up for more ‘power’

Completing seven years as a state next month, Uttarakhand is ready to take its first big step towards becoming a ‘Power State’. The proposed commissioning of 304-MW Maneri Bhali-Phase-II project on Bhagirathi river in Uttarkashi district would help Uttarakhand fulfil its growing power needs.

At the time of its formation as a separate state in 2000, Uttarakhand was billed as a ‘Power State’ due to its immense potential of tapping hydro-electric power. With two of the major rivers of the Indo-Gangetic plains — Ganga and Yamuna — flowing from the Uttarakhand hills, and numerous other small rivers and rivulets flowing within the state boundaries, the total hydro-electric power capacity of the region was estimated at 20,000 MW.

However, in 2000, the existing powerhouses of the state had a maximum capacity of not more than 1,200 MW. Even the old Maneri Bhali hydro-electric project had a capacity of only 90 MW. As a first, the state Government took up the Maneri-Bhali-phase-II project, which had been pending for nearly two decades due to want of funds in Uttar Pradesh. The project undertaken by the Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam, a Government undertaking, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore, was started in 2002, with a 2005 deadline. However, delays led to cost escalation by nearly Rs 800 crore.

Now, the project is almost complete and the officials are planning to fill the reservoir to start trial runs. The officials are confident to commission the project on November 9, 2007, on the seventh birth anniversary of the state.

Maneri Bhali-phase-II would be the first major hydro-electric project, fully owned by the state Government, to start production. Earlier, 1000-MW Tehri project, 400-MW Vishnu Prayag and 280-MW Dhauliganga project in Kumaon region, owned by public and private sector companies, also became operational. However, the state Government gets a royalty of only 12 per cent power from these projects. Out of a total 20,000-MW of hydro-electric power potential identified, the state has already allocated works for 45 projects with a capacity of 12,348 MW.

Several public sector corporations have been given projects having a total generation capacity of 4,310 MW. Private companies have also been given projects having a generation capacity of 2,016 MW. Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam would work on 12 projects with an installed capacity of 2,197 MW. Apart from its own projects, Uttarakhand would also get a royalty of 12 per cent from rest of the projects and hopes to have a total power of 3,678 MW after the completion of all these 45 projects by the year 2016.

ACL has already commissioned a one million tonne grinding unit in Uttarakhand

Ambuja net rises 11%

BS Reporter / Mumbai October 20, 2007

Ambuja Cements Ltd (ACL), the country’s third largest cement maker, said on Friday that net profit rose 11.72 per cent to Rs 292.44 crore in the quarter ended 30 September, 2007, against Rs 261.76 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Net sales during the quarter grew 14.93 per cent to Rs 1,299.93 crore as compared with Rs 1,131.03 crore in the previous corresponding period.

Higher sales, better prices on buoyant demand helped the company post good quarterly numbers. Operating profit for the September quarter stood at Rs 393.15 crore against Rs 381.42 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Operating costs during the period were impacted by higher raw material consumption. Operations at the Ambujanagar unit in Gujarat were disrupted in August-September by severe flooding.

The company said it expected cement demand to be buoyant with the construction industry continuing to be one of the major drivers of economic growth.

“Consequently, residential as well as infrastructure projects would register rapid growth and cement demand, therefore, is likely to remain buoyant,” the company said.

In the quarter under review, ACL sold 3.82 million tonnes of cement against 3.61 million tonnes during the same period last year.

Similarly, production increased by 5.85 per cent to 3.8 million tonnes in the period against 3.59 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year.

ACL, in which the world’s second largest cement maker Holcim owns 36 per cent, is increasing its manufacturing capacity to 22 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) within two years from the current 16 mtpa.

On Thursday, Holcim deferred a plan to buy an additional 20 per cent in ACL from public shareholders without giving any reason.

ACL has already commissioned a one million tonne grinding unit in Uttarakhand. It also upgraded clinker capacity at its Rajasthan plant from 1.6 mtpa to 2 mtpa. Other clinkerisation projects amounting to 4 mtpa are on schedule. The company also plans to build a new 1.5-million-tonne grinding unit in Gujarat.

ACL shares closed at Rs 139.60 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Friday, down 3.86 per cent from its previous close.

Electrolux in premium league New Plant in Uttarakhand
New Delhi, Oct. 22: Electrolux, the home appliances division of Videocon Industries, is looking at strengthening its presence in the premium segment.

The company plans to manufacture high-end refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, and air conditioners at its new plant in Uttarakhand. The facility at Uttarakhand, set up at an investment of Rs 200 crore, will be operational by January next year.

Electrolux has two manufacturing units at Shahjanpur in Rajasthan and at Varora near Nagpur. The units manufacture small and medium-sized refrigerators. The high-end models are imported from China and Thailand.

“In the past, we were present in the premium segment. But our maximum sales came from low and mid-segment products. Now our focus is to establish a stronger presence in the premium category as well,” said Anirudh Dhoot, CEO of Electrolux.

Dhoot said the Uttarakhand unit would also enable the company to cater to the overseas market. “Once production starts at the new plant, we intend to export to Saarc nations and West Asia, besides serving the domestic market,” Dhoot said.

The company will also introduce front-loading washing machines and a separate range of driers for its washer category. “We are working on the washer category and will launch new products by January-end next year,” said Madhav Nene, general manager (marketing) of Electrolux.

The company today launched a range of refrigerators priced between Rs 29,000 and Rs 2.4 lakh. Electrolux is betting big on the festival season. “This year we expect the total revenue to increase to Rs 600 crore from Rs 500 crore last year,” Nene said. The company is eyeing a 10 per cent increase in sales at Rs 150 crore

Greenply to acquire plywood firms, plans new units in Uttarakhand

Greenply to acquire plywood firms, plans new units
MUMBAI: Plywood and laminate maker Greenply Industries Ltd will acquire two plywood firms in Gujarat and set up new units as it pushes to boost capacity in a strongly growing market, a senior official said on Tuesday.

The company will spend Rs 200 million to acquire stakes in Rajkot-based Galaxy Decor and Platinum Veneers and invest for new equipment and working capital for these units. The acquisitions will be funded from internal accruals and debt.

It will also set up a laminate unit in Himachal Pradesh and a medium-density-fibre plywood line at its plant in Uttarakhand, but is still to finalise the details.

"We needed to maintain our capacity. We are already at 90 per cent capacity utilisation for plywood, and 96 per cent for laminates, despite recent expansions," Ashok Sharma, vice president for finance, told media over telephone.

Greenply, which controls a quarter of the country's organised plywood market and a sixth of the laminate market, will booost its plywood capacity to 21 million square metres after the acquisitions, from 18 million now.

Sharma said the plywood and related materials market is growing at nearly 15 percent per annum, with Greenply registering an annual growth of 30 percent, driven by a jump in the housing and commercial real-estate segments. The company will enjoy excise and tax exemptions at both Uttarakhand and Himachal units, Sharma said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Greenply reported a sharp jump in July-September net profit to Rs 111.9 million, on net sales of 1.36 billion rupees. Sharma attributed the rise to added capacities and forex gains.

"New capacity has been added for plywood and laminates in the past year, which has boosted revenue. We also had forex gain of 23 million rupees due to a strengthening rupee," he said.

The company imports timber logs, base paper, ply and veneers, which form the raw material for its products, and has therefore benefitted from a rising rupee during the quarter. The company expects carbon credit revenue to accrue from one of its existing units in the current quarter, Sharma said.

Greenply shares, which extended gains to a new high of Rs 272.30 on news of the strong earnings, were trading at 253.50 rupees, up 1.6 per cent in a strong Mumbai market.
