TATA Motors is expanding capacity of its Pantnagar facilty in Uttarakhand. The company is planning to manufacture additional 4,000 trucks a month to accommodate a new product on the Ace platform, christened "Penguin".

Penguin is likely to be launched by the end of second quarter of this fiscal. It will be even smaller then Ace, with a payload capacity of around 0.5 tonne.

The capacity of the line in Pantnagar is likely to be ramped up to 1,000 vehicles a day from the present 600-700. This includes nearly 200 to 300 Nano's, which are being made at the same plant as well.

At present, TATA manufactures light truck Ace, along with two multi purpose vehicles Magic and Winger based on the same platform at its Pantnagar facility.

The state of the art SKF technology will be operational by January 2010. The company will be investing Rs1500mn in this project and plans to employ more than 200 people.

This plant will specifically cater to the automotive market segment in India. Situated over an area of 10 acres, the new bearing factory will have a production capacity of 40 million bearings. Deep Groove Ball Bearings will be manufactured at this site to cater to the demands of the automotive and manufacturing sector.

New Delhi, May 7 (IANS) For two years, Ratnesh Gupta, a software engineer with IT major Birla Soft, has been trying to fulfil his dream of buying a house of his own, either in the national capital or in Chandigarh. But his budget of Rs.2.5 million (Rs.25 lakh) was making it beyond reach.

Now, he has finally zeroed in on his dream house, though he has settled for Rudrapur, a small town in Uttarakhand. In the process, he has joined thousands of house hunters who are buying properties in smaller cities, fuelling a housing boom in them.

Rudrapur is among a host of towns like Almora, Bhiwadi, Neemrana, Haldwani, Meerut, Moradabad and Karnal that have started attracting new home buyers, bringing a lot of cheer to the realty industry that is otherwise facing one of its worst crises in decades.

“My budget was very small to buy a house in Delhi or even Chandigarh, my native place. Even a one bedroom apartment was not available in a decent colony. Now, I will own a decent house and also manage to save some money for other investments,” Gupta said.

“In Rudrapur, a two bedroom apartment is costing me Rs.14.6 lakh (Rs.1.46 million). It is within reach. And I feel it is a very good investment proposition for future as the city is opening up for development,” he told IANS.

“The main reason for realty development at these places is that metros and even many big cities have become overheated and oversaturated,” said Anuj Puri, chairman and country head of global realty consultancy Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj.

“Property prices in larger cities have gone beyond the reach of the middle class. So people are looking at new destinations. Prices there are reasonable, where the pace of development is fast and it makes for good future investment,” Puri told IANS.

“Land at these smaller places is still available at reasonable rates. Industries are coming up. There is overall development. So real estate companies, so also investors, have very good future in these places.”

According to Jai Mawani, head of real estate with global auditing and consultancy major KPMG, smaller cities in India offer a huge potential, making them the most happening places for real estate development now and for the future.

“But there is no empirical basis yet to establish the actual market share of these towns in the overall realty sector as it is still unorganised,” Mawani said.

The Planning Commission, which estimates a shortage of 22.4 million dwelling units in the country, says some 80-90 million new units will need to be created over the next 10 years to adress the demand, a majority for middle and lower middle income groups.

Interestingly, rather than the big players, the smaller developers are the ones that are benefiting from the realty boom in smaller cities and towns, which have shown no sign of being affected by a slowdown that has otherwise gripped the country’s realty industry.

“The slowdown, in fact, is helping us. The big developers are staying away from these cities. They are selling land to smaller players so that they can raise cash for bigger projects in large cities,” said Mahim Mittal, managing director, Shivkala Developers.

Take Rudrapur. The town has good connectivity, with Pant Nagar Airport just 11 km away. Delhi is 254 km away, the famous Jim Corbett tiger reserve is 95 km away and a drive of 60 km takes you to the popular hill station of Nainital.

Developers say that in the past two years, more than 100 plots in Rudrapur have been sold to employees by companies like Tata Motors, Bajaj, Escorts, Voltas, Britannia, HCL, Nestle, Parle, Dabur, Hewlett-Packard and Kores India.

“Nearly $2 billion investment has gone into the real estate business in Rudrapur,” said Mittal, adding this would go up once the overall realty market in the country stages a recovery.

Tata Motors' first consignment of Nano sent to Hyderabad

HALDWANI (Uttarakhand): Tata Motors' Pantnagar facility sent its first consignment of Nano, world's cheapest car, to Hyderabad.

A total of 50 Nano cars were sent to Sanatnagar railway station of Hyderabad from Haldi Road station near Pantnagar through high-capacity BPU coaches yesterday, railway sources said.

Along with 50 Nano cars, 34 Tata magic vans were also sent.

Railway sources said Izatnagar division of railways has earned a revenue of Rs 8,71,145 from the loading of first consignment of Nano.

Tata Motors had demanded specially designed coaches, known as NMG coaches in railway parlance, from the railway board for smooth transport of Nano but instead they provided them high-capacity BPU coaches in which the small cars were loaded.

Although the mother plant of Nano has been set up in Sanand of Gujarat, Nano is currently being manufactured in Pantnagar facility, where it is also producing Ace trucks.

HYDERABAD: Heavy vehicle major Ashok Leyland on Thursday launched its new multi-axle vehicle, 3116 MAV [developed for high fuel efficiency], and announced that its Rs. 1,300-crore greenfield plant in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, was all set to be commissioned before April 2010.

At a press conference to announce the launch of the 3116 (8 X 2) MAV, Director and Chief Operating Officer Vinod K. Dasari said the company’s Pantnagar plant, the most automated, would focus on the medium and heavy vehicle platforms.

He said the company would roll-out its light commercial vehicle range by 2011 under a joint venture with Nissan. The year would also witness the company’s construction equipment vehicles project with John Deer, he said.

Hinduja Group's flagship company Ashok Leyland's Rs 1,300-crore Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) plant is likely go on stream within the next few months.

The plant would have an installed capacity of 50,000 units of commercial vehicles annually.

Besides, the company is also planning to increase the capacity at its Alwar plant by 50 per cent this fiscal.

"Work on the Pantnagar plant is progressing well and we hope to inaugurate it within a few months. The plant would have an annual installed capacity of 50,000 units," Ashok Leyland Executive Director (Marketing) Rajiv Saharia told reporters here.

He, however, did not specify a time-frame for the inauguration of the plant.

Surya Roshini to set up Rs 100-cr plant in MP
Surya Roshni Ltd, a leader in the lighting and steel pipes business in India, is going for a major expansion programme by setting up a new manufacturing plant at Malenpur in Madhya Pradesh with an investment of Rs 100 crore.

Arvind Bansal, Deputy Managing Director of the company said, it had bought a 48-acre plot at Malenpur for building the new facility to produce bulbs, tubes and CFLs. “This is going to be largest galvanised plant in India,” Bansal said. This facility, which will be second in Malenpur, will have high mast and octagonal pole for outdoor application.

He said that the Kashipur facility was being expanded by setting up 4 new chains of CFL with a total capacity of producing 20 lakh CFL bulbs.The company with a turnover of Rs 1,750 crores is investing Rs 550 crores in the next three years to become a Rs 5,000-crore group.

The company is also exporting to 45 countries across the globe including the US and Europe. The company has two state-of-the-art plants one each at Kashipur in Uttarakhand and Malanpur in Madhya Pradesh where the entire range of light sources and HID is produced.

The group was also expanding to give 6,000 new jobs in one year, Bansal added.

On its upcoming Bhuj plant, Bansal said the company had already started trial production but actual production would start only in January next year. The company has invested Rs 400 crore in the Bhuj plant to produce spiral pipes for the oil and gas sector.

Bajaj-Renault combine may be gearing up to take on Tata Motor's Nano in the ultra-small car segment.

But in Uttarakhand , the speculation is rife that Bajaj-Renault is trying to explore the possibility of the small car establishment at various places including the industrial hub of Pantnagar. And it may not be very far away from where Tata Motors is currently producing Nano.

Losses to industries caused by heavy floods may be enormous in some pockets of Uttarakhand. Industrial establishments in such areas as Laksar, Langaroad and Bhagwanpur have reported heavy losses, where companies like Birla Tyre, Everest and Hunung Toys bore the brunt of torrential rains that triggered floods during the past one week.
Meanwhile, losses in other industrial areas are not as huge as anticipated earlier. According to an assessment done by the Department of Industries, the loss to the affected companies could be Rs 300-400 crore. “We are still evaluating, but preliminary reports suggest the losses are heavy,” said Sudhir Nautiyal, additional director, Department of Industries.

Birla Tyre, a unit of Kesoram industries, which set up its new facility at Khedi Mubarakpur in Laksar area of Haridwar district with an investment of Rs 2,300 crores, reported heavy losses. Raw materials stored in the factories were damaged. The situation aggravated in Luxor when the flooded Sonali river, a tributary of Ganga, breached its embankment inundating the factories.

Everest in Bhagwanpur industrial area of Haridwar district reported heavy losses, too. Langaroad industrial area in Dehra Dun district was submerged for two-three days causing heavy losses.
Nautiyal said water-logging in Pantnagar industrial area has also done harm to industries. The industries are unable to send their dispatches, due to heavy floods on the Moradabad-Delhi highway.
In most places, including Haridwar, Dehra Dun and Pantnagar, train services remained disrupted for over three days. However, it was being partially restored in Haridwar, added Nautiyal.
There are two types of losses caused to industries. The primary loss was due to flooding of roads and highways, which hampered industrial production as inventories piled up and raw materials could not be procured, mainly in Pantnagar. Also, loss was incurred due to water-logging inside factory premises, which damaged machineries and raw material. “The situation is improving gradually during the past two days,” added Nautiyal.
