Extension to Dikshit panel upsets UKD

THE B.C. Khanduri government's decision to grant another six-month extension to the Justice Birendra Dikshit Commission to chose Uttarakhand's permanent capital has irked coalition partner Uttarakhand Kranti Dal.
Ending weeks of speculation, the state government passed an order on Thursday allowing the commission time till April next year to submit its third and final feasibility report on selecting a permanent capital for the new state. The present move is the ninth extension granted to the one-man commission, which was first set up in January 2000 by the interim BJP government with the aim of finding a suitable capital for the state.
"The Dikshit Commission has failed to submit its report despite taking up so much time. Another extension would mean nothing but wastage of public money," said senior UKD leader Kashi Singh Airy. Desisting from targeting the government, several UKD leaders are also saying that another extension granted to the commission is totally against the wishes of the public and the party would oppose the move.
Ever since coming into existence, the Dikshit Commission is studying four places -Gairsain, IDPL-Rishikesh, Kashipur-Ramnagar and Dehradun with the possibility of building Uttarakhand's permanent Capital. Although the commission has submitted two feasibility reports to the government, the final report would be submitted after it gets a report from Delhi-based School of Planning and Architecture, which is still waiting for satellite images of the four places from Remote Sensing Agency, Hyderabad.
According to reports, SPA has received 19 of the total 24 images from the Hyderabad agency. It is expected to submit its report to the commission in another two months. The final report is likely to be submitted
