12 killed as bus falls in Uttarakhand
DEHRADUN: At least 12 people, including two elderly women and an 8-year-old girl, were killed and 23 others injured on Friday morning after a private bus carrying 35 people to Srinagar town in Pauri district skidded of the road and fell into a 300m deep ravine near Daggar police post in Kirtinagar tehsil.
Seven people, including the 8-year-old girl Sanjana and the driver Leela Singh Chauhan, 32, died on the spot while 5 others succumbed to their injuries in Srinagar hospital.
A senior medical officer in Srinagar hospital said that the possibility of the toll rising cannot be ruled out considering the condition of some of the injured.
Tehri SP Janmejay Khanduri said that the accident occurred at 9.15am when the speeding bus driver was trying to negotiate a sharp bend at Daggar police post, 20km from Kirtinagar town.
Khanduri said that a team from Uttarakhand Disaster Management Department helped in rescue operations.
Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, who was in Mussoorie, asked Tehri DM and other administrative officers in Dehradun to release an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed, Rs 50, 000 to those seriously-injured and Rs 25, 000 to the injured.
