‘Creative Uttarakhand' focuses on impact of globalisation

Seminar held on U’khand

By Dr Shailesh Upreti

Dehradun, 17 Feb: "Uttarakhand and Globalisation: Challenges for Sustainable Development" was the topic of a seminar "Hamari Virasat" held, recently, at the Press Club of India, New Delhi. The annual magazine of CUMP (Creative Uttarakhand Myor Pahar) was also released on the occasion.

A gathering of around 50 people heard the eminent speakers on the occasion. The purpose of the seminar was to increase awareness and to understand the impact of globalisation on the society, culture and economy of Uttarakhand.

Rajendra Dhasmana, human rights activist and former Editor of Doordarshan, emphasised that people’s participation could play a crucial role in the development of the state. He also spoke on the need for organisations and people who could raise the voice of the masses against the ‘dictatorship’ of government mafia, police and bureaucracy. He also criticised the Uttarakhand government for harassing people in the name of Maoism in the state.

He drew attention to the ‘chimera’ of development and gave the example of the Tehri Dam. Before completion of the dam, it was state that 2500 MW electricity would be generated but, in reality, the scenario was entirely different. Only one turbine was functional and a number of unexpected complications had arisen. Similarly, the rehabilitation problem was still persisting. He lamented that everything was done without taking the local people into confidence. He appreciated the efforts of CUMP and its magazine stating, "The magazine is a truly serious effort having as it does articles on the social, cultural, economic, political and historical importance of Bageshwar since the era of ‘Kuli Begar aandolan’ to ‘Uttarakhand andolan’, Gandhiji’s visit of Bageshwar, to the memoir of Rahul Sanskrityayan and Sarla Bahan, Bageshwar Mahatamya to the folklore and folk tales of the place."

Professor Shekhar Pathak noted the effect of globalisation on ‘Jal, Jungle and Zameen’ in Uttarakhand. Dr Pathak explained how migration was adversely affecting the culture, society, and development of Uttarakhand. He said that Uttarakhand had the highest level of migration in India, with the largest percentage of people in metros and other cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Chandigarh and other places. He also said that Uttarakhand had a unique geographic, social and political scenario, requiring different policies that could lead to sustainable development. He also was unhappy with the manner of functioning of the Uttarakhand government, asserting that it was not doing proper homework before implementating its policies.

Among the other speakers was Gyanendra Pandey, senior journalist and Editor of Doordarshan Lok Sabha channel, who quoted the Jagjit Singh Ghazal, "Baat nikli hai to bahut door tak jayegi".

Dev Singh Rawat, Editor of ‘Pyara Uttarakhand’ highlighted the loot of the forest, exploitation of resources and influence of the mafia on the establishment in the state. He appealed for efforts to be made to save the Himalaya and Uttarakhand.

KK Pandey, the former director of BIAS (Birla Institute of Applied Science), shared his ideas and suggested an initiative for launching a mobile hospital and training programmes for self-employment.

Ashutosh Karnatak, GM of GAIL, emphasised on adopting a positive approach to bring about healthier and sustainable development. The meeting was also addressed by Dataram Chamoli, Chandan Dangi, Prem Sundariyal, Devendra Upadhayay, Dayal Pandey, Hem Pant, Shekhar Sharma, Anubhav Upadhayay, Shailesh Tripathi, MP Mehta, Prem Shankar Joshi, Mohan Bisht and Kailash Pandey.

The function was conducted by the Editor of Sunday Post, Charu Tiwari. Charu Tiwari also edited the magazine, Hamarii Virasat, published by CUMP.

The meeting concluded with the promise to work for the Uttarakhand community with distinctive, creative and concrete ideas and initiatives. Activities of CUMP can be seen at www.creativeuttarakhand.com
