Boston (USA), 20 July: Despite recent divisions that left the North American Uttarakhandi Community in the lurch, the Uttarakhand Association of North America (UANA) held its annual convention in grand style, here, this Saturday. Highlights included a theatrical rendition of the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra and discussions on the state of Uttarakhand as well as UANA, itself.
The seminar programme in the afternoon was held at Harvard University and the evening cultural programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Manuj Pathak from the host organisation, Association for India's Development, gave a presentation on AID SAATHI Malika Virdi's work on women's empowerment in Munsiyari region,. Rajiv Rawat, a stalwart of the seminar series, gave presentations on, both, the Mountain Shepherds Initiative and his PhD dissertation topic. For the second presentation, he decided to take a highly critical look at the state, veering sharply away from the usual boosterism, to critique the new state's policies and politics that he had heard repeatedly in his travels through Uttarakhand over the last two years. These issues were further highlighted by Dr SR Hiremath, who spoke on Dr GD Agrawal's recent fast on behalf of the Bhagirathi.
The evening programme was yet another illustrious affair with the New England chapter leading the way with an array of songs and dance numbers. While the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra was by far the most elaborate production, enormous efforts were made by the youth, encouraged in their work by Pushp Kumar, former vice-president and coordinator of the organising committee. In the foyer, the works of Mohini Rawat, a California-based artist, were on display.
Despite Chief Minister Khanduri's last minute cancellation due to family illness, other dignitaries from India including Uttarakhand's youngest MLA Pushpesh Tripathi, and Dhirender Pratap, former spokesperson for Janata Dal and Congress, made the trip to Boston. Other special guests included Parashar Gaur, the Garhwali filmmaker from Toronto, and community elders Dr Prabhu Negi, the original founder of UANA, Dr Ramesh Pandey, and Dr Basant Tariyal.
At the general body meeting, the divisions of the recent past were noted with a call to learn from past mistakes and move on with the association despite the sad break. A strong plea to repair relations with the Canadian groups was also issued. It should be noted that UANA had not functioned as a North American association for many years due to unresolved differences between the two groups. With UANA's recent troubles, hope was held out that the breach could finally be repaired.
Next Saturday, both the Uttarakhand Cultural Association of Canada and Bhandari faction of the Uttaranchal Association of North America will be hosting their summer programs in Mississauga and Poughkeepsie respectively. The Canadian group will further host Narendra Singh Negi in Toronto on August 2nd. UANA has called for its members to join Canada in felicitating Negi.
