Hi everyone,

This is to inform you about the sad demise of Padmshri Harish Chandra Singh Rawat (HCS Rawat). Grandson of the legendary Pt Nain Singh Rawat, Sh Rawat was an acclaimed mountaineer and environmentalist. He also involved himself with social activities through his NGO - HOPE (Himalayan Organization for People and Environment). He served the Indian government in various capacities and was part of Indian embassies in Bhutan, Nepal and USA.

He scaled Hathi Parbat in 1963 and Mount Everest on May 29, 1965. He was awarded Arjuna Award in 1965 for mountaineering. He was also actively involved in clean up expeditions. In 1997, he was the technical adviser for a much needed clean up expedition on Kun peak.

Sh Rawat was also actively involved with the Indian Mountaineering Federation (IMF) and held key posts in the organisation. He also took out time to deliver talks about mountains and mountain peoples and also sensitize people about the realities of our mountains and nature.

He was also an avid photographer and had a good collection of pictures of various peaks, glaciers, people and Tibet. Infact the much visible picture of Capt Ahluwalia and Mr Phu Dorje on the summit on May 29, 1965 was clicked by him. This picture was also used by the Indian post in the stamp released on August 15, 1965 to commemorate the scaling of Mt Everest by the Indian expedition.

Sh Rawat spent the later years of his life in Delhi and Kausani. He is survived by his wife and three sons. He lived a fulfilling and happy life which many of us just dream about. May his spirit live forever!

regards
navin pangti

Rawat was a humble soul, dedicated to mountaineering: Kohli
Nagpur | Sunday, Jan 20 2008 IST

Indian Mountaineering Federation (IMF) vice president Padmashree Harish Chandra Singh Rawat, a member of the first successful Indian expedition to the Mount Everest in 1965 who died in New Delhi today, was a humble and unassuming soul who remained dedicated to mountaineering till the very end, said former Indian Navy Capt M S Kohli, the leader of the team.

Speaking to UNI over telephone, Capt Kohli said Rawat was so dedicated to mountaineering that he wanted to attend a recent meeting of the IMF in spite of his ailment.

''However, doctors did not allow him to leave hospital,'' he said.

The eminent mountaineer had also been working on social welfare projects in Uttarakhand, Capt Kohli added. ''Mr Rawat had been suffering from lung cancer and was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, and passed away today. He was 74,'' he said. ''Mr Rawat was among the 16 climbers who had participated in the 1965 expedition to Mt Everest. The expedition put nine Indians on the peak, setting a world record. It was a turning point in the history of Indian mountaineering. It established the country as a force to reckon with in mountaineering,'' Capt Kohli, who was with the Into-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at the time, said, adding that seven members of the mission have passed away earlier.

Later, Mr Rawat participated in a joint operation by the Indian intelligence and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States (US) to the Nandadevi peak to explore Chinese nuclear possibilities, he said, adding that the mission lasted for four years.

''Earlier, in 1964, Mr Rawat was with me in an expedition to Nandadevi (East). He fell 3,500 feet in an avalanche, but survived,'' he added.

Rawat ji ke baare mein kuchh mahatvapoorn jaankaari ........

Harish hardly resembled a mountaineer. He was short, round, with a small paunch and a moon-like bespectacled face, recalls MS Kohli. For the Sherpas, he was known as the 'Japani Sahib'.

Harish was born into a family of mountaineers. Rawat’s grandfather, Rai Bahadur Kishan Singh, known as AK Pandit, and his grandfather’s cousin, Nain Singh were the Indian pioneers to survey the country. They were with the Survey of India. Rai Bahadur went to the Pamirs through Nepal and surveyed the area and later explored Tibet for four years before coming back home to Pittoragarh in Kumaon Himalayas. Rawat was fired by the spirit of his family’s quest and drew inspiration from their exploratory deeds.
