Why Aswal Community and Kandar Leaves are not allowed in Tadkeshwar Dham

(Folk Tales /Community from Garhwal Series-117)
                                           Collected by Bhishma Kukreti
Due to strict custom, Aswal community, Kandar Leaves ( Shorea rubusta) and mustard oil are not allowed into Tadkeshwar Temple Premise. Tadkeshwar Temple is situated in Badalapur Patti, Pauri Garhwal.
There are many versions for the reasoning of disallowing Aswal community, Kandar Leaves into Tadkeshwar Temple primes.
Dr Shiva Nand Nautiyal offers following folk story about non allowing of Aswal Community, and Kandar into temple.
An Aswal Thakur was plowing field. It was after noon time and Bolanda (Caller) Tadkeshwar deity called Aswal Thakur to free bulls from plowing. Plowing bulls after noon is called cruelty. Aswal Thakur did not accept the cautious calling of Bolanda Tadkeshwar Deity. Tadkeshwar Mahadev took the form of a farmer and went before Aswal Than kur and requedted him to free bulls from plow. Instead of freeing bulls from plow, Aswal Thakur ran after the farmer to beat him. Tadkeshwar in Farmer form slipped due to Kandar leaves. Tadkeshwar Mahadev became angry on Aswal and Kandar Leaves. Tadkeshwar Mahadev cursed that from that day   neither Aswal person nor Kandar leave to be allowed in his temple at Tadkeshwar.
There is a Saying –
‘Aswal ki Jat ar Kandar ko Pat , Yakh ni Chaindi , yonki Jat ‘
The above saying  means that in this temple, neither Aswal community nor Kandar leave are required.

Mustard Oil is not permitted in Tadkeshwar /Tadashar Temple Premise

(Folk Tales /Community from Garhwal Series-118)
                                           Collected by Bhishma Kukreti
It is true that till date Aswal Community, , Kandar /Sal Leaves ( Shorea rubusta) and mustard oil are not allowed entry into Tadkeshwar, Tadkeshwar/Tadashar Temple of Badalpur. There are four five sayings for explaining banning of mustard oil, Aswal community and Kandar /Sal Leaves ( Shorea rubusta) into Tadkeshwar temple.
Dr ranvir Singh Chauhan provides a folk story as under –
Once, by conspiracy, Aswal community wanted to capture Badalpur Rajjagadhi. One of traitors of Badalpur Rajjagadhi met Aswal community. However, Tadkeshwar was calling the deity of Badalpur Garh Chieftain. Tadkeshwar was ‘Bolanda Dibta’ for Badalpur region. Tadkeshwar Mahadev used to call people of Badalpur region at the time of distress or bad happenings. Aswal community thought of lessening the power of calling Tadkeshwar Mahadev. For lessening the power of calling, Aswal pasted Haluva, Mustard oil on Shivling of Tadkeshwar temple, and put Kandar /Sal leaves on Ling. However, Badalpur people came to know the tactics of Aswal community. From that day, Aswal community, Kandar, Sal leaves, and mustard oil are not allowed entry into Tadkeshwar Temple.

Hair Raising Folk Story from Kuntani- Khaman, Dabralsyun Garhwal
(Garhwali Folk Tales /Community from Garhwal Series-119)

                                           Collected by Bhishma Kukreti
(Story narrated by Mrs. Suma Devi Dabral Kukreti)
Kuntani and Khaman are two neighboring villages. Both the villages come under Dabralsyun Patti. However, in past, Khaman was under Malla Dhangu Patti. Most of the villages of Dabralsyun are dominated by Dabral barring Khaman which is dominated by Kukreti and a few families of Pant and Lakhera. The folk tales state that a Dabral of Dabar gifted Khaman to his daughter married to Kukreti of Gweel-Jaspur.
There is a territory called Jamarkholi in Kuntani village. Jamarkholi is at the boundary of Khaman and Kuntani villages.
It is said that in long past, Jamarkholi was the area of Khaman village.  A woman called Bhaddu was from Khaman and married to a Dabral of Kuntani. It is said that either she loved Jamarkholi very much or was unhappy with her Mayaka (parental village).
By all means, Mrs. Bhaddu Dabral wanted Jamarkholi as part of Kuntani village (her in law village). She asked Khaman people to grant Jamarkholi to Kuntani village. Khaman People refused to gift the economical land to Kuntani.
Mrs. Bhaddu Dabral was bent for Jamarkholi territory as part of her in-law's village. When Khaman people did not agree for gifting Jamarkholi to Kuntani she took a terrifying decision.
Bhaddu reached to high top of Jamarkholi and cut and beheaded her head with a heavy sickle (Thmali). While cutting her head, Bhaddu cursed that “Till the place from here my head reaches that area would be of Kuntani and if Khaman people try to plough they would not be successful in plowing the area”. Her cut head reached down at Sisai Dang (there is a water source too). Even after her death, Khaman people did not gift the land to Kuntani people.
However, when Khaman farmers started plough in the fields of Jamarkholi, snakes surrounded plough, yoke of plough and bulls legs. Khaman people understood the cursing of Bhaddu. Khaman people gifted Jamarkholi area to Kuntani people.
From that day, Jamarkholi area is under Kuntani village.

Rautelas of Sakmunda not having Kuldevta and Gramdevta
      (Folk Stories of Garhwal- 121)
(Narrated by Shri Geetesh Negi, Churain Ganv, Badalpur, Pauri Garhwal)
         Collected By: Bhishma Kukreti
Most of Garhwali villagers of a village have a Kuldevta and or Gramdevta, Kuldevi and or Kuldevi (Family Deity and or Village Deity, Family Goddess and or Village Goddess). However, Rautelas of Sakmunda (Near Jaharikhal) do not perform rituals for worshipping any Kuldevta or Gram Devta. There is a folk story about Rautelas of Sakmunda not having Kuldevta and Gramdevta.
A rich Rautela (Saukar Rautela) of Maindoli village (near Jaharikhal) had two wives one living in Maindoli and the other living in Sakmunda. The rich Rautela was enjoying his life with ease, happiness and a large family.
It is said that the geography of Garhwal hills and human luck change very fast. Family members of Saukar Rautela Rich started dying by epidemics. One time came that Rautela and his two wives were alive but all family members died by epidemics. Saukar Rautela performed Kuldevta and Gramdevta rituals for getting children from his both the wives. Both wives delivered sons in due time. Saukar Rautela was happy again. However, his both sons died by the epidemic.
Then, again Saukar performed rituals for Gramdevta and Kuldevta for getting blessings for children. However, the epidemic was more powerful and again his newly born children died due to the epidemic.
Saukar Rautela was now angry with the deities especially the Village deity and family deity. Saukar Rautela threw idols of all deities and goddesses from family and village temples and settled in Sakmunda for ever, Later on, Saukar Rautela got sons from his wife living in Sakmunda and all children lived their normal life.
From that time, Rautelas of Sakmunda village don’t perform rituals for Kuldevta and or Gramdevta, Kuldevi and or Gramdevi (Family Deity and or Village Deity, Family Goddess and or Village Goddess). However, Rautelas of Sakmunda performs normal rituals for deities.

Kukreti migrating to  Banchuri from Jaspur

          ( Folk Stories of Garhwal- 120 )
(Narrated by Shri Gopal Kukreti , Dhangal)

          By Bhishma Kukreti
Guru Prasad or Guru Pati Kukreti was the first person of Kukreti family tree who settled in Jaspur in thirteenth or fourteenth century in Malla Dhangu, Gangasalan (Pauri Garhwal, now Kotdwara district). Once, Kukretis were Jameendar of whole Malla Dhangu. Kukreti’s elder’s son’s successor in Gweel (a twin village of Jaspur) used to be Padhan or Thokdar of Malla Dhangu. Till 1960, Padhan used to collect revenue in Malla Dhangu for government from the area barring where Padhans were appointed.
In Udaypur Patti adjacent to Malla Dhangu, at the bank of Hinval river, there are two famous and old villages called today Rikhyad-Banchuri . In fact the real name was Rishi-addaa or staying place for Rishis). Sh was pronounced as Kh and by combining rishi+ adda became Rikhyad.  Banchuri was actually Baun Chauro  (baun=forest, Chauro = aromatic  tree)  meaning the forest where aromatic trees were found abundantly. (bau+ chauro= banchuri). It is believed that Once, Rikhyad and Banchuri were twin villages.
Long back in Jaspur an original village of Kukretis but after Bahugunas settled in Jaspur, there was a young boy named Rama Nand Kukreti.  Young and handsome Rama Nand Kukreti was expert of experts in cooking Kheer and other sweet food items as Arsha. Once, the Jameendar of Banchuri who was having large land came to visit Jaspur for his family works.  Jameendar of Banchuri was offered food cooked by young Rama Nand Kukreti. Jamendar ofBbanchuri was so impressed by Kheer taste that he offered father of Rama Nand Kukreti to take young boy to his village Banchuri. After much discussion and convincing arguments of Jameendar of Banchuri , the father of Rama Nand Kukreti agreed and Rama Nand Kukreti settled in Banchuri.   After the marriage of Rama Nand Kukreti, Rama Nand was offered land in separate place called Dhangal (meaning Dhangu wala) .
Rama Nand‘s one son migrated to Kheda in Udaypur Patti and other was there in Dhangal. Till date, the Kukretis of Dhangal have Pitrikudi in Jaspur.

-
      (Folk Stories of Garhwal- 122)
-
(Narrated by Shri Subhash Kukreti, village Payasu, Kafolsyun, Pauri Garhwal)
-
         Collected By: Bhishma Kukreti

There is a Nanda Devi Temple on top of Payasu village of Kafolsyun, Pauri Garhwal.  Payasu is the original village of Molasi caste in Garhwal. All Molasi migrated from Payasu.
It is said that there was no Devi temple in Payasu in old age. Now, there is Nanda Devi temple on Nanda Devi Dhar of Payasu.
There is a folk story for establishing Nanda Devi temple in Payasu village. There was no Devi temple in the village.
One night, an elder from Molasi family saw a dream. In dream, Nanda Devi was sad that Payasu people were not caring for her. The dreamer asked her about her and showed his reason that nobody knew about her being in the village. In dream, Nanda Devi detailed the elder man that she was on a stone in Agrora Gadan (Agrora is Bisht village). Nanda Devi asked the dreamer for establishing her temple on top of Payasu village.
Next morning, the old man told about his dream to his fellow men.
Molasis fellow went to Agrora Gadan and found that big stone as directed by Nanda Devi.
Molasi fellows tried to disestablish the big stone. They could not disestablish the stone. All Molasi fellows took the help of logs for disestablishing the stone. They took Nanda Devi big stone through logs on their shoulders and started taking her towards hill stop of Payasu. After some distance from Payasu towards the hill top, the Molasi fellows could not keep the big stone on their shoulders. Molasi fellows put down the stone. After taking rest , Molasi fellows started taking up the stone but were unsuccessful in disestablishing the stone.
When Molasi fellows could not shake the stone, they establish Nanda Devi temple there. Initially, Molasi covered the Nanda Devi stone by a small stone –mud shade. However, now, Molasis built a bigger temple there.
Molasis perform Nanda Devi rituals every Bhadon month for three days. In old age, Molasis sacrificed male buffalos and goats for Nanda Devi Pujan. However, now, Molasis stopped sacrificing the animals for Nand Devi ritual performances.
