Garhwali Folk Story about Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple (Udaipur Patti, Pauri Garhwal)

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -67

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

(Reference: Hema Uniyal, 2011, Kedarkhand, Taxshila Prakashan, New Delhi, India, page 92)

The Garhwali folk story behind Yamkeshwar Temple is amazing
Yamkeshwar is famous Shiva Temple of Gangasalan. Yamkeshwar is situated at the bank of Sateri or Satedi Gad (Satyabhama or Satyarudra Rivulet) and is surrounded by Shamsan or cremation field from three corners. The Yamkeshwar Shiva Temple comes under the area of Badoli village three kilometer away from Amoli village. On last Monday of Shravan, there is large fare in this temple. There is also fare on every Shiva Ratri. There are 97 villages those visit the temple regularly. Once, Yamkeshwar was famous centre for Tantrik Vidya.
Yamkeshwar has also importance in Shilpkar Liberation Movement in Garhwal where in 1931, a conference was held by Shilpkar to eradicate untouchability from the society.
The folk story behind Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple is that Great sage Maharishi Mrikand got son by worshipping lord Shiva. Mrikand named his son as Markandeya. However, Narad, by the study of astrology suggested that Markandeya would die by eleventh year. Mrikand became sad. Markandeya asked the remedies for getting longer life. Sage Mrikand suggested the remedy.
Markandeya went to Manikut hill Plato and started Tap of Maha Mrityunjaya Jap at the bank of Shatrudra or Sateri River. Markandeya made the image of Shiva by sand and started Jap under a fig (Peepal) tree. At the set day of death for Markandeya, Yamraj (the death God or God of Righteous acts) reached to take the life of Markandeya. Markandeya requested to Yamraj that since his Jap of Maha Mrityunjaya (a religious ritual for winning over death) is incomplete, Yamraj should wait. However, Yamraj threw Kalpash or death weapon on Markandeya. Markandeya caught the sand image of Lord Shiva by both hands. The sand image broke down and Maha Mrityunjaya Rudra emerged from the image. Watching appeared Lord Shiva, Yamraj ran towards Jamradi village (Today’s Yamkeshwar). Yamraj started doing Tap for lord Shiva (form Rudra) at Jamradi (Today’s Yamkeshwar).  Lord Rudra told to Yamraj that where there is Maha Mrityunjaya Jap (ritual) Yamraj should not enter there. Maha Mrityunjaya or Lord Shiva told to Yamraj that where he (Yamraj) was performing Tap a self born Ling image is there. Lord Shiva suggested Yamraj to perform Jap or prayer of that self born Ling. Lord Shiva told that this image would be famous by name of Yama.  Lord Shiva blessed that whoever performs the Yama Shiv Ling that person would get longer life.  Yamraj performed Jap of lord Shiva or Ishwar for a year there. Since, Yamraj performed Ishwar prayer or Jap there it is called Yamkeshwar

Malvan Rawat of Paino Patti were Migrated from Udaipur-Dhangu: A Folk Story for Global Managers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -67

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)
(Narrated by Gopal Singh Rawat, Malan Ganv, Paino Patti, Malla Salan, Pauri Garhwal)

Malwan Rawats of Paino (Malla Salan, Lansdowne Tehsil) are originally from Udaipur Dhangu or Gangasalan. The folk saying about Malwan Rawat migrating to Paino Patti is as under.
Malvan Rawat clan originally belonged Kharak group or those who had ample of buffalo herds. Malvan Rawat were rich in Udaipur- Dhangu as they had hundreds of buffalo herds. Once, there was drought and at the same time there was political unrest in Udaipur-Dhangu. It was difficult for getting fodders for buffalos in the region. Malvan families started taking their buffalos in search of fodders towards Bhabhar. First, they reached to Dadamandi or Matiyali region of Langur and Sheela Pattis for grazing their buffalo herds. There they had cordial relationship with Devrani Pundits of the region. Malvan Rawat families were happy for getting superior fodder than Udaipur –Dhangu.
However, after some time, there was shortage of fodders in Matiyali-Dadamandi region. Malvan Rawat families were worried by shortage of fodders. They migrated towards Bhabhar or today’s Kotdwara region.  It was rainy season that tens of children of Rawat families started dying in Bhabhar region. Rawat families took the help of the original local tribe Boksa of Bhabhar who advised them to migrate towards Paino Patti (near Kolagarh). First, Rawat families did not agree to migrate towards Paino. Paino was called the region of prisoners and criminals. It was said that Shrinagar King used to send criminals in exile in Paino region. However, when the families were losing their children by unknown disease Rawat families’ older people agreed to migrate from Bhabhar to Paino Patti. Boksas guided Rawat families to walk towards Paino Patti from Kotdwara Bhabhar.  First Malvan Rawat families settled in Jaskot village of Paino. There they met Jetha Rawat families who also migrated from Udaipur-Dhangu region to Jaskot. However, Jaskot did not suit to people and buffalos due to mosquitoes.
Malwan Rawat families migrated to Malan region above in higher height than Jaskot. After some time, Malvan and Jetha Rawat felt the need of Pundit. Both invited Devrani family from Matiyali region and offered them land in Jethya village to settle there. Later on Mlavan Rawat and Jetha Rawat became Thokdar of the region.

Naming of Chhana: Inspiring Garhwali Folk Story about Brave Vrishi Ji Kukreti for Daring Managers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -67

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)
(Translated and interpreted from Kukreti Vanshavali by Chakradhar Kukreti (Gweel), 2007,)
Jaspur (Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal) is the original village of all the Kukreti community of Garhwal. Therefore, there are tens of folk stories in Jaspur about Kukreti community.
One of the famous folk tale is about the great, daring, brave Vrishi Ji or Vrikhi Ji. Shrinagar Garhwal King awarded him Veershri and that is why he was called Vrishi or Vrikhi Ji.
One of the famous folk stories is about his revolt against Shrinagar Garhwal King. The soldiers used to visit villages for collecting grains and other items as Taxes or Raj Kar. The soldiers used horses and labor to take grains (tax items) from villages to Shrinagar. On that time the rout of capital from Jaspur was to Nuagadhkhal, Goom, Taidi (all in Dhangu Patti) , Vyaschatti, Devprayag to Shrinagr.
Our great grandfather Vrikhi Ji was very much annoyed for the huge or unreasonable quantity of grains and other materials as taxes by the King. Many times, Vrishi Ji requested to tax collectors to take reasonable tax and not to take unreasonable tax (as grains etc). The tax collectors never paid attention on the request of Vrishi Ji.
Once, the tax collectors along with Kingdom soldiers were passing through a place in Jaspur with huge quantities of grains and other materials on the horses. Vrishi Ji cautioned the soldiers and fought with the Kingdom army. Vrishi Ji defeated all the soldiers in the wrestling method. The labor with soldiers ran away. Vrishi Ji took the grain and distributed the collected grains among his fellows. Soldiers ran away towards Shrinagar to complain to King.
The place where brave, revolutionist Vrishi Ji seized the grains (taxes) is called Chheena/Chhina or Chhana. Today’ Chheena or Chhana is a bordering place for Gweel and Jaspur villages. Whenever people of Jaspur or Gweel visit Chhana or Chheena they memorize the braveness and revolt of their great grandfather Vrishi Ji against Garhwal Kingdom.
Chheena or Chhana is a historical place and honorable place for all Kukretis wherever they are.

Bravery Demonstrations by Vrishi Ji Kukreti in Shrinagar Court: a Garhwali Folk Tales for Bold Managers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -70

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

(Translated and interpreted from Kukreti Vanshavali by Chakradhar Kukreti (Gweel) , 2007,)

Vrishi Ji or Vrikhi Ji Kukreti had been a legend in his life time in Jaspur an original village of all Kukretis.
Vrishi Ji always resisted paying unreasonable tax levied by the Garhwal King. Once, he seized the items collected as tax by Kingdom soldiers and tax collectors in Jaspur (now, Chhana or Cheena). The soldiers reached to Shrinagar court and complained to the King about Vrishi Ji of Jaspur –Gweel. The King sent more soldiers to catch Vrishi Ji. Vrishi Ji agreed to soldiers to present himself before the King in Shrinagar. Vrishi Ji went to Shrinagar with the state soldiers.
Vrishi Ji went to see the King in court. King had heard stories about bravery and strength of Vrishi Ji. The King was impressed by watching the strong body of Vrishi Ji. The King put condition before Vrishi Ji to show his strength and bravery. Vrishi Ji agreed to show his strength.
Vrishi Ji was asked to carry a huge metal wall of the fort gate that was lying nearby. King was surprised to watch the strength of Vrishi Ji. The King put another condition on Vrishi Ji. The King asked Vrishi Ji to carry a grain Store box (Kuthar) weighing around three quintals. Vrishi Ji carried that grain Storing box from one godown to another state godown.
The King was pleased to watch the strength of brave Vrishi Ji. Vrishi Ji explained to the King that Dhangu region was not fertile region and government taxes are similar to fertile regions or irrigated regions. The Garhwal King   reduced the taxes and retained the Thokdari of Dhangu to Vrishi Ji .

Vrishi Ji Kukreti tying King Soldiers: A Garhwali Folk Story for Daring and Caring Managers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -71

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

(Translated and interpreted from Kukreti Vanshavali by Chakradhar Kukreti (Gweel), 2007,)

There are many community stories told about the bravery of Vrishi Ji Kukreti in Jaspur and Gweel (Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal) (Please refer previous chapter too).
One of community stories about brave Vrishi Ji Kukreti of Jaspur is as under.
Vrishi Ji was rebellion and he stopped paying tax to the Shrinagar King. Shrinagar King sent his soldiers to catch Vrishi Ji and take him to Shrinagar court. The soldiers brought a rope with them to tie Vrishi Ji. Soldiers reached to village. Soldiers asked about Vrishi Ji. The villagers informed that Vrishi Ji is in Goth at region below the village (Ganvk Taul).
Eight –ten Kingdom Soldiers reached to Goath one mile below the village. Vrishi Ji had a big herd of goats. He just opened goats from Tandala (a long rope through which eight -ten or more goats are tied in Gaushala or Goath). Vrishi Ji saw that solders had a rope in bag and understood that soldiers had come to tie him. Vrishi Ji was carrying Tandala in his hand. He requested Kingdom soldiers to rest below a huge Khadik tree. Soldiers sat under Khadik tree and suddenly Vrishi Ji changed his instance in speed and tied all soldiers around the Khadik tree by his Tandala. Vrishi Ji took the rope from soldiers and tied them by that rope too. Vrishi Ji kept those solders tied on Khadik tree for hours.  Soldiers requested Vrishi Ji to untie them. Soldiers promised Vrishi Ji that they would not take Vrishi Ji to Shrinagar. Vrishi Ji untied all the soldiers. Soldiers went to Shrinagar without taking Vrishi Ji.
The place is now called Ghyar because here, soldiers surrounded Vrishi Ji and Vrishi Ji surrounded soldiers. Ghyar means to surround.

Why Do Kala Caste not Opt Panditai (or Priest ship)

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -72

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)
(Narrated by a Kala Shopkeeper of Dadamandi (Village Bhaidgaon), Sheela Patti, Pauri Garhwal in 1963)
(History records suggest that the Kala Brahmin class was the older Brahmin class of Garhwal and they were ministers with the Katyuri Kingdom. A Kala shopkeeper of Bhaidgaon told us this story when I stayed in the night in his shop in Dadamandi while coming from Dogadda to Jaspur)
Long back, Kala Brahmins were supposed to be high caste pundits for performing religious rituals. Kala Caste was supposed to be a higher Brahmin class than Uniyal, Bahuguna, Dimri, and Nautiyal (Chauth Brahmin group).
The story goes on when Kala class had a high position as court Pundit in Garhwal King (Shrinagar). Kala Pundit used to perform religious rituals of the King. Kala Pundits had a strong influence over the king and he used to take advice from Kala Pundits. Kala Pundits were very knowledgeable than their counterpart Pundits.
One day, King got a sudden success and he called all Brahmins or Pundits to take gifts. All Pundits stood in line to take gifts from the King. A knowledgeable, senior-aged Kala Pundit was also in the line of Pundits for accepting gold coins from the King. One by one, King put coins on the hand of Pundits. Knowledgeable Kala Pundit felt it insult of Knowledge that while gift offering process was on the King whom Pundits provide advice was having upper hands and Pundits had to beg their hands before the King (Dhikkar ch juu Punditon tain Hath Taul Karn Podnu ch).
Knowledgeable Pundit Kala came out of line and took a vow before all including the King that from that moment Kala caste would not perform Punditai (job of Priest ship) and advised all Kala to leave Punditai where a Pundit had to beg hand for Dakshina (gift).
From that day, Kalas did not opt for Punditai in Garhwal. Now, Kala people also perform Puja as usual.

Aswals are not Allowed entering into Tadasar Temple: a Garhwali Folk Story for Credible Mangers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -73

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

( Taken from Dr Khyat Singh Chauhan,2005, Uttam Parytan Sthal Tadasar, Shialvani, Kotdwara )
Tadasar (Tadkeshwar, Tadashwar) Mahadev Temple is an old Shiva temple. The said temple is called Jeevit Teerth or effective temple. Tadasar temple is in Bichhla Badalpur, Talla Salan, Lansdowne block, Pauri Garhwal. Tadasar is 74 KM far away from Kotdwara. People worship Tadasar Nag as Lord Shiva in this temple.
However, the specialty of Tadasar temple is that Aswal person, Sal leave (Shorea robusta) and oil or oil cooked food (Telansh) is not allowed into the temple. The folk story is as under –
Badalpur Garh or Rajgarhi (Fort) was built to defend against the attack from Bijnor region. This is also called Rikhanikhal Garh and the ruins are still there. Tadkeshwar was a temple for Rajgarhi. The chieftain of Rikhanikhal Garhi had immense belief on Tadasar. Tadasar is called a Buldan or Dhawadya Divta (the deity that calls, cautions, or informs). At need, Tadasar deity used to call the Rikhanikhal Raja.
In Kalagarh region, there was an Aswal chieftain. Aswal worshipped Dhari devta (related to Katyuri). Once, a opposite Chieftain and Aswal chieftain planned to attack Rikhanikhal Garh chieftain. Aswal Chieftain knew that Tadasar deity would call Rikhanikhal Chieftain about the attack. Tadasar deity always used to call Rikhanikhal Garhi chieftain about misfortune or adversary in advance.  Aswal Chieftain thought to weaken the power of Dhawadya Divta Tadasar. Aswal ruler went into the temple with Hot Halva, oil on Sal tree, and pasted the Idol by oil and hot Halva. Aswal chieftain thought that by this trick, Dhawadya Divta that is Tadasar deity would not call Rikhanikhal ruler. However, Tadasar deity informed Rikhanikhal ruler about the planning of Aswal chieftain and another chieftain.
From that very day, entry of any Aswal, Sal leave, and oil are prohibited into the temple compound.

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

Bhuwaneshwari temple is in Brahmkut hills near Neelkanth temple (Udaipur Patti, Pauri Garhwal). There is a two and half feet high sculpture of mother Bhuwaneshwari. Bhuwaneshwari is worshipped here as Lal Bajrangi form. The exclusivity of the Bhuvaneshwari temple is   that Rawat (Rajput) family of Kheda (Udaipur Patti manages the temple rituals.
The story goes that when lord Shiva gulp Poison (at the time of Ocean churning) and kept it stayed at his neck he felt the poisonous effect of the Visha. Lord Shiva came to calm down the poison effect at Manikut hills –Neelkanth (configuring place of Madhumati and Chandrabhaga Rivers) and started performing Concentration (Tapsya). His wife Sati came in search of her husband Shiva there. She saw that Lord Shiva is concentrating. Sati started performing Tapsya at nearby hill Brahmkut hill. Due to Tapsya performance by Sati the place is called Sidh Peeth.                Later on, the devotees built a temple of Bhuvaneshwari here.

Ghamandi ko Murko Dhnnee (Arrogance invites Death): A Garhwali folk Story for Chief Executive Officers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -80

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)
(Regional Folk Story from Ravain Region taken from Jagdish Prasad Naudiyal, 2011, Uttarakhand ki Sanskritik Dharohar)
                              घमंडी को मुरको ध्न्नी

There was a crow and an elephant. The crow constructed its nest on the road. There were crow kids in the nest. An elephant used to pass from that road on daily basis.
One day, the crow requested the elephant not to pass from that road as crow had an apprehension that its nest would break by the elephant. The elephant was arrogant and he did not care for crow's request. Elephants regularly passed through that road. One day, due to elephant foot the nest got destroyed.
The crow called his friends. The cow told his story. The rat told me that I shall dig the pit and the elephant would fall on that pit. The vulture told that as soon as the elephant would fall into the ditch he would pierce the elephant's eyes by his beak.
The rat dug the pit. The arrogant Elephant was passing through the path and did not look at the pit on his way and fell down into pit. As soon as the elephant fell, the waiting vulture pierced his eyes by the sharp beak. The arrogant elephant died there and there.
Don’t be arrogant otherwise would die as that elephant died.

Ban Bakya: A Garhwali Folktale for Political Managers about ‘Loss by Falsehood”

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -76

                            बण बक्या
              (रवाईं गढ़वाल क्षेत्र की लोक कथा)

He spread the news that his son has become a true future teller (Bakya). At the same time, there was theft in the King's Palace. The spies could not find the thief. People informed the king that there was a future teller that would find the thief.
The king sent his men to get the future in the palace. The King's employees took the future teller in the palace. The court servants served the future teller with warmth and full of comfort. The so-called future teller was in distress and torturous condition. He was feeling the soft bed as the spike bed.  He could not sleep for a single moment. Repeatedly, he was going out and coming in his room.
He was thinking in his mind,” Now bear the consequences of being a False Future Teller.”
