Pandava Nritya

 
Pandava Nritya is a folk dance of Uttaranchal. It depicts scenes related to the Pandavas, who are the main characters in the Mahabharata. This dance is predominantly performed in the villages of Chamoli and Pauri Garhwal districts, the regions believed to be closely associated with the epic.
Pandava Nritya is usually performed during the auspicious festivals of Dussehra and Diwali. This dance involves men, who dance around a fire.

The artists enact various scenes related to the Pandavas. While some artists do the acting, other artists sing the praise of the legendary heroes and simultaneously produce music by beating on drums like the Dhol and the Daman.

Langvir Nritya


Langvir Nritya is a popular dance form native to Tehri Garhwal District of Uttaranchal. This dance contains a series of acrobatic moves and is performed exclusively by men.
A bamboo pole, fixed on the ground, is required for the performance of Langvir Nritya. The main dancer climbs on the top of this pole and balances his body using his stomach. Balancing in this manner, he performs a series of acrobatics like rotating on stomach and movements using hands and feet.

While the movements are carried out on the top of the pole, the musicians down below give the music using percussion instruments like Dhol and Daman. This dance is a major attraction among the local population of the region.

Jhumeila Dance

 Jhumeila is a famous folk dance of Uttaranchal. It is usually performed during the Baisakhi festival. This dance is mostly performed by women, although men occasionally participate in it.
The Jhumeila dance depicts the feelings of a newly married woman, who misses the happy moments that she lived before her marriage. She yearns for the days that she spent with her parents, brothers and sisters.

The Jhumeila dance is also performed by the newly married grass cutters, who share their sorrow of parting with the loved ones

Chounphula Dance

 


Chounphula is a seasonal folk dance of Uttaranchal. It is performed during the Baisakhi Festival, which marks the harvest period. This dance form is not restricted to any particular community. Both men and women participate in this group dance to celebrate the harvest.
