Bhotiya Dance is a folk dance performed by Bhotias, an Uttaranchal tribal group, with Tibetan origins. This dance form is associated with death ceremonies. It is believed that, the soul of the dead person resides in the body of a goat or sheep, and by dancing the soul can be liberated

Thadiya

Thadiya is a folk dance performed during Vasanth Panchami Festival in Uttaranchal. It is accompanied by song. The word ‘Thadiya’ denotes a courtyard where dance is enacted to welcome the spring season. It is performed by womenfolk on all joyous occasions, especially when they return to their parental home from in-laws' house. This dance form is associated with the marriage of Shiva and Parvati.

Jhoda Songs

Jhoda are songs native to Uttaranchal. These songs are usually meant to accompany group dances held on special occasions. They are also called Chanchari songs in some parts of the region. ‘Jhoda Dalna’ is the common term used for these songs.
The Jhoda songs usually form the background for community dances. These dances involve men and women, who move in circles holding each other’s hands singing. The songs are not restricted to any particular style of singing.

Pona

 


Pona is a local folk dance performed during marriages and parties in Uttaranchal. Men and women dress colorfully and dance to the tunes of the drums and ransinghas (huge copper bugles.) Pona is accompanied by song.

Rituraina Song

Rituraina is a variety of song popular in the Kumaon region of Uttaranchal. These songs mark the arrival of the spring season. They are sung by a singer community locally known as ' Dholis' or 'Mirasis.'
The troupe of singers travels to different villages during the spring season and sing the Rituraina songs. These songs, containing the very essence of the beautiful season, are the source of livelihood for the singers. Following a performance, the villagers give them alms which is called 'chaitol' in the local slang.

In the earlier days, dances used to be performed to the tunes of these songs. Such kind of performance was termed 'Kafaliya.' This kind of performance still exists today, but only rarely.

यह मूलत: वीर रस के गाने हैं. खेतों में काम करते समय थकान मिटाने के उद्देश्य से इन ऊर्जावान गीतों को गायक हुङके की थाप के साथ गाता है.

खरि कै जांणी ब्याव है गै रुफुला हो
भैंसी का खरि का जानू रुफुला हो
सीकी म्होंगी भ्यार ल्यै दे रुफुला हो
तौछ तौछ तेरि खपीरी भ्यूं राजा हो
मैं हुणी के ल्याला राजा भ्यूं राजा हो
दूधे की मलाई ल्यूंलो भ्यूं राजा हो
मैं हुणी के ल्याला राजा भ्यूं राजा हो
दही को च्यूंटा ल्यूंलो भ्यूं राजा हो
