                                        By: Bhishma Kukreti

The present story is related to brave Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari who dug the tunnel to bring water canal up to his village Maletha. Usually, Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari of Garhwal army and Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari of Maleth village are said to be same. However, the history does not match with folk sayings for two great personalities being same.

(Tal-Thadya Geet)

One day, Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari returned to his village from court. He was tired. Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari asked his sister in law for meal. His sister in law offered him bread without vegetable. Unhappily, he asked vegetable. Sarcastically, his sister in law tells that there is no water canal in his village that the villagers would enjoy vegetable a s spinach, onion, garlic and other green vegetables.
Madho Singh Bhandari felt insulted. He tells his sister in law to dig canal. She tells that it is the job of men to dig canal.
Second day, Madho Singh Bhandari reached to court. The court men insulted him that there is no water canal in his village.
Madho Singh Bhandari took vow to get water canal in his village.
There was a hill in between Chandrabhaga River and his village. Bhandari performed necessary rituals. Bhandari took necessary appliances and started digging tunnel to get Chandrabhaga water to his village Maleth. Slowly, slowly he started to cut hill for making tunnel. After watching his hard work, villagers also came to help him.
One day, he took his son Gaje Singh with him.  He and villagers were busy in cutting the hill for making tunnel. In the mean time a stone ascended on the head of Gaje Singh.  Gaje Singh died there only. He completed the work of tunnel making work on the same day.
Water started reaching to Maleth from Chandrabhaga River.
Now Maletha village was able to grow various types of vegetables and rice.

Madho Singh Bhandari is one the great Indian personalities who showed the world about taking cause till it is finished.

Mani business man becomes ready for business going to Ladakh far away from Johar Kumaon. He goes to Joshi pundit to know auspicious date. The family members become sad about his going to Ladakh as Ladakh is far away from Johar.  However, Mani assured that he would come back very soon.
His wife Kampasi also became sad and suspicious.  Kampasi asked her husband that he was going to Hun des. Where should she go? He assured his wife. He tells that his relatives are jealous so she has to be careful. He tells that in case he is delayed she should marry their daughter.
The old mother of Kampasi weeps too. She is unaware about their life in his absence.
Many decades have passed but Kampasi did not return. Kampasi spent her whole life in waiting for her husband.
The said sad folk song draws attention on the struggle of Bhotiya communities.

The folk literature creators of Garhwal and Kumaon were Vadi and Hudkya communities. Women used to create folk songs on their regional subjects and contemporary subject.
Landslides, flooding have been common in hills of Garhwal and Kumaon. There had been many folk songs about Himalayan disasters such as landslides, flooding, forest fire, cloud bursting etc from the ancient age.  However, such folk songs remained alive only if they became popular among people and had durability purpose.
The following folk song is based on true events of flooding in Nayar River at Satpuli, Pauri Garhwal. The flooding of Satpuli in August 1951 washed away land and hundreds of motors standing there.

It was August - September 1951.
The Motors washed away by flood.
There was order that the officer would check the motors.
There was order that the officer would check the components of motors
There was to bring all motors.
The officers informed that there would be checking next day.
 He advised to sleep.
While we were sleeping, there was a heavy rain.
The rain water reached up to roof of motors.
We were afraid.
The Nayar River flood washed away all motors.
O mother! Don’t weep for me.

The said folk song is still popular in Garhwal.

Kaliya Nag Jagar: Asian/Oriental Ritual Folk Song about Krishna Winning Kaliya Nag (Cobra)

Krishna’s activities are nearer to common man. Therefore Krishna influenced every society and Krishna became hero of every society. In Garhwal-Kumaon, Lord Ram is worshipped as ideal person, therefore less folk literature is created about Rama.
There are many folk songs, folklores, folktales and folk saying about Krishna in Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar.
One of the religious or ritual folk songs (Jagar) about Krishna is his winning to Kaliya Nag. The story has clear local color that Krishna advised Kaliya Nag to shift from Gokul to Uttarakhand.

There was a great snake Kali Nag in Kalidah tank into Yamuna. He had sixteen hundred queens. Once with his shepherd friends, Krishna was playing ball. The ball fell into Kalidah tank. Krishna jumped into Kalidah tank. His friends were afraid and ran away to village. Krishna’s mother Jasoda started weeping madly.

Krishna reached to court of Kali Nag. He played his flute. The sixteen hundred queens were attracted to beauty of Krishna.
All snake queens advised Krishna to return back as Kali Nag was very angry snake. Krishna told the queens he would go back only after taking gold ball with silver rings. The queens informed that the ball is into s mouth of Kali Nag who was sleeping. Queen snakes advised him that Kali Nag would flow his deathly poison on him. Krishna did not listen to snake queens. He put his hand into Kali Nag mouth and got the ball out. Kali Nag awoke. The great snake started stirring his fifty two mouthed hoods. Krishna rode on snake hood. Krishna won over the great snake kali Nag. Krishna started dancing over snake hood.
Kaliya nag reminded Krishna that he helped his father Vasudev crossing Yamuna when Krishna was born. Kali Nag reminded Krishna that he covered child Krishna by his hood. Krishna advised Kaliya Nag to leave Gokul and shift to Uttarakhand. Krishna blessed Kaliya Nag that Kaliya Nag family would flourish in Uttarakhand and Nag would be worshipped by people there.

The villagers with Nand and Jasoda came to Yamuna bank. They saw that Krishna was dancing on snake hood. Krishna came out of tank. Everybody was pleased.
Kaliya nag shifted from Gokul to Uttarakhand and flourished here. He is our God.

Krishna with his shepherd friends was in grazing place. Krishna played his flute. Rukmani was attracted to flute music and used to come there regularly. Rukmani dressed and put on ornaments. She came there where Krishna was playing flute. Krishna was a magician. Krishna created a river there and stood there as boatman. Rukmani came there and she asked boatman for crossing river. She asked him about crossing fare. Krishna as boatman/helmsman told her the fare would be as per her wish.
When boat reached in the centre of river, Krishna left rudders. Krishna asked fare. Rukmani told him that she would give fare in thousands after crossing the river. Krishna did not follow her request. Krishna asked Rukmani to call him Jeeja(elder sister’s husband). Rukmani did not call Krishna Jeeja as he was back colored. When the boat was just to sink, Rukmani called Krishna,” O Jeeja! Please cross me the river.”
After crossing the river, Krishna became bangle seller. While showing bangles to Rukmani, Krishna caught her hand. He left her hand only when she called him as Jeeja.
At last, Krishna told to Rukmani that he was interested to marry her.
Some shepherds became Brahmin, some played role of drum players and others played the roles of guests. Krishna married with Rukmani there.

There is slight difference between a Kumaoni Jagar (Folk Song) and Mahabharata epic story about Draupadi Swayambar (a princess choosing Husband). In Kumaoni folktale song, Arjun comes as Sage or Jogi in the Swayambar.  There is also difference in Kumaoni folk song tale that the kings had to pierce Kaudi set on the hair of Draupadi. Otherwise the average story is that kings had to pierce eye of fish.

King Drupad had a daughter Draupadi. Her name was Kamsin before marriage. King Drupad went to astrologer to know about future of Draupadi. The astrologer advised that King should not carry on arranged marriage for Draupadi but should arrange Swayambar. The astrologer advised to king Drupad to call princes and Kings from seven regions.
When Draupadi became young king Drupad organized Swayambar for Draupadi that she could choose husband. King Drupad invited kings and princes from seven regions including Hastinapur.
All the four brothers of Arjun and his mother Kunti advised Arjun to participate in the Draupadi Swayambar.
Arjun took the Jogi appearance as per his friend’s advice. As Jogi, Arjun went to Drupad kingdom at Swayambar place.
Arjun hide his bow and arrow below his Asan and sat here.
The condition was that the winning prince or king had to pierce a Kaudi (a shell) set on the hair of Draupadi by his arrow watching shell in the oil in a vessel. Draupadi was sitting above on a chariot.
No king could pierce Kaudi by his arrow. At last, Arjun stood up and asked bow and arrow. Every defeated king offered him his bow but Arjun did not like any bow and arrow. Drupad offered Arjun a bow weighing twenty ton. Arjun broke the bow. At the end Arjun pierced the Kaudi by his arrow and his bow.
Now as per condition, Draupadi was wife of Arjun who was in the appearance of Jogi. However, Drupad put another condition that a garland would be thrown and garland would fall on whoever neck Draupadi would marry him. The Garland was thrown into sky and that garland fell on the neck of Arjun. Drupad was sad that his daughter had to spend life in poor conditions.
 Draupadi went with Arjun.
In a place Draupadi felt thirsty. Draupadi asked Arjun to bring water. Draupadi told him that Wherever Tushar bush tress would be there and Nyoli bird would be whistling there would be water. Arjun went to bring water. He changes his appearance and came in his original appearance of prince Arjun. Arjun brought water but Draupadi refused to take water from stranger. Arjun told her that he is not Jogi but he is Arjun.
Kamsin sent message to her parents that Arjun is prince. Drupad arranged marriage procession and rituals for marrying Kamsin with Arjun. Now, Kamsin was called Draupadi after marrying with Arjun.

Who is there far away on that hill? What is that tree?
On that hill, there is Kafal tree.
Pluck Kafal fruits but don’t cut/destroy Kafal tree.
On that hill, there is Burans tree.
Pluck Burans flowers but don’t cut/destroy Burans tree.
If you destroy/cut tree we shall complain to elders about destruction of tree.
We shall complain to elders about destruction of tree, we shall complain to elders about destruction of tree.

The Work folk song is a piece of folk music connected closely to a specific work. The work folk song could be sung at the time of work or at other time. E. Gioia (2006, Work Songs) states that work songs are as old as the human societies. Gioia divided agrarian and pastorals songs into following classes that had been altered by this author as division of work folk songs-
1-Hunting folk songs
2-Cultivation folk songs
3-Herding folk songs
4-Modern industrial folk songs for seaman, factory workers, cowboys, mine workers etc.
The following Garhwali folk song is about paddy plantation.

                 Translation, Interpretation by: Bhishma Kukreti

Kenyan Folk Song depicting pain of childlessness or barrenness woman

Pain of barren woman is universal phenomenon. Johan Tyman describes in length a Kenyan folktale/folk song about a woman’s prayer from a barren (childless woman) woman as-
O thou who is worshipped remember this debt
The debt that cows do not pay
Tree branches that I cut do not pay
The water I fetch for him does not pay
If I go inside well it does not pay
It is only the human child that would pay it

Ravanlti Folk Song Depicting Pain of Childlessness /Barrenness of Woman

There are various folk songs related to pain of women in Ravanlti language. The present folk song  illustrates pain, suffering, struggle of a childless woman and harassment from mother in law for being a barren woman.

A Woman to other –
Sister1 why are you so weak?
Sister! Why your face is so grim?
Tell me reason for you being sad.
Replay from other woman-
Should I speak about my weakness?
Should I tell about my face being grim?
I don’t deliver child.
My mother in law harasses me and taunts too for my barrenness.

The Asian folk song describes the pain of having husband’s another wife.
The father asks his daughter about reasons for her pain in this Asian traditional song.
The father asks about his married daughter for not putting on jewels those he gifted to her at marriage.
The daughter states that her husband’s another wife (rival wife) put on all the jewels as necklace, ear ring, ring, big bangles, and foot ring etc.
The daughter blames everything on her luck that her husband has another wife too.
