Gobind Ballabh Pant (1887-1961)

Gobind Ballabh Pant was born on 10 September 1887 in Almora in Uttar Pradesh. Gobind showed brilliance from the very beginning. While in Muir College, Allahabad, for graduation, he happened to come across a speech by Gokhale in 1907, which instilled in him the spirit of nationalism, and he decided not to be a slave of the Government.

Although he belonged to an orthodox family, he held progressive views on social reforms. He was in favour of western education adapted to the national needs. As a nationalist, he believed in India’s unity. He always held that the unity of India, despite the diversity, was a living, reality, and that caste, communal or religious barriers should not be allowed to imperil that unity.

In the National Movement he soon became one of the top-ranking all-India leaders in the Congress. He was an active participant in both the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Civil Disobedience Movement. After the 1937 elections, he was elected unopposed as the leader of the Congress Party in U.P. and became the first Chief Minister of U.P. He was the leader of the U.P. Congress for many decades and served as the Chief Minister of the biggest State in India for the longest term. As Chief Minister he showed great administrative ability and introduced many urgently needed reforms in the State.

In 1939, when India was dragged into the World War II, responding to the call given by the Congress, Govind Ballabh, resigned his post and participated in the individual Satyagraha Movement launched by Gandhiji. After the war was over elections were held to the Provincial legislature, he was again chosen as leader of the Party in U.P. and again became the Chief Minister of the State. But following the untimely death of Sardar Vallbhbhai Patel, Pant was taken into the Central Cabinet and given the very important portfolio of Home Affairs. Like Sardar Patel, Pant proved himself to be man of action and firm determination. He endeared himself not only to the people in general, but also to the officials who appreciated his character and method of work. He was an effective public orator and could sway the audience by his impressive diction and force of argument.

He died on 7 March 1961.

पंत जी की स्म्रति में डाक टिकट भी जारी किया गया.
