Orde Wingate

Major General Orde Charles Wingate, DSO (February 26, 1903 – March 24, 1944), was a British major general and creator of two special military units during World War II.

Beginnings
Orde Wingate was born 26 February 1903 in Naini Tal, India to a military family. Because his mother came from a missionary family affiliated with the Plymouth Brethren, he received a very religious education and was introduced to Christian Zionist ideas at a very young age.

In 1921 Wingate was accepted into the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and received his gunnery officer's commission in 1923. He also began to learn Arabic and eventually got himself an assignment to Sudan through an uncle, Sir Reginald Wingate, Governor General of Sudan.

When Wingate arrived in Sudan to join the Sudan Defence Forces in 1928, he was assigned to patrol the Abyssinian border where he was to catch slave traders and ivory poachers. He changed the method of regular patrolling to ambushes. At the end of his tour, he led a short expedition to search for Zerzura, but did not find it. His tour ended in 1933. In 1935 he married Lorna Moncrieff Paterson who was sixteen years old at the time.

[edit] Palestine and the Special Night Squads
In 1936 Wingate was assigned to Palestine to a staff office position and became an intelligence officer. From his arrival, he saw the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine as being a religious duty toward the literal fulfillment of Christian prophecy and he immediately put himself into absolute alliance with Jewish political leaders.

Arab guerrillas had at the time of his arrival begun a campaign of attacks against both British mandate officials and Jewish communities, which became known as the Arab Revolt.

Wingate became politically involved with a number of Zionist leaders. He formulated an idea of armed groups of British led Jewish commandos, and took his idea personally to Archibald Wavell, who was then a commander of British forces in Palestine. After Wavell gave his permission, Wingate convinced the Zionist Jewish Agency and the leadership of Haganah, the Jewish armed group.

In June 1938 the new British commander, General Haining, gave his permission to create the Special Night Squads, armed groups formed of British and Haganah volunteers. This is the first instance of the British recognising Haganah's legitimacy as a Jewish defence force.[1] The Jewish Agency helped pay salaries and other costs of the Haganah personnel.

Wingate trained, commanded and accompanied them in their patrols. They ambushed Arab saboteurs who attacked oil pipelines of the Iraq Petroleum Company and raided border villages the attackers had used as bases, imposing severe collective punishments that were sometimes frowned on by Zionist leaders as well as British. His methods were nonetheless effective.

However, his deepening direct political involvement with the Zionist cause and an incident where he spoke publicly in favour of formation of a Jewish state during his leave in Britain, caused his superiors in Palestine to remove him from command. He was so deeply associated with political causes in Palestine that his superiors considered him compromised as an intelligence officer in the country. He was promoting his own agenda rather than that of the army or the government.

In May 1939, he was transferred back to Britain. Wingate became a hero of the Yishuv (the Jewish Community), and was loved by leaders such as Zvi Brenner and Moshe Dayan who had trained under him, and who claimed that Wingate had "taught us everything we know."

Wingate's political attitudes toward Zionism were heavily influenced by his Plymouth Brethren religious views and belief in certain eschatological doctrines.

Uday Shankar

Uday Shankar founded his famous dance school in Almora in 1938 in a place called "Pine Lodge", which was later shifted to Kolkata after the World War II. His younger brother Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and the great Hindi film maker Guru Dutt studied in this school.

Crank's Ridge
The pine-covered Crank’s Ridge or Hippie Hill, is located on the way to Kasar Devi temple near Almora, Uttarakhand, India, a quaint Kathmanduesque town and the ancient capital of Kumaon. It is considered a great spot for spending long hours in quiet solitude, as it has a magnificent view of the Himalayas. Kasar Devi is a temple near Almora where Swami Vivekananda once came to meditate in the late 19th century.

The ridge begame a haunt for bohemian artists, writers and spiritual seekers in the 1930s, including W. Y. Evans-Wentz, Lama Angarika Govinda (both notable western Tibetan Buddhists), Earl Brewster, an American artist, and Danish mystic Alfred Sorensen. In the 1960s and 70s, luminaries of the counter-culture made pilgrimages to the ridge to visit these established inhabitants. Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert and R. D. Laing visited Lama Govinda. And in the mid-seventies Alfred ‘Sunyata’ Sorensen was taken to San Francisco by the Alan Watts society.

A cult destination, it now has a small community of backpackers and ex-hippies settled there ever since the place gained the reputation of being a Power Centre during the hippie hey-days. This reputation is due to the alleged gap in the Van Allen Belt above the ridge, a perception arguably strengthened by the free and easy availability of hemp on the slopes.

Two biographies that center on two of its residents are: PILGRIM OF THE CLEAR LIGHT:THE BIOGRAPHY OF DR. WALTER EVANS-WENTZ and A THOUSAND JOURNEYS:A BIOGRAPHY OF LAMA ANAGARIKA GOVINDA. There is also a Buddhist meditation center on the ridge.

Now read this..

* NIRAJ BALUTIA

Niraj Balutia is my best companion today. She is born and brought up in India, but has lived in Sweden since 1974. She has studied law and is at present a diplomat (attaché) at a Swedish Embassy abroad. She has lived many years in the university town of Uppsala in Sweden, so she considers it her home town

Niraj in her "home town" Uppsala, with the famous Cathedral in the background

Niraj is born in a very beautiful town in northern India, in a state called Uttarakhand (known as Uttaranchal during 2000-2006, but obtained the present name in January 2007). The town is called Nainital, surrounding lake Naini (tal means lake). Incidentally, the great "emperor" of bhajans (Bhajan Samraat) and of ghazals, who gives considerable solace in music, Anup Jalota, was also born in Nainital. The former chief minister of Uttarakhand, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, is a cousin to Niraj's father.

Kausani a hill station where Mahatma Gandhi spent some happy days in 1929. Gandhiji stayed at the Anasakti Ashram, where he explored the Anasakti Yoga. The Ashram used to be a guesthouse in a tea estate, and is now a research centre and library. A Gandhi memorial has been erected here and evening prayers are said in the main hall. There is a regular flow of pilgrims trying to combine a glimpse of the sanctum with a view of the spectacular sunset.

Ram Kapoor

Ram Kapoor has a few notches under his belt and is considered an accomplished actor in the tele world. He is looked upon as a role model by aspiring young actors. His major career hits has been Kasamh Se on Zee TV produced by Ekta Kapoor and Ghar Ek Mandir, also produced by Ekta Kapoor. Ghar Ek Mandir finished its last season last year. Along with his two mega hit tele shows he did a handful of other Serials as well before hitting it big. He went through a number of flops. His career was so weak in the beginning that he was forced to do theatre work to pay the rent. He did side roles on low budget unrecognized movies for a short period of time. When asked as to how films and Serials differ Ram said, "There is a world of difference between Films and TV in terms of acting. In films you have the luxury of time so you can really get inside your character and try and work in a lot more detail where as in TV, it is exactly the opposite because you are always fighting against time in." Though Ram hit a few rough patches Kasamh Se shed light on his true acting ability and prowess. When asked about his own acting ability modest Ram said, "I rate myself an average or may be an above average actor. I am not as versatile as I would like to be. I think I need a lot of growing to do as an artist." Acting ability aside the one woman and friend who has made Ram a star has to be Ekta Kapoor. Ekta played a large part in gaining so many adoring fans for Ram Kapoor. By casting him in large roles for two mega tele hits she has made Ram a star. And never the less Ram is extremely thankful. Ekta, Ram and Gautami are very good friends. When asked as to how he became an actor Ram surprisingly revealed that he never wanted to be one:

"Though I studied in Sherwood, Nainital, which is known for football and theatre, I was good in neither. Prominent theater personality Amir Raza Hussain used to come from Delhi to direct plays. When I was in ninth standard, I had a fight with the head boy. As a punishment he sent me for an audition. I was selected for a play. I did five performances and people appreciated them. Later, I learnt that he selected me not for my acting skills but for my voice and diction. I did a lot of plays in college and wanted to pursue a career in acting. So I decided to first go abroad and study acting. Ram also appeared as an extra and had very little parts in the movie Monsoon Wedding. I choose Stanislovsky School of Method Acting in America because method actors have always inspired me. When I applied for the first time, I was rejected. I tried again and in the second year I got in. I then graduated from acting school and came to India."
