Negi in three-way battle at the top

Delhi’s Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi chalked out an easy victory over compatriot Abhijeet Kunte to maintain a clean slate after the second round of the Asian Individual Chess Championship.

With his second victory in as many games, Parimarjan took his tally to two points and now shares the lead with the Chinese duo of Bu Xiangzhi and Yu Yangyi and Rinat Zumabayev of Kazakhstan. Second seed Krishnan Sasikiran bounced back with an emphatic victory over Shahin Sadeh of Iran, Surya Shekhar Ganguly crashed through the defenses of another Iranian Mohammad Miran Khademi while B Adhiban outwitted Gao Rui of China.

In the all-Indian duels, SP Sethuraman proved superior to M Shyam Sundar and G N Gopal did not face many problems in cruising past Vaibhav Suri. The other Indian in the fray — Debashish Das — lost to Indonesian GM Megaranto Susanto while P Harikrishna played out a draw on the top board with Chinese Wen Yang.

Negi had little to do with black as Kunte blundered early. The Semi-Slav defense by Negi gave him good opportunities after Kunte went for unwarranted complications and ended up losing his queen for just a rook. The rest was easy as Parimarjan completed the formalities in 35 moves.

Parimarjan Negi

Parimarjan Negi became the youngest Indian to win the Grandmaster norm in the year 2005. He is also the world's youngest International Master in chess. Parimarjan was born to Paridhi Negi February 9, 1993, in Uttarakhand and shifted to Delhi with his family at a very early age. His father is an Air Traffic Controller while his mom is an executive in Life Insurance Corporation of India.

With his inborn talents, Parimarjan Negi started learning chess before he was 5 years of age. Being a part of Amity International School, Saket, New Delhi, was a boon for him because the school encouraged him all through to maintain his education and yet aspire for an ambitious future in Chess.

The notable achievements of Parimarjan Negi at International Level includes gold medal in Asian Youth Chess Championship 2002 and Commonwealth Championship 2003, both in the under-10 category. Negi finished with a silver medal in Commonwealth Championship 2004 in the under-14 category. He won bronze medals in the Asian Youth Championship 2003 in the under-10 Category and World Youth Championship 2004 in the under-12 Category.

The illustrious career of Parimarjan Negi also included gold in the National Sub-Junior Championship 2004 in the under-15 category, which was a record breaking performance. At a very early age, he had also been the proud recipient of gold medals in events like National under-9 Championship in 2002 and National under-11 Championship in 2003. He had also won a silver medal in the National under-7 Championship in 2000.

From - J B Singh Negi (Father of Parimarjan Negi Ji)

I would like to draw your attention to my son Parimarjan Negi who has been conferred by prestigious “Arjuna Award 2010” by the Hon’ble President of India in recognition to his outstanding achievement in the field of sports. He has been excelling in the game of chess for the past many years and has remained in the national limelight through the vast coverage of his achievements in his Chess career so far. I would like to emphasize the fact that the Chess Prodigy belongs to Uttarakhand, and that having started playing Chess in 1999 at the age of five years went on to become the second youngest Grand Master in the history of the game in 2006. Since then Parimarjan has won various other international events and continues to pursue his ambition of reaching the elite of this sporting field. Parimarjan is current Asian champion and lone qualifier for the “World Championship 2013”
His mother, Mrs. Paridhi Dhasmana Negi comes from Pauri Garhwal and is the daughter of well known Social and Human Rights activist Shri Rajendra Dhasmana. We both belong to a remote area in Chamoli, viz., Bachhuwaban adajacent to Gairsain. Our family had to settle in Delhi because of the more prosperous means of livelihood here as is the case of most of the Pravasi Uttarakhandis. As parents we have tried to arrange the best support system for Parimarjan- coaches, seconds, playing partners etc, and participation in the top events, and for all these activities he has to travel abroad time and again. Since Parimarjan is also very popular amongst the youth in India & Uttarakhand I think he could be a youth brand ambassador for the State and could help in promotion of Chess and other sports.Parimarjan has been bringing laurels to the Nation and especially to the State of Uttarakhand. He may be considered for an official recognition for having brought laurels to the Nation and the nation-state of Uttarakhand bothWe have enlisted some of Parimarjan’s achievements in enclosures. (J. B. Singh Negi)Father of Parimarjan Negi Arjuna Awardee

International Grand Master
Arjuna Awardee 2010

ELO Rating: 2641

Profile

In a short span of his illustrious sports career, Parimarjan Negi has won laudable laurels for the Great Nation.
India has emerged as a chess power in the world of chess in the recent past, which is not surprising, given that
Chess, known for long as Shatranj, is a game which embodies the essence and spirit of the nation itself. What is
surprising is the level of strength a eighteen year old has reached and the innumerable milestones he has crossed
enroute, at each stage, making his nation proud. Parimarjan is the second youngest ever Grand Master in the
history of the game. He is the youngest ever Indian to achieve the Grand Master Title and International Master
Title. Parimarjan made his first mark as a seven year old by the turn of the millennium and in less than a decade,
has stormed to the highest echelons to join illustrious predecessors and contemporaries. In his pursuit of
excellence, Parimarjan has added numerous youth medals in World, Asian, and Commonwealth championships.
He has now become youngest ever Asian Individual champion at the age of 19 years.

A keen learner of the best techniques in the game, he has displayed level headedness even when pitted
against top notch international players. He has been trained in the game by outstanding coaches ……, whose
expectations he has lived up to. Parimarjan has always been a sportsperson indoctrinated to the “NATION FIRST”
philosophy, and shall continue to add feathers to its cap.

The youngest Indian in the World to:

Become a Grandmaster

Become an International Master

Win three International titles in a year.

Become Asian Continental Championship
