Bhavani Datt Thapliyal: First Modern Garhwali Playwright
Garhwali Dramatists/Playwrights, Dramatists, Drama Activists -2
                                        By: Bhishma Kukreti

Bhavani Datt Thapliyal is first Modern Playwright of Garhwali Language. Bhavani Datt Thapliyal wrote two major Modern Stage Plays in Garhwali Language.
Bhavani Datt Thapliyal was born in Khaid village, Mawalsyun of Pauri Garhwal in 1867.  The first Modern Garhwali dramatist Bhawani Datt Thapliyal expired on 29th April 1932. His grandson Urmil Thapliyal is famous Dramatist of Hindi and Garhwali.
Bhawani Datt Thapliyal worked with state service in District Board of British Raj. Bhawani Datt Thapliyal started Hindi poetry in his literature career but later on shifted to Garhwali language literature.   Bhawani Datt Thapliyal published a few Garhwali poems too.
Bhawani Datt Thapliyal wrote Garhwali Language Jay Vijay Drama in 1911.  However, he wrote Bhakta Prahlad in 1913 before jay Vijay. Since, Bhakt Prahlad was first published in 1930 that is why ‘Bhakta Prahlad’ play is called first Modern Garhwali Stage Play. In reality Jay Vijay is first written second Garhwali Stage Play.
There are other plays are as part of Bhakt Prahlad as Baba ji Ki kapal Kriya, Faundar ki Kachhedi.
Bhawani Datt used the epic as base for his dramas. The playwright was capable of showing the corrupt methods in British Raj. There are many social, cultural, administrative, educational ills shown in the dramas and surprisingly, the dramas are still relevant. The theme did not lose its relevancy at all. It might be said that the subject are evergreen in the dramas of Bhavani Datt Thapliyal.
The characters are named in such way that the dramas become interesting. Many characters as Murkhanand, Ghimnadu, Durachari Durmati, Jimindar Ji  are symbolic characters and are still relevant in the society.
The dialogues clear the situation very effectively as –
Bin pani Banji Sar, Beej bhi Khaigaun Kismatmaar.
Gothan Goru Gay Gothyar, Mai Jimindar Ji Jimindaar Ji
Characterization is perfect in his dramas. The dialogues are effective in exposing psychological aspects of the character.
Durmati- Jhatpat Utha Danda aur Jaldi Lhau Gunda, Bhukunda
Doot- A ! kya bolde -khund balinda?
The dialogues are the central points of Dramas by Thapliyal. The dialogues are sharp, satirical with lot of humor. Thapliyal also offered songs to speed up dramas or for creating the atmosphere as required. The prose dialogues are also in poetic design and having flow.
The place of Bhawani Datt Thapliyal in World Drama is as of Russian Playwrights Alexander Ablesimov, Leonid Andreyev, German Playwrights as August W Iffland,  Bertolt Brecht, Horvath,  Goethe;  French Playwrights as  Antonin Artaud, Ionesco,  Zola, Sartre; UK English Playwrights as  William Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Denmark Henrick Ibsen etc.  in the world drama.

Ishwari Datt Juyal: A Garhwali Playwright of Social Theme

Garhwali Dramatists/ Playwrights, Dramatists, Drama Activists -8
                                        By: Bhishma Kukreti
Less is known about Ishwari Datt Juyal ‘Sharma’. Ishwari Datt Juyal was born in village Khettu of Khatali Patti, district Pauri Garhwal. Ishwari Datt Juyal joined Indian railway in Karachi (now Pakistan). Ishwari Datt Juyal was also a social worker in Karachi. He took active part in Pravasi Garhwali Organization of Karachi.
Ishwari Datt Juyal wrote, published a Garhwali stage Play ‘Parivartan’ in 1934. The play was also staged in Karachi in the same year.
Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna remarked about the drama by Juyal,” The dialogues, language and screenplay are marvelous in this social drama- Parivartan”.  The dialogues are mixture of Hindi and Garhwali and are the source of bringing involvement of the audience.
The following is an example of dialogues in the drama Parivartan by Ishwari Datt Juyal –
A-Mausa Ji! Hamku ayan bhaut din huya hain. Tu to badaa aadim hai hamkun thai milne ko bhi nai ayaa
B- Aajkal bhai Ji Karachi ma fukafat machyan hai
Garhwali literature creator Hari Datt Bhatt appreciated the sharpness of language. The play shows that past and present are wound around each other.
The story is about the migrated Garhwalis and Garhwali village. Due to migration, the changes were taking place in Garhwal not only in physical dimensions but in the thought processes of migrated Garhwalis and Garhwalis in the village too. The drama writer Ishwari Datt Juyal was able to show these changes and the struggle or conflicts happenings because of changes.
Ishwari Datt Juyal was able to mirror the society of his time in Parivartan drama.
Ishwari Datt Juyal wrote other Literature genre as Poetry in Garhwali and Hindi. However, while he was returning from Karachi he lost all his writings. After independence, Juyal had to shift to Saharanpur.
Ishwari Datt Juyal expired on 18th April 1969 in Saharanpur.
Ishwari Datt Juyal is always remembered for social dramas in Garhwali Dramas. The critics place Ishwari Datt Juyal as playwright as they place Diane Samuels;  Chayale Ash in world theatre.

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -616
By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Gurkha /Gorkha Administration disregarded the scholars of Garhwal and did not offer shelters any type of scholars.
However, creative scholars were busy in creating literature of different kinds by their own.
One of prominent scholars was Braj Long Poetry Poet Vishnudas. Barrister Mukandilal brought Braj Poet Vishnudas of Garhwal in lime light. The manuscript of Long Braj Poetry ‘Rukmani Mangal ‘ by  Poet Vishnu Das was found with the manuscripts of Maularam with heirs of Maularam. The drawing artists as Maularam drew arts on the basis of poetries by Vishnudas in ‘Rukmani Mangal’. That is why historians as Dr S.P Dabral state that Braj Poet Vishnudas was contemporary to Maularam.
Vishnudas was great Braj poet but could not get fame as Gorkha Administrators were not interested at all for offering situation to Literature Creators and Scholars becoming Famous in Garhwal and out of Garhwal.
The emotions, the raptures, the style of Long Braj Poetry of ‘Rukmani Mangal’ are remarkable and prove that Vishnudas was one of great Braj Language Poets.
Mukandilal got the part of ‘Rukmani Mangal’ manuscript from cosine of Balakram (heir of Maularam) of Shrinagar. Barrister Mukandilal handed over the manuscript to Dr Joshi the director of Lucknow Museum. However, now, nobody knows whereabouts of that valuable manuscript.

*Dr Dabral had offered chronological accounts of various manuscripts of Maularam including Vishnudas in Memorial book on Mukandilal edited by Bhaktdarshan.
