Uttrakhand CM takes holy dip at Mauni Amavasya
« Reply #64 on: January 16, 2010, 11:11:47 AM »
Haridwar: Aficionado over the holiness of the Mauni Amavasya has forced the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, who drove at 0400 am to take holy dip in the Ganga River.

Without any security brigade and hooter, he went with his wife Kusumkanta Pokhriyal and performed all the rituals at the VIP gate of Ganga ghat. The sources revealed that he spent more than one hour at ghat. Before getting back to the state capital, he reviewed the arrangements for the kumbhmela at the ghat.

After show in sky, a human tsunami at Mahakumbh

HARDWAR: It was a surging human wave after the meditative wait. The end of eclipse hours on Friday a little after 3.30pm galvanized lakhs to go for  the second important Mahakumbh bath: the amavasya snan. Even the security men, who too had fallen into a quiet dutiful slumber, seemed overwhelmed by the onslaught of bathers at the ghat, post-eclipse.

The solar eclipse in the Kumbh period holds deep significance. “Any good deed during those hours has a multiplier effect and is ideal for meditation and charity,” said Mahant Gyandev Singh, head of the Nirmala akhara, the youngest akhara with a 200-year history, who are followers of Guru Nanak. The coincidence of amavasya, or the new moon following the eclipse and Kumbh’s scheduled dip made the bath special. For the sadhus, the day was spent in prayer and havan.

Early morning, Uttarakhand CM Ramesh Pokhariyal ‘Nishank’ made it to Har ki Paudi for a dip at the Brahmakund with no security. He took the opportunity to check out the arrangements as well.

From the morning itself, ghats were choc-a-bloc, wearing a religious-picnic look. Families spread sheets to wait out the eclipse. Packed to the steps, most were meditating, reading holy books. A zealous few even went knee-high into the water to read the Gita despite chattering teeth. There were very few announcements and music was low. None ate. In fact, kitchens in every little shop, the famous Chotiwala downwards - normally the hub of gorging with abandon - were closed, workers waiting. “Shaam ko jalwa hoga,” grinned a teen help at one of the restaurants.

Elsewhere, sadhus dispensed free wisdom to small groups of people. Ganja joints did the rounds among the matted genteel. Quasi-pandits, in white, long-bearded and turbaned weaved their way through the crowds asking for donation of grain and clothes. “Grahan ka daan,” was the only audible hum. Touristy Kumbhites simply hung around, finding comfortable spots in the pandits’ kiosks that line the main ghat.

During eclipse hours, bathing was a strict no-no. While gentle announcements shooing junta out of the water had lakhs squat on the ghats, a couple of hundred believed in making most of the empty waters, egging the announcer at the Police Control Centre to admonish: “Har ki Pauri mein taerna mana hai.” (No swimming please.)

The temples were kept closed during the eclipse, apparently to ward off the ‘negative energies’.

It was not only the devotees who were here. Apart from being the holiest congregation, Kumbh is also the time for some much-needed fund raising for the individual saints and babas who belong to no organization. “I will tell you the truth, ma,” said a dishevelled holy man with bright dirty eyes, who called himself Acharya Srimat Swami Taramrita Shivacharya Paramhansa from Kolkata. “I don’t ask, but people give dakshina here,” he said. There’s three months of high days ahead. It’s India on ritual.
