HARSHIL
=======
The original name of the place was Hari-shila. In ancient times, it was terrorised by a rakshas (ogre), Jalandhar, who was granted eternal life till his wife remained pure. Fearing for their lives, its residents petitioned Vishnu to come to their aid. Vishnu assumed the form of Jalandhar, and thus deceived his wife into having connubial relations with him. The boon of eternal life ended with her becoming impure, and Jalandhar was killed by Vishnu. Jalandhar's wife, however, cursed Vishnu for deceiving her, and transformed him into stone, the 'Hari-shila'. Since the entire region is believed to be 'the playground of the Gods', it has led to the saying, Jitne Kankar, Utne Shankar.' The point to note however is that religious myths and legends are not of mere academic interest to the local populace. It is part and parcel of their lifestyle, and shapes their way of thinking. Thus, Parshuram's example of filial obedience, Bhagirath's monumental patience and sage Asit's devotion have become an integral part of their faith. And it is this faith that moves mountains.
