Darma Valley

Darma valley is a Himalayan valley situated in the Pithoragarh District of Uttarakhand state of India. This valley is located in the eastern part of Uttarakhand. The Darma or darma ganga valley is formed by the Darma River or Darmaganga. The valley is situated between two other valleys-Kuthi Yangti valley to the east and Lassar Yankti valley in the west. The Darma valley links with the Lassar valley by Gangachal Dhura and connects with Kuthi valley by Sinla pass and Nama pass. This valley is inhabited by the Bhotiya-Rung tribe, who have been livestock rearers and traders. Darma valley starts near Dawe village on the India-China border and flows southwards. At Tidang it joins the Lassar Yankti and is called Dhauli Ganga until it confluences in the river Kali at Tawaghat. Darma valley has rich flora including orchids. A rivulet called Nyuli Yangthi that drains Panchachuli east glaciers flows into Dhauli ganga at Dugtu-Dantu villages. Mandab river joins Dhauli at Sela.

Mountaineering and Trekking
Trekking in the Darma valley region was formerly restricted by India's. Trekking without "inner-line" permits is currently (as of 2002) allowed to Panch Chuli base or Meola glacier. Additional permits may be required for other areas. For Trekking: Permits for Indian citizens can be obtained from SDM Dharchula or DM Pithoragarh. They need to carry their identity proof. For foreigners, the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi will issue Inner line permits up to Bidang to cross into Kuti valley over Sin la. Beyond Bidang and towards Dawe it's strictly off limits for foreigners as the area has a 'sensitive' border with Tibet.

How to reach
Pithoragarh-Dharchula-Tawaghat-Sobla (last bus terminus) - Dhar - Bongling - sela - Nangling - Baling - Dugtu - Dantu - Tidang - Bidang - Dawe

Valley of Flowers National Park

Valley of Flowers

Valley of Flowers National Park is an Indian national park in the Himalayan area in Uttarakhand, India. Together with Nanda Devi National Park, it forms part of the Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks World Heritage Site. The park stretches over an expanse of 87.50 km².

The Valley of Flowers was declared a national park in 1982. This part of Uttarakhand, in the upper reaches of Garhwal, is inaccessible through much of the year. The area lies on the Zaskar range of the Himalayas with the highest point in the national park being Gauri Parbat at 6,719 m above sea

History
In 1931 the English mountaineer Frank Smythe stumbled across the Bhyundar Valley, an 8 km long glacier corridor in Chamoli Garhwal. This area, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and carpeted with over 500 species of flowers, soon became a protected site.

Kalabaland Glacier

Kalabaland Glacier of Himalaya is situated in the eastern Kumaun of the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state of India. Kalabaland is situated to the north of the Milam valley and to the west of the Darma valley. This glacier is aligned at northwest to southeast direction and lies above the Yankcharand Sankalp glaciers. This glacier is rare in the fact that it joins Yankchar glacier to form Sankalp glacier. It is a massive mixed glacial system of Kalabaland-Burfu Kalganga glacier. The length of the glacier is 15 km. A number of peaks completely covers Kalabaland glacier are Bamba Dhura 6,334 m, Chiring We 6,559 m, Suli Top 6,300 m, Trigal 5,983 m, Burphu Dhura 6,144 m, Suitilla 6,373 m and Kalabaland Dhura 6,105 m. Kalabaland Glacier is nestled by the horseshoe-shaped Himalayan massif separating Goriganga and Lassar Yankti valley and lies to a little east of the Milam Glacier. Ralam gad river originates from glaciers of Kalabaland, Yangchar and Sankalp. Ralam gad merges with Goriganga river. The trek to the glacier is through : Munsiyari–Lilum–Pilthi–Sapodair–Ralam–Sankalpa Glacier–Kalabaland Glacier.

This pass was the part of ancient trade route of Bhotiyas to Tibet. The route is under heavy blanket of snow all year round.

Trek
