Swargarohini

Swargarohini is a mountain massif in the Bandarpunch Range of the Garhwal Himalaya. It lies in the Uttarkashi District of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, west of the Gangotri group of peaks. It comprises four separate peaks; Swargarohini I is the main peak, and is the subject of this article. While not particularly high by Himalayan standards, and not the highest in the Bandarpunch range, Swargarohini I is notable for its dramatic local relief. For example, its north face drops 2,000 m (6,560 ft) in under 2 km (1.2 mi) of horizontal distance, and its south face achieves the same drop in under 3 km (1.9 mi). This makes it a steep and challenging climb. Swargarohini I has two summits, east and west. The east summit is given an elevation of 6,247 m (20,495 ft), slightly lower than the west summit. However the first ascensionists of the west summit claim that that summit is the higher of the two.[2]

Climbing history

Swargarohini I has seen many climbing attempts. As of 1994, fifteen attempts had been made.[3] On October 25, 1974, Charles Clarke (England); Dilsher Singh Virk, Peter Fuhrman and Bruce MacKinnon (Canada); and Mohan Singh and Rattan Singh (India) made the first ascent of the west summit of Swargarohini I, ascending from the west side.[2]

The first ascent came on May 3, 1990, by a team of instructors from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. They climbed from the Ruinsara Valley on the north side, via the eastern col connecting the peak to the rest of the range, and found challenging rock climbing to achieve the col, leading to easier snow slopes above.[4] However, other sources claim that this ascent stopped (5 m (16 ft)) short of the summit due to the presence of an unstable cornice.[3]

The south face of the peak was attempted unsuccessfully in 1991.[5] On June 7, 1994, an expedition from Sweden made the first undisputed ascent of the peak via this face. The summit team comprised Birger Andrén, Igela Nilsson, and Ake Nilsson. They ascended a rock ridge on the eastern side of the south face, leading to the easy east-southeast ridge.[3]

Thalay Sagar

Thalay Sagar is a mountain in the Gangotri Group of peaks in the western Garhwal Himalaya, on the main ridge that lies south of the Gangotri Glacier. It lies in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, 10 km (6 mi) southwest of the Hindu holy site of Gaumukh (the source of the Bhagirathi River). It is the second highest peak on the south side of the Gangotri Glacier (after Kedarnath), but it is more notable for being a dramatic rock peak, steep on all sides, and a famed prize for mountaineers. It is adjacent to the Jogen group of peaks, and has the lake Kedar Tal at its base.

Climbing history
The obvious difficulty presented by Thalay Sagar's consistently steep profile prevented any attempts at climbing the peak until the late 1970s, when hard technical rock climbing began to be practiced at high altitude. Unusually for such a hard peak, the first attempt was actually successful. It was first climbed on June 24, 1979 via the northwest couloir and ridge, by an Anglo-American team comprising Roy Kligfield, John Thackray, and Pete Thexton.[3]

Since the first ascent, many other routes have been climbed on the peak, some of which have been testpieces of modern mountaineering. There have been at least 15 ascents[4] by at least 9 different routes. The north face of the peak, in particular, has been climbed by 5 different routes, some more direct than others. The key difficulty in the direct routes is a notorious band of shale near the summit, which presents rotten and dangerous rock. The first route to climb directly through the shale band, instead of finishing on one of the ridges, was the Australian Route done by Andrew Lindblade and Athol Whimp; it involves 1,400 m (4,600 ft) of climbing and is graded VII 5.9 WI5.[5] Their climb was awarded the Piolet d'Or in 1998.

Kafni Glacier: Situated on the right hand side of Pindari Glacier and located at a distance of 11 kilometres from Dwali Halt, is Kafni Glacier. Five kilometres after Dwali is Khatia, a beautiful place. It also has a building constructed by the village panchayat which provides the visitors with the option of spending night. Six kilometres from Khatia is the beautiful Kafni Glacier. The place is 3860 metres above sea level. Some of the visitors also spend night in the caves here. Majority however, prefer to visit the place and return the same way. Very close to Kafni is the origin of Saryu ‘Sarmul’.

Oct 23, 02:24 am

Peora

Peora, Mukteshwar is one of the finest destinations for eco tourism situated in the cradle of the mighty Himalayas in India. The geographical location of Peora is in the Kumaon region of Uttaranchal – the hill state of north India. It is located in the district of Nainital and is close to the city of Mukteshwar (10km) and Almora (23km). Peora with its picturesque backdrop is cradled in the outer Himalayan Shivalic ranges of Kumaon. It can be best described as a small hamlet situated at a height 6600ft/1997mt. with it’s off beat characteristic, draped with the thick blanket of natural vegetation of mainly pine and oak. This place offers visitors the uninterrupted view of over 350km span of high snow capped Himalayan terrain a very unique experience for the hungry eyes.
