Sherwood College Nainital

Sherwood College is a boarding school, established by the British in India in 1869 to educate British boys and the Indian elite during the Raj. Today it is co-educational boarding school, with a smattering of girls to even things out.

It is located on Ayarpatta Hill in Nainital, Uttarakhand, nestled between the hills bordering the reserve forest and the Governor's golf links.

One of India's leading public schools, it offers an all-round education to children of well-off parents who choose to send their children to boarding school. Quite often the parents are Old Sherwoodians themselves.

The school follows the ICSE system, and the school year runs from early March to early December with a 3 week summer break in June after Founders' Week (30th May-5th June).

At Sherwood, emphasis has always been placed on an all-round education, which means that apart from academics, it is mandatory for all students to participate in sports and extra-curricular cultural activities, such as theatre, music (both Indian and Western), fine arts, elocution, debating, and bi-annual group excursions out of town, etc.

Sherwood has long been known for the high quality of its football and cricket teams. The school is equipped with tennis, basketball, squash, and indoor badminton courts, as well as a swimming pool (dug by the students themselves in 1954!) and a large playground that doubles as sports field and venue for the annual school fête - much looked forward to by all!

The chapel (dedicated to Saint Barnabas) is situated on the front 'quad' or quadrangle, which faces an extraordinary panorama of the Kumaon hills descending into the terai (the plains).

The School Song:

O Sherwood fair to thee we sing/ Our song of ardent praise/ May all the hills with echoes ring/ Until the end of days /

May Sherwood’s spirit stronger grow/ With each day’s rising sun/ May Sherwood’s flag victorious flow/ When each day’s battle’s done/

The days we spent within thy walls/ Our hearts with memories fill / And when we’re gone where duty calls / Those thoughts will linger still/

O Happy days of sterling worth/ May we thy greatness see/ The greatest days we have on earth/ O Sherwood are with thee/

O Evening star from out the deep/ Shine down upon us here/ Watch oe’r us while in peace se sleep/ Let Sherwood without fear/

And when the morning light breaks forth/ Ye sons of Sherwood rise/ And strive that Sherwood’s name and worth/ May mount unto the skies!

The School Colours
Sherwood was named after the Sherwood Rangers and the school flag borrowed from their colours - bottle green, maroon and silver. The houses are Allen-a-Dale or AD (Red) , Robin Hood RH(Green), Friar Tuck FT(Blue) and Little John LJ (Yellow), named after Robin Hood and his Merry Men.

Principals
Sherwood has had 13 principals in its 135+ years of establishment. Some notable names are -Mr. D.R.A. Mountford (1973-2003) -Rev. R.C. Llewelyn (1951-1966) -Rev. A. Binns (1932-1947) -Mr. C.H. Dixon(1907-1932)

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is located in Roorkee, a township in Uttarakhand, India. Instituted as Thomason college of Civil Engineering in year 1847 by British, it was rechristened as University of Roorkee in year 1949.[1] The Thomason college of Civil Engineering was the first engineering university of independent India.

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
The oldest institute of technical education in India, IIT Roorkee celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th year) anniversary in October 1996. On September 21, 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The ordinance was converted into an act by the Parliament to make IIT Roorkee an "Institution of National Importance".[2]

IIT Roorkee main buildingRoorkee offers Bachelor's degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and Planning. IIT Roorkee also started Dual Degree Programs (B.Tech+M.Tech) in 2003.[3] Presently these programs are offered in three Engineering disciplines. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all departments and research centers.

Along with the engineering courses, IIT Roorkee also offers a 2 year residential MBA program. The Department of Management Studies also offers PhD in various disciplines. Admission for these courses are through JMET, a centralized entrance examination for the MBA programs at various IITs.

IIT Roorkee is also running a MCA programme. Typically, the MCA is a 3 year fulltime degree course consisting of six semesters. It covers various aspects of computing, accounting, finance, programming, design and managing networks and databases. Admission for this course is through JAM(joint admission test), a centralized examination fot two-year MSc programmes at all IITs, Three-year MCA and M Tech in Applied Geology/ Applied Geophysics at IIT Roorkee, MSc-PhD Dual Degree in Physics at IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur.

Prior to being converted into an IIT, the University selected students through an entrance exam, REE (Roorkee Entrance Exam) conducted on an All-India level. The selectivity of REE was close to 2%.[citation needed] The Institute continues the legacy by admitting students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centers all over India. The Institute is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia exchanging students and senior scholars.

[edit] Heritage
The College was established in year 1847 as the first engineering college in the British Empire.[4] The College was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It was given the status of University by Act No. IX of 1948 of the United Province (Uttar Pradesh) in recognition of its performance, potential and keeping in view the needs of post-independent India. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949, elevating the erstwhile college to the First Engineering University of Independent India.[5]

Since its establishment, the University has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower, know-how and pursuit of research to the country. It ranks among the top technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. Before becoming an IIT, University of Roorkee was ranked 14th best in Asia by Asiaweek in 2000 (Behind only the IITs among Indian Universities and Institutes).[6]

The Gurukul Kangri University is a Deemed University located in the city of Haridwar in the Indian province of Uttarakhand.

History

The Institution was founded in 1902 by Swami Shraddhananda (1856-1926), a member of the Arya Samaj, with the aim of reviving the ancient Hindu educational system of residential schools or gurukuls imparting esoteric knowledge under the direct guidance of a guru or adept as an alternative to the Western-oriented system of Education imposed on India by Lord Macaulay. The institution is located at the village of Baradabad on the outskirts of the ancient Hindu pilgrimage city of Haridwar, presently a part of Uttarakhand. The impetus for the foundation was found in the teachings and activities of Dayananda Saraswati, founder of the Arya Samaj. In 1922, a sister-institution, the Kanya Gurukul Mahavidyalaya, was founded at Dehradun to cater to the needs of girls. Presently, the Kanya Gurukul has a campus alongside the Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar. In 1993, the Governmental University Grants Commission granted the Gurukul the status of a Deemed University. As a result, the institution now is legally styled as a Mahavidyalaya (university) rather than a Vidyalaya (school). The present Vice-Chancellor, the person who actively governs a university in India, is Prof. Swatantra Kumar. Among its alumni is the late Rama P. Coomaraswamy, third son of the Indologist Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy.
