सामन्य अंग्रेजी नाम - Safed Musli, Safed Moosli
संस्कृत नाम -मुशाली:
हिंदी नाम -सफेद मूसली
नेपाली नाम -मूसली
उत्तराखंडी नाम -मूसली
 उत्तराखंड में पहाड़ों में व घाटियों में जंगलों में मिलता है और अब उगाया भी जाने लगा है।  डेढ़ फ़ीट ऊँचे पत्तीदार पौधे के ेजदें दस इंच गहरे भी जाती हैं।  फूल सफेद होते हैं।

------------औषधि -----------------
सफेद मूसली की जड़ों के सत का प्रयोग यौन शक्ति वृद्धि , बांझपन दूर करने , सम्भोग शक्ति वृद्धि के अतिरिक्त  अन्य पौधों के आठ मिलाकर 100  से अधिक आयुर्वेदिक दवाई निर्माण में प्रयोग होता है।
 ------------------ धार्मिक महत्व ----------
राहु ग्रह  शांति में , देवी पूजन व नेपाली समाज में कुछ उतसवो में मूसली का प्रयोग होता है।
----------- पत्तियों की सब्जी -------
उत्तराखंड में भी अन्य स्थानों की तरह दवाई में प्रयोग होता है किन्तु पहले अकाल व सब्जी की कमी के समय पत्तियों की सब्जी बनाई जाती थी।  अब भी कभी कभी सब्जी बनाई जाती है।
 सब्जी बनाने के लिए पहले पत्तियों को उबाल लेते  निथार कर अलग रख दिया जाता है।

फिर कढ़ाई में तेल गरम कर प्याज , अदरक, जीरा , जख्या को भूरे होने तक भूना जाता है।  फिर उबली पत्तियों को कम मिश्रित  मसाले व नमक के साथ 5 मिनट तक पकाते हैं।  भीगी दाल जैसे चना व गहथ के साथ भी  सब्जी बनाई जा सकती है . फाणु, कपिलु हेतु भी मूसली पत्तियां प्रयोग की जा सकती है किन्तु शक्ति वर्धक दवाई होने के कारण लोग सब्जी कम ही प्रयोग करते हैं .

 भरंगी की झाडी 1. 8 मित्र ऊंची हो सकती हैं। डंठल जोड़ में पत्तियां गुच्छे में पायी जाती हैं और फूल सफेद , नीले व बैंगनी रंग के होते हैं।
जन्मस्थल संबंधी सूचना - पूर्वी भारत व श्रीलंका को भरंगी  का जन्मस्थल माना जाता है।
संदर्भ पुस्तकों में वर्णन -
भरंगी का वर्णन धन्वन्तरी निघण्टु (ग्यारहवीं सदी से पहले ),कैयदेव निघण्टु , शो निघण्टु , रा निघण्टु , भाव प्रकाश निघंटु में उल्लेख हुआ है।
  ----औषधीय उपयोग ---
  भारत,  श्रीलंका में भरंगी का उपयोग सब्जी हेतु कम दवा हेतु अधिक होता है और आयुर्वेद में भरंगी का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है। भरंगी से बनाई गयी दवाइयां स्वास रोग , कफ , बुखार ,पेट दर्द ,क्षय रोग निवारण हेतु जले  व  घाव पर लगाए जाती हैं। सर्प दंश में भी उपयोग होता है।
       ---भरंगी की सब्जी ----
भरंगी की पत्तियों से सब्जी बनाई जा सकती है किन्तु टॉक्सिक भय से बहुत काम उपयोग होता है।  आज तो सुनने में नहीं आता है।  भरंगी की हरी सब्जी अकाल या हीन समय में प्रयोग होता था।
 हरी पत्तियों को धोकर उबाला जाता है (जिससे कडुवापन कम हो जाय ) . फिर कढ़ाई में तेल, जख्या , जीरा , अदरक , लहसुन , प्याज को छौंका जाता है , फिर टमाटर के साथ भूना  जाता है , फिर नमक ,मिर्च हल्दी ,धनिया ,  भांग का मसाले डाले जाते हैं व् कुछ देर पकाते हैं।  अब भरंगी के उबले पत्तियों को कढ़ाई में डालकर 5 मिनट तक पकाया जाता है।  गरमागरम परोसा जाता है , वैसे अरहर , चना दाल , मटर के साथ  भी पकाई जाती है।  भीगी दालें , गहथ , राजमा ,चना ,  सूंट के साथ भरंगी की पत्तियों का सूखा साग बनाया जाता है। बिना उबाले भी पालक जैसे सब्जी भी बनाई जाती है।

Common English name –Halfa Grass
Botanical name –Desmostachya bipinnata
Local name –Kusha or Kansilu
Hindi Name – Kusha
Sanskrit Name –Darbha, Darbhah
Economic benefits –it was used as folk medicine and medical uses in dysentery, menorrhagia. Is used as fodder 
                   Myths, Religious Importance and Traditions
  There are mentions of Kusha ,  Halfa Grass/ Kush in Rig Veda, Mahabharata and Buddhist literature as sacred plant. In Rig Veda, it is mentioned that in special ceremony, priests and scholars use Kusha seat. In Bhagvat Geeta , Krihna advices for Kusha seat for mediation. Early Buddha accounts also mention that Buddha used Kusha Asan or Kusha seat for meditation (3).
 Kusha pen was supposed to be auspicious pen for writing on leaves
    Still, many mediators use Kusha Asan / Halfa Grass seat for meditation.
           Uses of Kusha /Halfa Gras in Various Shradha Tarpan  (tribute to forefathers) etc
  Priests use Kusha , Halfa Grass in various Shradha rituals as follows –
1-Darbha or Kusha Chat – 10 numbers each of five inch wide bundled in 10 tags
2- 3 Kusha of 8 inches each bundled by ‘klava’ for Tarpan
4- 3 Kusha of 8 inches each for base for Pind
5- Kusha ring used at Tarpan processes
6- One Tied Kusha for Marjan ritual
7- 15 Kusha of 3 inches for putting/using at various times and places.

  Kusha as Blessing Medium
 Priests use Kusha for blessing the jajman too by putting Kusha Grass on Jajman’s heads

Local Name – Dhak, Dhank
Hindi Name – Palash , Tesu, Tensu
Sanskrit Name – Kimshuka

Medical uses- Dhak is used for removing skin, cough, cold, stomach, worm, leprosy , dysentery etc.
Furniture, Agriculture Instruments, wood etc and for making coal, roots are used for rope materials and leaves container
Decoration – For color
                   Myths, Religious Importance and Traditions
    The three united leaves of Dhak are considered Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver) and Shiva (Destroyer) .
People believe that Palash, Dhak is the form of Agni (Fire). In a Purana story, parvati cursed deities for taking birth in tree form and Agni took birth in the form of Palash .
     In Grihvasutra, it is advised to use Dhak stick for Brahmin young man in Yagyopavit (thread ceremony) ritual.
 In Shrotra Sruti, there are many methods for making Dhak, Palash wood as ‘samidha’  for various Yagya, homa.
 In  Vayu Puran, using Dhak wood for Homa or Yagya is called auspicious.
In Indian Hindu astrology, Budh grah is the master of Dhak. Surya is also connected with Dhak 
 Palash, Dhak is also an auspicious tree for Buddhist as second Buddha got gyan (Enlightenment)  under this tree.
 In Mahabharata, the Dhak, plash is narrated in Aranyaka parva  when Pandavas travel to Garhwal for vanvas 
 Dhak leaves are also used for blessing rituals or ceremonies.
 Learned people suggest for rooting Dhak tree on est south of village.
 People offered Dhlk flower to Devi.
      Auspicious Importance in Holi Festival
   In Uttarakhand, playing Holi with Palas color is very auspicious important aspect of Holi celebration.
                    Palash in Astrology
 Purva Falguni Nakshatra is related to Palash and astrologers use Kadamb for person effected by Poorva Falguni Nakshatra.    
                    Palash in Tantric –Mantric Rituals
  People use Palash , Dhak (White flower is supposed to be best) in Tantric Vshikran and Smridhi rituals.
  There is importance of Dhak, Palash in Shankaracharji Mantra too.
 There is uses of Palash in Damar Tantra डामर तंत्र
As per Uddamareshwar Tantra, Palsh is offered to please Kalkarni Yakshani.

  It was believed that  bamboo flower after twelve years gap and flower together. In past, there was a myth that the year of bamboo flowering meant plague was on the way.
               ------------------Uses in Funeral Ceremony -------------
   Bamboo logs are compulsory used in carrying dead body to crematorium even on motor or ambulance.
  The fire (burning uple, dry cow dung) container is always put on triangle base made by bamboo.
 Bamboo log used for carrying dead body is never burnt but thrown out. Bamboo burning is perceived calling forefather’s cursing (Pitri Dosh)

   Safed Musli/Moosli/Musali is used in Rahu Shanti Rituals.  Astrologers advice that the effected person by Rahu Grah should take bath with  mixer of Bala, Kuth, Nagmotha, Sarson, Laja, Lodh Devdar and Musli for eight Tuesday for downing or ending the Rahu’s negative effects.
  Karmkandi Pundit also use Musli in Devi Pujan.

वनस्पति शास्त्रीय नाम - Smilax aspera
सामन्य अंग्रेजी नाम - Smilax, Prickly Ivy
संस्कृत नाम -छोपछीनि , द्वीपांतरा
हिंदी नाम -कुकुरदार
छोपछीनी /कुकरदार  लतानुमा पौधा है जो पेड़ों पर चढ़कर 45 मीटर तक लम्बी लता रूप ले लेता है। छोपछीनी /कुकरदार  के पत्ते गदगदे व हृदय शक्ल के होते हैं। सफ़ेद फूल वाले छोपछीनी /कुकरदार के फल पककर लाल व सुखकर भूरे या काले हो जाते हैं। छोपछीनी /कुकरदार हिमालय में 1200 -2500 मीटर की ऊंचाई में पाए जाते हैं।

संदर्भ पुस्तकों में वर्णन - भावप्रकाश निघण्टु में द्वीपांतरा नाम से उल्लेख हुआ है।
 
     --- औषधीय उपयोग ---
छोपछीनी /कुकरदार का मुख्य उपयोग औषधि हेतु होता आया है।  छोपछीनी /कुकरदार के विभिन्न भागों का उपयोग , सिफिलिस , साजोफेनिया, पेट दर्द ,  बबासीर , नपुंसकता जैसी बीमारियां दूर करने हेतु होता है।
       -----  भोज्य पदार्थ उपयोग ---
  छोपछीनी /कुकरदार के  कच्चे डंठल  की कलियों से हरी सब्जी बनाई जाती है जैसे एस्पेरेगस की सब्जी बनाई जाती है।   छोपछीनी /कुकरदारके कंद को किसी तरीदार सब्जी में भी डाला जा सकता है।  किन्तु मुख्यतया  छोपछीनी /कुकरदारडंठल कली की सब्जी या कंद का सब्जी में उपयोग वास्तव में वैद्यों के परामर्श से ही उपयोग किया जाता है।  जब अकाल या कम सब्जी का समय हो तो  छोपछीनी /कुकरदारके क्लीनुमा डंठलों की सब्जी बनाई जाती है।

नेपाली नाम - बराली कुंद
उत्तराखंडी नाम - सिरळ
 सिरळ एक लतावान , झाडी नुमा झाडी है जिसके पत्तियां 10 से 15 सेंटीमीटर लम्बी होती हैं। सिरळ  के  कंद उपयोग औषधि व सब्जी बनाने हेतु होता है। 
जन्मस्थल संबंधी सूचना - सिरळ का जन्मस्थल हिमालय ही है , चीन में भी पाया जाता है। विंग मिंग केयुंग  की पुस्तक  Pueraria the genus में इस प्रजाति के कई स्पेसीज व  इस जिनस का कृषिकरण होने  और फिर कृषिकरण से प्रजाति वन वनस्पति में तब्दील होने का वर्णन है इस पुस्तक में इस कंद के कई उपयोग व परीक्षओं का भरपूर वर्णन भी है। वास्तव में सिरळ  एक खर पतवार है और जब भी खेती उगाई गयी तब तब इस वनस्पति ने अन्य खेती को नुक्सान पंहुचाना शुरु  कर दिया था।

संदर्भ पुस्तकों में वर्णन - विदारी कंद का उल्लेख सुश्रुता संहिता , भावप्रकाश निघंटु , धन्वन्तरि निघण्टु , कैव्य देवा निघण्टु व राज निघण्टु में हुआ है।
औषधीय उपयोग -सिरळ  कंद का अलग या अन्य हर्ब्स में मिश्रण से बुखार , जोड़ों के दर्द जय बीमारी निवारण हेतु व स्त्रियों में दूध बढ़ाने , वीर्य वर्धन , मांस वृद्धि व त्वचा असुन्दरी हेतु उपयोग होता है।

      -सिरळ  की सब्जी -
सिरळ  कंद से सब्जी वैसे ही बनाई जाती है जैसे पिंडाळू , आलू से बनाई जाती है।  इसको उबालकर नमक मिलाकर भी सलाद रूप में खाया जाता था।  अब लगता नहीं सिरळ खाया जाता है।  इसकी जड़ें बहुत मंहगी बिकती है

  Mahabharata and Lord Shiva influenced the most Uttarakhand in terms of religious rituals, culture and society.
   There are following important plants for worshipping or performing Lord Shiva Rituals.-
                     Bel or Wood Apple

Botanical name –Aegle marmelos correa
Local name – Bel
Hindi Name –Bel, Bael
Sanskrit Name –Vilva, Bilva
Economic benefits –Fruits are used for pickle and medical uses.

                   Myths, Religious Importance and Traditions
  Bel or Wood apple is a sacred tree. The three leaves together of Wood Apple or Vilva or Bel look like trident (Trishul ) the emblem of Lord Shiva.  It is belief that these three leaves represent Shiva for s ‘Creation’, Preservation’ and ‘Destruction’.  The three leaves of Bel or wood apple as Sin removers too. People pay tribute to Lord Shiva in his temple by offering Vilva/bel leaves as bilpatri/belpatri on Shiv Linga
 Shiva devotees worship bel tree in moths as Marshirsha and  Falgun. .
  In Banhadadharma Puran, the sacred tree came in existence from the cut breast of Lakshmi while she was worshiping Shiva.That is why bel fruit is called fruit of destiny.
 As Banhi Puran, Lakshmi was cow in a birth and from her dung, Bel tree was born.
 There are stories about bel related to Lord Rama too.
In Skand Puran, the tree merged from sweat from  Parvati forehaed.
        Likewise, there are many other region wise folk stories and stories of  legends connected with Bel tree in Shiv Puran, Garur Purans,.
  Ritual Performers use Bel wood for Homa or havan.
 There are more than 108 mantras for offering belpatra on Shiva Linga.

  Ak has white flowers with blueish color touch, Therefore, the Ak is connected with the blue throat of Lord Shiva by gulping and stopping poison at the time of Samudra Manthan or ocean Churning.

             Apart from Chandan wood being used in funeral, homa /yagya, in various social functions, making agarbattis; Hindus  paste Chandan paste to Shiva Linga in three lines, People also use Chandan paste on putting on forehead. It is believed that Lord Shiva is always in highly inflammable state and it is essential to paste Chandan paste on Shiv Linga for calming down Lord Shiva.

  People believe that Lord Shiva uses Bhang for anti-cold purpose. People also believe that Lord take hemp for lowering down his anger and for long meditation.
  On Shiv Ratri day, people take hemp juice (crushed seeds with milk and other spices).  People also take Bhang leaves Pakaude on that auspicious day.
