     महाभारत  महाकाव्य  में कई चरित्र उत्तराखंड भ्रमण करते हैं या उत्तराखंडी मैंदानों में पर्यटन करते हैं।
  भाभर अथवा हरिद्वार (गंगा द्वार ) व कण्वाश्रम के जंगलों में बेल , आंक , खैर , कैथ व धव /बाकली वनस्पति वर्णन है और ग्रीष्म ऋतू में जहां बलुई मिटटी होती है कंटीली झाड़ी उगती है।  (आदिपर्व) , मालनी तट पर तून का उल्लेख है (आदिपर्व ) . जहां नदियों में पानी नहीं सूखता वहां घनघोर वनों का उल्लेख मिलता है।
     निम्न वनस्पति का उल्लेख महाभारत में मिलता है ( डबराल )-

                    खाद्य फल देने वाली वनस्पति
     

  अम्बाड़ा , अंजीर , अनार , आम , आंवला , इंगुद , कैथ , खजूर (छाकळ ), गम्भीरी , जामुन , ताल , तिन्दुक , नारिकेल (?), नीम्बू , पिंडी , भेदा , बरगद , बदरी , बेर बेल , भिलावा , केला आदि।


                       खाद्य न देने वाले वृक्ष


अम्लबेल , अशोक , कदम्ब , करौंदा , तमाल , देवदार , पाकड़ , परावत , पिप्पल , पीपल , मुंजातक , लकुच , शाल , सरल , शीशम , क्षौद्र आदि


                 फूल वनस्पति


      अशोक , इंदीवर , कनेर , कुटज , कुरवल , कोविदार , चम्पा , तिलक ,पारिजात , पुन्नाग , बकुल , मंदार , शेम , . कमल की अनेक जातियों का वर्णन मिलता है। कीचकबेणु का वर्णन कई बार मिलता है। फूलों के वनों का भी वर्णन महाभाऱत में मिलता है।  इन्द्रकील वन में अर्जुन पर फूलों की वर्षा होती है।

        बुग्याळों को कुबेर बातिकाएँ कहा गया है जो कि ऊँची नीची भूमि क्षेत्र में फैला हुआ उल्लेखित है। बुग्यालों पर देवता , गंधर्व , अप्सरायेँ मुग्ध रहतीं थीं।  गंधमादन की बुग्याळें मनुष्य ही नहीं वायुयान के लिए भी अगम्य थीं।

         कुछ वृक्ष अति काल्पनिक है जैसे कदली फल जो ताड़ वृष से भी ऊँचे वर्णित हैं।

           

          मेडिकल टूरिज्म के बीज

  उपरोक्त अधिकांश वनस्पतियां औषधि  निर्माण में आज भी प्रयोग की जाती हैं और उनका उल्लेख का चरक संहिता , सुश्रुता संहिता या निघंटुओं में भी मिलता है।  चरक संहिता का संकलन 3000 साल पहले हुआ होगा।  किन्तु औषधि , विभिन्न अवयवों के अनुपातिक मिश्रण से औषधि निर्माण विधि , औषधि प्रयोग तो हजारों साल से चल रहा था और वह श्रुति संचार विधि से सुरक्षित व प्रचारित होता था। महाभारत में वर्णित उत्तराखंड में मिलने वाली वनस्पतियों के उल्लेख से साफ़ जाहिर है कि इन वनस्पतियों का उपयोग गैर उत्तराखंडी भी करते थे।  व इनसे उत्तराखंड में या बाहर औषधि भी निर्मित होती थी।  उत्तराखंड में ऋषियों के आश्रम होने से अनुमान लगाना मुश्किल नहीं कि ये विद्वान औषधि विज्ञानं पर भी अन्वेषण करते थे व श्रुति संस्कृति से औषधि विज्ञानं को प्रसारित करते थे व सुरक्षित भी रखते थे।

Medical uses- Various parts are used in manufacturing medicines for Constipation, lever diseases, bacterial diseases

Used as insecticides for killing leaches
Food Uses – Food and rearing for larvae of silkworm and muga
 Seeds are used for making beads of neckless
In old days, as lubricating oil for automobiles

          Castor uses for Pacifying, Pleasing  Shukra Graha

  Astrologers suggest using Castor (arandi) for rituals for pleasing or pacifying Shukra Graha.
  The roots are tied with other herbs in a very small white bag (emblem) and tied on upper  hands on Bharani nakshatra. Astrologers also suggest for castor oil  (emerged by putting castor seed dust on boiling water  ) on forehead by effected by Shukra
        Castor Use in Bhairav Tantra
    Tantrik suggest putting Poye (Puri cooked in mustard oil), Ak etc on leave plate of castor and put those on a crossroad on Saturday mid night for escaping bad luck.
       Bagai Dadi Regar Regar (De Sharpening of Tiger teeth) Ritual in Garhwal
       In old age, people used castor seeds for a ritual for protecting Tiger killing animals. People believed that the ritual de-sharpen the teeth of tigers. On Deepawali evening or on Tulsi Vivah evening (Igas), people used to put a couple of castor seeds and many times small stones and used to call “Bagai dadi regad , regad बागे  दाड़ी रेगड़, regad बागे  दाड़ी रेगड़
 Now that ritual performance is totally unseen in Garhwal.

Medical uses- Used for Truth brushing and tongue cleaning. In Siddha medicine system, Shisham is used for skin disorder, gonorrhea, boils and stomach disorder, piles. Medicines prepared by Shisham tree parts are also used in improving seminal weakness.  Root is used as astringent
 As pesticides – extract of fruits are used for killing snails etc.

As per Samarangana Sutradhara, the plant juice is potential for wall plasters
 Planted for shading around tea gardens
