We salute our Martyr Inspector Mohan Chandra Sharma!
The sacrifice of 43 year old Inspector Mohan Chandra cannot be forgotten especially by the people of Uttarakhand. The brave son of Uttarakhand lost his life while fighting terror. He succumbed to the bullet injuries during an encounter with dreaded terrorists. Mohan Chandra Sharma had settled at Delhi with his family. But his native place is Village Adigram Kanoniyan Timilkhal. The place is situated some 60 Kms. from Ranikhet and is hardly 2 Kms. from Masi (Chaukhutia). A pall of gloom enveloped the entire village when the heart burning news of the martyrdom of Inspector Sharma was received in the village. The villagers remembered that Inspector Sharma was in the village on 26 June, 2008 and stayed for five days with his family members He prayed at the local temple of his forefathers and offered a Ghanti (small bell) in the temple. He was in the hit list of the terrorists and this was the reason that he was escorted by the security personnel even in his village. His father Narottam Masiwal retired as Section Officer from the Audit Department and was living with him. He had four sisters, who are all married. Sharma was educated in Delhi. He had won many awards in the past and was known for his bravery. He was working with Special Branch of Delhi Police I also had an association with his village Adigram, where in 1977 I used to contact the people of Adigram Kanoniyan for declaring Adigram as a Bimagram of LIC.
Now that Inspector Sharma has become a martyr, it is our solemn duty to remember him. For the purpose the Government of Uttarakhand should erect a Memorial in his village, so that posterities may narrate the story of his bravery and may get encouragement to serve the country.
Inspector Sharma’s martyrdom apart, it is however intriguing to note that in this country of the apostle of Peace, Mahatma Gandhi, who propounded the theory of non-violence, the citizens of India have to live with terror now. It may be Mumbai, Delhi or Hyderabad; we are on the Hit List of the Terrorists. They can hit us anywhere any time. Not that India alone is facing terrorism, USA, England and other western countries are prone to terrorist attacks. Some blasts within a very short period have taken the toll many lives whereas many persons are injured in the blasts. Compensation is announced by the Government for the families of the dead and injured. Thus the story of yet another terrorist attack is forgotten. In fact people have already started leading a normal life at Delhi or elsewhere. After the blasts the question is what the alternative is? How the Government can deter the terrorists from embarking upon these heinous acts of terrorism, where innocent people’s life and liberty is at stake. Terrorism knows no religion, no caste or creed and rich and poor equally are prone to attacks. A powerful country like USA, which faced the 9/11 terrorists attacks, has not been able to deter the terrorists from embarking upon the path of terrorism. We can only hope and cherish that terrorist activity by various groups will, one day, come to an end, because this helps none, not even the terrorists. After all, the God created this beautiful world for all to live in peace. So we all should live in Peace.(By D.N.Barola)
