उत्तराखण्ड राज्य आन्दोलनकारियो में बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी का योगदान और उनका  बलिदान कभी भुलाया नहीं जा सकता है। बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी ने उत्तराखण्ड राज्य के निर्माण और उसके सरोकारों के लिये लम्बा संघर्ष किया और उनका संघर्ष उनकी शहादत के बाद ही समाप्त हुआ।

यह थ्रेड बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी के नाम है, हम इस अमर शहीद को नमन करते हैं।

  अमर शहीद- बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी

1949 में श्री मनबर सिंह रावत के घर में जन्मे श्री मोहन सिंह रावत को उत्तराखण्ड आन्दोलन में सक्रिय योगदान और संघर्षमय जीवन के  कारण उन्हें बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी कहा जाता था। वे जल, जंगल, जमीन और उत्तराखण्ड से संबंधित कई जनपक्षीय मुद्दों को लेकर जीवन भर संघर्षमय रहे। बाबा बचपन से ही संघर्षशील और जुझारु प्रवृत्ति के थे। वे पर्वतीय जनता के हितों के लिये सदैव ही चिंतित रहते थे। इण्टर तक की शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के बाद वे सेना में भर्ती हो गये थे। किंतु पर्वतीय जनता के जल, जंगल, जमीन के सवालों पर उद्वेलित होकर उन्होंने सेना की नौकरी छोड़ दी और पूरी तरह से समाजसेवा के लिये समर्पित हो गये। 1986 से 1991 तक वे ग्राम सभा बंठाली के ग्राम प्रधान रहे और इस पद पर रहते हुये उन्होंने जनसेवा और ईमानदारी की उत्कृष्ट मिसाल कायम की।
       अलग उत्तराखण्ड राज्य की प्राप्ति और गैरसैंण राजधानी को लेकर उन्होंने अपने जीवन काल में 13 बार आमरण अनशन किया। अंतिम बार जनपद चमोली के वेणीताल स्थित "टोपरी उडयार" पर गैरसैंण को स्थाई राजधानी बनाये जाने, स्थानीय युवाओं को रोजगार देने के लिये नीति बनाने और राज्य के समग्र विकास की मांग को लेकर उन्होंने 2 जुलाई, 2004 से अपना आमरण अनशन शुरु किया और अंततः 38 दिन के अनशन के बाद 8 अगस्त, 2004 को राज्य हित में अपने प्राणों का उत्सर्ग कर दिया।

Uttarakhand bandh today

DEHRA DUN, AUG. 9. Uttarakhand activists today called for a state-wide bandh tomorrow in protest against the death of Baba Mohan Uttarakhandi this morning, on the 38th day of his fast seeking establishment of a new Capital for Uttaranchal at Gairsen in Chamoli district instead of the present Capital of Dehra Dun.

A leading figure in the separate State movement, Baba Uttarakhandi was famous for his numerous fasts for the creation of the State.

A resident of Pauri district, he had been on fast since July 2 at Benital in Chamoli district demanding the early establishment of the Capital at Gairsen located at the centre of the State. The authorities shifted him to a hospital at Karnaprayag yesterday.

All shops and educational institutions in Karnaprayag and Kotdwar areas remained closed today to mourn his deathExpressing grief over the Baba's death, the Chief Minister, Narain Dutt Tiwari, announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakhs for his family.

Bandh in Uttaranchal over Baba Mohan’s death

DEHRA DUN, AUG 10 (PTI): Normal life was paralysed in several parts of Uttaranchal today as a spontaneous bandh was observed following the death of social activist Baba Mohan Uttarakhandi, who passed away yesterday after observing a record 37-day fast.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of Uttarakhandi were consigned to flames on the banks of Nayar river at his home town Satpuli in Pauri district. A large number of people gathered at the cremation ground and mourners shouted slogans like “Uttarakhandi amar rahe”.

The death of Baba Uttarakhandi on the 39the day of his fast has caused the issue of shifting the capital from Dehradun to Gairsain to resurface in the state. The opposition joined hands to make the statewide bandh over the issue effective today. With public outcry over the death of the fasting leader across the state and political protests hotting up, the government finds itself in a tight spot.

The Opposition, together with the organisations supporting the Uttarakhand movement, burnt effigies of Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari, blocked traffic and staged demonstrations at various places in Dehradun. Banks, government and non-governmental offices apart from business establishments and shops remained closed.

Social activist Brinda Karat said on behalf of the CPM that Baba’s death was a shocking example of arrogance of power shown by the government. The BJP is equally to blame for the public outcry because it was in its regime that Dehradun was made the capital and the state was named Uttaranchal.

The government, however, maintains that it had made efforts to convince the Baba to end his fast but he refused. Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari said the demand of Baba for declaring Benital as a tourist destination had been conceded but the issue of shifting the capital lay with the Virendra Dixit Commission. The commission was yet to submit its report on the appropriate permanent capital for the hill state, he said. Besides, the setting up the temporary capital at Dehradun was the Centre’s decision and it was not possible to change the capital overnight, Mr Tiwari said.

Expressing grief at on the death of the fasting sadhu, Mr Tiwari said an inquiry has been ordered. Meanwhile, the funeral of Baba Uttarakhandi, also called Mohan Baba, took place at Satpuli in Pauri district peacefully.

बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी निश्चित रुप से एक महान आन्दोलनकारी थे, उत्तराखण्ड राज्य प्राप्ति और उसकी राजधानी के लिये वे अपने जीवन में १३ बार अनशन पर बैठे और अंततः गैरसैंण को राजधानी बनाने की मांग को लेकर ८ अगस्त २००४ को ३९ दिन के आमरण अनशन के बाद उनकी मृत्यु हो गई।
     निश्चित रुप से वह हर उत्तराखण्डी के प्रेरणास्रोत हैं। हम उनका नमन करते हैं और संकल्प लेते हैं कि उनके द्वारा जलाई गई लौ को हम बुझने नहीं देंगे। गैरसैंण, उत्तराखण्ड की स्थाई राजधानी बने, वही बाबा मोहन उत्तराखण्डी को सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि होगी।
