History: First Attack by Gorkha Army on Kangra Fort

History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -54

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Grokha Army conquered Kangra valley by 1805 -06. According to Maularam, when Gorkha Chief Amar Singh Thapa freed Kutlaid, Suket, Mandi and other hill states from rule of Kangra Kingdom and defeated  Bushahr Kingdom army; the Kings of Guler and Chamba came to meet Amar Singh Thapa. Amar Singh reached to Jwalamukhi and offered tribute to Devi goddess there. All the kings with army and Gorkha army led by Amar Singh Thapa forwarded and surrounded Kangra Fort. The foreign armed forces as rohilas, Maratha etc in Kangra Army fled due to fear of Amar Singh Thapa.
Amar Singh Thapa surrounded Kangra Fort for three years. There was ample of food and other necessary materials in Kangra Fort that Sansar Chand did not need such items from outside of the Fort. When Amar Singh Thapa could not win kangra Fort the Gorkha army and other hill states army started looting nearby villages and oppressing them on daily basis. The families of kangra Kingdom started fleeing to other territories for saving them from oppression of Gorkha soldiers. Many families from villages fled to plains of Punjab and many to Chamba. There was nobody for farming and villages became barren land or waste land. The grass started growing in country yards of villages and wild animals started taking refuse in houses.
Secret Treaty of Amar Singh Thapa with Sansarchand
Maularam mentioned in Garhrajyvanshkavya that Sansarchand sent bribery money to Amar Singh that he should atc falsely the attack on kangra fort but should not use the real force. Amar Singh Thapa was pretending attack but was not real attack. Dr Dabral conclusively states that Amar Singh Thapa left many areas unprotected that Kangra King could get supply from outside of Kangra Fort and his family could have connections outside of Kangra Fort.

When Nain Singh Thapa died on second Gurkha/Gorkha attck on Kangra Fort, Amar Singh Thapa was afraid of his non winning tactics creating a bad name for him and a fear of being perceived as Gorkha/Gurkha Traitor.
Mar Singh increased his army actions. However, Nepal Court was not having confidence and faith on a legendary Amar Singh Thapa. Nepal Court dispatched a new ary led by Rudravir Chautariya and Dalarbhajan Pande for attacking on Kangra Fort. Rudravir started campaign journey from Shrinagar towards Kangra in 1806. The new army started attacking with force on kangra Fort. Kangra King Sansar Chand requested Ran Jit Singh for helping him from Gurkha/Gorkha attack. Sansar Chand agreed to pay 5000 rupees as tribute to Ranjit Singh fr the help. The Sikh King Ranjit Singh started to reach Kangra twice but both the time returned back from the way to Kangra. History: Another Treaty between Sansar Chand and Gurkha/Gorkha

History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -57

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -576

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Kangra King Sansar Chand fully understood that he was weak before Armies of Gurkha/Gorkha Commanders Rudravir and Dalbhanjan Pande. Kangra King Sansar Chand agreed to free the Kangra Fort for Gurkha/Gorkha. It was decided that Kangra King Sansar Chand would pay rupees five lakhs to Gurkha/Gorkha and Gurkha /Gorkha would let Sansar Chand go safely from Kangra Fort. Reper mentioned the tribute for rupees three lakhs .Kangra King agreed for an annual Tribute for Nepal Court.
Dalbhrajan Pande and Rudravir did not consult Amar Singh Thapa for that treaty with Kangra King. Repar mentioned that Amar Singh Thapa was from lower caste Khas and it was below dignity of Sansar Chand to have treaty with Amar Singh Thapa.
Sansar Chand had an understanding with Nepal court or with Rudravir Chautariya and Dalrbhajan  Pande that he would free the fort. Sansar Chand used to send unnecessary materials out of Fort and used to call necessary items into Fort and he was given chance to do so for before going out of the Fort. One day Sansar Chand fled with his family mebers as villagers from Kangra Fort to Teera Sujanpur. Sansar Chand handed over the Fort Protection to Commander Naurang.
According to Repar and Maularam, Amar Singh took the opportunity for criticizing Rudravir Chautariya and Pande. Amar Singh Thapa informed Nepal court that Chautariya and Pande took bribe from Sansar Chand and they offered chance to Sansar Chand for fleeing. He suggested Nepal court to call back Chautariya and Pande. Nepal Court called back Chautariya and Pande.
Nepal Court sent Parshuram in 1808, Bhairabbali in 1809 and Kunvar Veerbhadra in 1809 to Kangra.
Kunwar Virbhadra reached Shrinagar from Nepal on the way for Kangra. He was having order for Maularam for retaining of his position and property.
Afer return of Rudravir and Pande, Amar Singh Thapa decied to attack again on Kangra Fort.  Sikh King Ranjit Singh was also anxious to get Kangra under his rule. He had treaty with East India Company (a809, Amritsar Treaty). Ranjit Singh asked Company to his dispatch of Army towards in East Sutlej. The Company Army regional Commander Akhatarloni did not allow Ranjit Singh to do so. However, Governor General accepted the request of  Ranjit Singh for dispatching his army to east of Sutlej.
Now, Amar Singh was fearful from Ranjit Singh too. He postponed the attack on Kangra Fort. For many months, Gurkha/Gorkha had rule on  some of Kangra territories and Ranjit Singh had rule over some Kangra Territories.
Sansar Chand requested help from East India Company. However, east India Company rfused to do so .

The hill army surrounded Gurkha/Gorkha army comprising with one thousand soldiers. There was rainy season and rivers and rivulets were overflowing. The conditions for Gurkha/Gorkha was not suitable. The Gurkha/Gorkha commander Shamser Jung was in terror. The Army astrologer Harku Padhya enhance the self esteem of soldiers and five hundred Gurkha/Gorkha soldiers jumped into the fray and cut 500 soldiers by their Khukri (sword).  By killing Hill soldiers, Gorkha/Gurkha army reached at safe place.
Amar Singh tried to capture Punjab regions – Pinjor, Narayangarh and Laharpur (those were initially under Sirmaur) but was unsuccessful due to British and Sikh Army. He also tried to capture Budhiya and Palasi but could not do anything.
East India Company was in rage due to attack of Thapa on its territories.
Amar Singh Thapa Meeting Colonel Ochterlony
Colonel David Ochterlony was regional commander of East India Company of Punjab region. He wanted to punish Amar Singh Thapa for his attack on Butauli etc. However, Govenr Genral did not allow Ochterlony to fight with Gurkha/Gorkha.

There are un-proofed and non-analyzed tales, written statements /articles, sayings, and folk tales from Gorkha
Gurkha sides about Gurkha/Gorkha attacks on Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal, Gurkha/Gorkha capturing Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal; Gurkha/Gorkha rule in Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal.
Gurkha/Gorkha Tales about Gurkha/Gorkha Capturing Kumaon
Nepali writer  Ramji Upadhaya writes in Nepalko Itihas arthat Digdarshan (Suba Homnath, Kedarnath, Banaras , 1950) That Kumaon King had influences on Acchap and Doti Kingdoms (Now, in Nepal). After capturing Doti, Nepali / Gurkha/Gorkha arm led by Amar Singh Thapa marched towards Kumaon and there was battle between Kumaoni army and Gurkha/Gorkha army in Gangoli. Gurkha/Gorkha army defeated Kumaon Army and Kumaoni King fled to Almora. Gurkha/Gorkha captured Almora in ealrly 1791.
Historical Discussion on Gurkha/Gorkha Tales about Gurkha/Gorkha Capturing Kumaon
The reliable records show that Gurkha/Gorkha army attacked on Kumaon in January 1790. On those days, Mahendra Chand the son of Mohan Chand was ruling Kumaon. Atkinson mentions that Gurkha/Gorkha captured Almora in February 1790.

History Analysis for Gurkha/Gorkha Sayings Tales about Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Garhwal

History: Gorkha Folk Tales and Sayings, Reports about Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Kumaon, Garhwal, Himachal -2

History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -62

Gurkha/Gorkha Sayings Tales about Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Garhwal
Gurkha/Gorkha Historian Ramji Upadhyaya stated that Gurkha/Gorkha captured Langurgarhi, Pauri Garhwal after capturing. It is said that the Garhwal King Pradyuman Shah with his friend Jagat Prakash of Sirmaur was defeated by Gurkha /Gorkha army. They both fled away. Sirmaur King accepted the rule of Gurkha and Gorkha. There was Gorkha /Gurkha rule in Garhwal just after Langurgarh battle. As per Upadhyaya, there was Gurkha/Gorkha rule in Kumaon, Garhwal, and Haridwar in 1792. On that time Gurkha/Gorkha army had to return Nepal as China attacked on Nepal (Atkinson).
Discussion on Gurkha/Gorkha Sayings Tales about Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Garhwal
According to Nepal saying, Gurkha captured Garhwal in 1792 and the army crossed Alaknanda River. It was said that Sirmaur King Kirti Prakash (father of Jagat Prakash) went to help Garhwal and he was not given sufficient supply of food etc from Garhwal side. Kirti Prakash died in 1789.
Both the stories are wrong as there are no records in Garhwal. Sirmaur King Jagat Prakash  helped Garhwal King Jai Kirti Shah in 1785.Perhaps Jagat Prakash came to Langurgarh in 1792,and while returning to Sirmaur he died  in Lakadghat (12 miles near to Chandighat). Therefore Jagat Prakash death can’t be before 1792. There are no records for Jagat Prakash accepting Gurkha/Gorkha Rule. According to Garhwal saying, Jagat Prakash deceived Garhwal and had accord with Gorkha around Langurgarh (a Handwritten note ‘Rajawali ‘ of Tehri Court  Museum along with papers of Historian Hari Krishna Raturi as described by Dr Dabral) . According to “Rajawali’, Jagat Prakash and his assistant Ishwar Singh died in Lakadgarh.

History Discussion on Rebellion in Garhwal and Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Garhwal

History: Gorkha Folk Tales and Sayings, Reports about Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Kumaon, Garhwal, Himachal -3

History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -63

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -582

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Upadhyaya stated many tales in Nepal ko Itihas (Digdarshan, Banaras). However, most of stories mentioned as Historical accounts were discarded by World Eminent Dr. Shiv Prasad Dabral.
Upadhaya wrote that there were infighting among Bhardar and Umrav -court administrators of Nepal. Therefore, Garhwal King, with the help of Gurkha/Gurkha representatives Hakim Sardar Dalbir Rana  revolted against Nepal Kingdom. Therefore, in April 1805, Hastidal Chautariya, Kaji Dalmukh Singh, Sradar Bhakti Thapa, Kaji Narvir Singh Basnet, Kunwar Ranjit Prabhuti , other Hills Kings and Gurkha/Gorkha Army entered into Garhwal. Sheesram from Garhwal was there to resist Gurkha/Gorkha Army at the banks of  Kali River and Mandakini River. There was battle and Sheeshram fled with his army. Gurkha/Gorkha army followed Sheeshram and Bhakti Thapa  killed him in Khsapilung.  That way, Gurkha/Gorkha army recaptured Shrinagar.
Discussion on Rebellion in Garhwal and Gurkha/Gorkha Rule in Garhwal
1-Reaper also mentioned about Garhwal-Gurkha Treaty of 1792 and Gurkha/Gorkha representative in Shrinagar Garhwal.
2-The folk tale states that Gurkha Representative and Garhwal King revolted against Gurkha/Gorkha rule. There is no mention of such incident in folk tales –‘Baiju Bamni’or  Nepalya Bamni and Gorkhyon ka Daur’.
3- The Gorkha/Gurkha attack on Garhwal in April 1805 is wrong as in Digdarshan, Ranbahadur ordered Gurkha to capture Garhwal in 1804. However, Ranbahadur was in Banaras till January 1804.Therefore there is confusing dates about Gurkha /Gorkha rule in Nepal ko Itihas.
4- Most Probably, Khshapilung would be in Mandakini Region (Nagpur) –‘Chopildhunga’. Perhaps Sheeshram resisted Gurkha/Gorkha army at –‘Chopildhunga’.
5- Sheeshram was not killed by Bhakti Thapa in the cited battle as Sheeshram became faithful to Gurkha army after paving safe way for King Pradyumna Shah. Gurkha appointed Sheesram as ef administrator (Amil) of Dehradun. Sheeshram put hands of Mahnat into boiling Oil in Dehradun after Gurkha capturing Deahradun. Brothers of Sheeshram were supporting British before British captured Dehradun.
6- There is no mention of Amar Singh Thapa in the above folk tales of Upadhyaya. It seems Amar Singh Thapa was not there at the time of Gurkha/Gorkha attack on Garhwal. He reached Shrinagar after some time. Maularam (Gadhrajvanshkavya) also mentions that Hastidal Chautariya and other commanders were in Shrinagar before Amar Singh Thapa reached to Shrinagar.
