The Garhwali short story ‘Ghutu ki Bwe’ by Parma Nand Balodi is a mixture of realistic and at the end highly dramatic and straitlaced, moralistic didactic events.
Ghutu lives in Delhi for his earning. His mother and wife live in village. However, his old aged mother and his wife do not see eye to eye each other. There is always high drama when both quarrel. Ghutu come to village and watch behavior of his mother and wife. He takes decision to bury his mother alive in forest. He takes action but a shocking event happens and Ghutu is changed man.
The opening is arresting to readers, the plot is realistic, the events and dialogues and phrases are from the real life in the said story. The end is unexpected but catches the reader’s interest in the story.

The short Garhwali story ‘Bwada ki Vasiyat’ discusses the problem of old aged people of rural Garhwal.  The Garhwali short story indirectly directs the readers for thinking how to protect the old age people in rural Garhwal when their children are migrated and they are alone in rural Garhwal. The old age people of rural Garhwal whose children are away from them face many physical and mental problems and there is no government security for old age people of rural Garhwal.
The question of protecting old aged people’s interest in rural Garhwal is very uprising question and every Garhwali village is facing such question.
Shibbu Bwada has four sons working in different Indian cities. Shibbu Bwada marries his all children in Garhwal but everybody takes his wife or family with them leaving old parents in village. Shibbu Bwada loses his wife and becomes aloof. No son is taking any interest for his aloofness and physical or mental problems.  With the help of his friend Shibbu Bwada plays gimmick.
The story is based on an old folk story. Sudama Prasad wrote a story on the same line. However, Parma Nand Balodi weaves the story by modern problems and situation. The story narration style is conventional way and is away from contemporary story telling style. There are no dialogues and story is told by third person style. Dialects are from Salan region (Dugadda).

Dr Asha Rawat invariably writes Garhwali fiction on women subject. Specially, she depicts the inner side of Garhwali women perfectly in her Garhwali stories.  In present Garhwali story ‘Nandola’, Dr. Asha Rawat portrays the deep affection by a rural woman for her caw.  Nandola was married to a prosperous farmer family where there was no sign of poverty. There were ups and downs in her life as human beings.  Nandola is mother of two sons and two daughters in laws. However, due to daily quarrel among family members, Nandola’s husband Yaspal divides the family. Nandola has an old caw Bindwa(white spot on the forehead)  that was given to her one daughters in law while dividing the family properties.  Her daughter in law sells Bindwa immediately. Nandola had deep affection, love for the caw as the caw was part of Nandola’s life for many years. Nandola fell ill and do not take meal. Her husband takes a decision to get back the caw (Bindwa).
The story writer created many images of rural daily life specially the life of women in rural Garhwal. Dr Rawat also shows the deep emotional attachment of women for her domestic animals. The dialects are from Badalpur, Paino, Padalsyun regions. The dialogues are used to speed up the story and depiction of emotional values.  Story writer is successful in developing characters.

Narayan Datt Tiwari ex chief minister of Uttarakhand is connected with many scandals.  One of the great Indian satirists Puran Pant Pathik attacks indirectly on the behaviors of powerful person as Narayan Datt Tiwari. Humorously, Pant states that power is for influence to job get done but here the power is channelized for lust. Pant also satirizes on distribution of government posts to undesired or non capable people in Uttarakhand and people on higher post were not interested in solving the problems of unemployment or other works need for the society.

Jagdish Devrani is a story writer who believes in writing conventional stories.  Dharrmu and Shanta are poor married couple who are four children. Rupa is eldest daughter of Dharmu and Shanta. People like both the couple. Rupa is beautiful girl. All her friends are married. But at this age, Rupa is still unmarried. Once, Vasanti a married childhood friend of Rupa comes to her mother village and asks Rupa about her parents not interested to marry Rupa.    Rupa comes to know the reason that her family is poor family and the boys are interested to marry girls from prosperous family. Vasanti the childhood friend of Rupa helps the family to get suitable boy for Rupa. Rupa is now married to a most prosperous boy in the area.
The story is written in simple style and the style and theme are similar to Hindi stories of pre independence era. The language is dominated by Hindi words and it looks as if the wrier first thinks in Hindi and translates those thought into Garhwali.

Jagwal: An Eternal Love Story in Garhwali language
Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories -154
A critical Review and Analysis of Garhwali short story ‘Jagwal‘(Garh Aina, 12/8/1989) by Suman Semwal
Let Us Celebrate Hundredth Year of Modern Garhwali   Stories!

Suman Semwal did not write much in Garhwali. The Garhwali story ‘Jagwal ‘is about eternal love between Sapna and Sagar. Sapna and Sagar are neighbors and they have affection for each other supported by their parents. Sagar is studying for getting training for high government officer post. Sagar comes to attend New Year party that he can meet Sapna. Sapna takes promise from Sagar that he will never fluctuate from his duty (here passing training). He goes back completing his training. When his training is completed he gets a telegram from Sapna. Sagar comes back to his house and finds that cancer patient Sapna is no more. Till date he remembers Sapna.
There is scarcity of love stories in modern Garhwali fiction. Suman Semwal tries to fulfill that gap. However, the story pays more attention on idealism than emotional property of good love story. Suman could not make it impactful, intense, powerful love story.  The dialogues look like copies of Hindi film or popular Hindi novels.

Apunu ku Dukh: Story about bad effects of Parents interfering in married life of daughter
Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories -155

Jagdish Devrani writes modern Garhwali moral story. The present story ‘Apunu ku Dukh’ is about telling the readers that parents should not interfere unnecessarily on the lives of their married daughters. Ramesh is a government forest worker. His parents and wife Nisha live together. Nisha’s father writes a letter to his son law (Ramesh). Nisha forces her husband Ramesh to obey the advices of her father. Nisha starts living with her father. Now, there is rift in the family of Nisha’s father. Nisha’s father understands his mistake and the story ends in happy ending.
The story seems to be folk story in terms of moral message. However, Jagdish could create tension ata couple of situations in the story.
There are flaws in the Garhwali language in the writing of Devrani. He is not master of Garhwali and translate Hindi thought in Garhwali.  These types of writers are dangerous for Garhwali language as Devrani does use Hindi words and phrases while there are available Garhwali words and proper phrases for those Hindi words or phrases.

Dharma is a story of Dharma who is a technician or general appliances repairer in Delhi married to Geeta. Geeta works in an export import house and she has to meet male coworkers and has to call male coworkers to her house. They have a son .Dharma doubts or suspects that Geeta has affair with other males. They are separated and Dharma comes to his village starts his repairing business there. He remarried.  One day his well grown son from Geeta comes to meet him in village. Now Dharma wants to repent but it is too late.
Om Prakash Semwal develops his characters with methodology, the story has dialogues for focusing on the story line and there is satisfying end. There is tension and conflicts in the story for engaging the readers.  The story has two messages too but not as speeches. The language is from Upper Garhwal.
