Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories -164
Analysis of Garhwali short story ‘Bargat’
Critical Review of Garhwali Short Stories written by Mahesha Nand-2

                           Review by Bhishma Kukreti

‘Bargat’ is a short story written by Mahesha Nand and is one of stories from story collection ‘Augar’ (2013).
The story deals with issues of cleanliness, health and exploitation by local remedies doctors (Jhad Tad)
The story teller Mahesha Nand illustrates the story with a flow that reader does not leave the story till end gets due surprise from the story narrator.
From the first few lines, Bargat is captivating story.
Mahesha Nand uses story telling style as he is telling a folk story but with modern subject.
The plot, setting, characterization in the story is praiseworthy
In many stanzas, the story flow is as poetic flow. There are raptures in a short story and that is the specialty of Mahesha.
The dialogues are from real Garhwal villages. As is the characteristics of Mahesha Nand the language is Thet Garhwali or could be said unadulterated one from modern education.
Mahesha Nand is teacher by profession and this author found that he does not mind telling the motivational motto at the end.

Danyasti: A Sad Story illustrating children disregarding parents
Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories -165
Analysis of Garhwali short story ‘Bargat’
Critical Review for Garhwali Short Stories written by Mahesha Nand-3

                           Review by Bhishma Kukreti

Danyasti short story by Mahesha Nand is not a new story in Garhwali story world. Past story creators published many stories in Modern Garhwali literature about children ignoring parents in villages or sending back their parents to villages or orphan houses.
The subject is not new, the plot is also not exclusive and the social conditions are also not new in Danyasti story by Mahesha.
The present story is important from the point of view of presentation and new phrases used by Mahesha Nand. His phrases in the present story make the story important for Garhwali fiction world.
Mahesha uses analogies for speeding the story.
उपरी पंछी तरां टपराणु छौ .
फूलीं मुंडली घांडी सि  लाळ जन डगड्याणि छै  .
धौम्पा कुंलैं कि सि डाली घळकि
Mahesha Nand is master in using pair words usually used in oral communication in Garhwal and Mahesha uses them as his domesticated slaves. Kathait appreciated his uses of pair words too.
चैल-पैलम , रक्च्वड़ा-रकचोड, अबलाट-छबल़ाट
Mahesha uses words those are not used by educated Garhwali even in Garhwal. Garhwalis should thank Mahesha for making them in uses as
कळयूर, कमताण, रैसान, गासी  .
Readers would enjoy the sad story as Mahesha is successful in creating pathos.

Kutnnyu Chhwara: A Folk Story narrated in new Style
Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories -166
Analysis of Garhwali short story ‘Kutnnyu Chhwara’
Critical Review for Garhwali Short Stories written by Mahesha Nand-4
There are folk stories those are floating in different localities.  Present story ‘Kutnnyu Chhwara’ by Mahesha Nand looks as folk tale. Mahesha Nand narrated the folk story theme in very modern style.
Kutin means the woman that beats and thrashes full grains and makes grains for cooking. The story is about a Kutin trapping a fox due to specific reason. The fox obeys her and helps her for her getting fertile field from rich farmer and big house from village chief. Lastly, fox helps her for marrying her son with rich man’s daughter with grace but through fox tricks. Story keeps readers interested in executing actions for strategies by the fox.
The story is simple and Mahesha Nand narrated the story in his own style. His narration is interesting and reader reads till the end in one sitting. As is his style, Mahesha Nand uses Theth Garhwali words for narrating the story.  Mahesha prefers naming the characters as per their profession.
Overall, the story is interesting.

Gail Bald: Garhwali Story about deceptive way of selling (Galadari)
Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories -168
Analysis of Garhwali short story ‘’
Critical Review for Garhwali Short Stories written by Mahesha Nand-6
  Literature Historian: @ Bhishma Kukreti
Gail-Bald (the lazy bull) is the story about Galadar (live stock trader) selling live stock by deceptive methods. In villages, there are live stock traders those sell the domestic animals by tricks and buyers get unwanted or undesired animal that might be a cow, buffalo or bull pair.
The story is an unreliable seller sells his lazy bull pair to Puranu. Now, the story tells the bad fate of Puranu.  The story is interesting in telling the pain for Puranu and the question is for readers about the way Puaranu sells those bulls.
The story is from Garhwali society and happens on daily basis. Mahesha Nand uses proverbs and phrases as ‘Bhappi- Suppi’, ‘Thamthayt’, Dam Dharan’ for making the story interesting and speeding the story.
The story teller uses descriptive and dialogues for forwarding the story. Phrases as ‘ Baldun Thamthyat ar Ghandyun Chhamchhyat’ offer pleasure for readers.
The dialogues and description fit to story characters. Even Mahesha describes the practical strategies used by Galadars as concealing and falsifying .
Those experienced the Galadari of unreliable traders would state that the story is real and they are witnesses for many such true events.  The story is interesting to read.
