by Hari Lakhera

by Hari Lakhea

Baghai Bani: Garhwali Tale illustrating the reasoning for Tiger becoming Man-Eater
(Chronological History and Review of Modern Garhwali Stories series )
( Review of Story ‘ Baghai Bani ‘(213,written by Mahesha Nand )
Review by Bhishma Kukreti ( Literature Historian )
-
Those lived in rural Garhwal they knew that Tigers don’t attack human beings nor they kill their prey until they are hungry.
However, these days, it is common Guldar or Tigers or leopards attacking human beings and eating human flesh too.
Mahesha Nand xplains the reason for tigers or Guldar becoming Man-eater through his modern story ‘Baghai Bani’ .
Mahesha Nand is successful in telling the story through personification style. In this story, Tiger and Tigress talk as human beings talk.  The dialogues between tiger snd tiger open many secrets of relationship among forest , humans and wild animals.
Mahesha Nand showed the hunger , the tragedy emotional of hunger and then he also discusses the real difference between Pap and Punya (sins and virtues ).
As Mahesha Nand famous for using words those are no more in common uses among Garhwali for illustrating story.
The dialogues between tiger and tigress are interesting and offer interest to the readers .
Over all the story puts sound impression on readers for protecting the forest and environment .

Gaun Gali: A Garhwali Short Story illustrating hard hitting changes in rural Garhwal
-
(Chronological History and Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories series)
(Review of Short story Collection ‘Meru Pahar ‘written by Rakesh M. Thapliyal-1)
(Review of ‘Ganv Gali a short story written by Rakesh M. Thapliyal )

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Literature Historian)

‘Gaun Gali’ is first Garhwali short story of story collection ‘Meru Pahar ‘ by Rakesh Mohan Thapliyal (born in Tehri, 1954) . Rakesh Mohan is famous for penning down memoir of sunken Tehri or the sunken capital of Tehri Riyasat too.
Gaun Gali is the story of a migrated Garhwali visiting his village after many years  narrated through dialogues. The migrated Garhwali toured his village for attending a marriage party .The writers illustrate all changes happening through dialogues between two or many characters. The liquor consumption has become very common and the Hero tastes every bit of liquor in the marriage as soon as he gets down from the bus to his village bus stop. The story takes the readers back thirty years and compares the today’s situation. The changes frustrate the hero or Migrated Garhwali that there are good comfortable physical changes but many unavoidable changes now dangerous for the society. The story writer is himself the migrated Garhwali and plays a neutral man role for narration the situation.
Story teller also shows now , cold relationship between him(Migrated one) and his parents due to his ignoring them due to unknown conditions. Thapliyal nether praises the new situation nor criticizes but the story tells that the story teller is injured and heartbroken
The style is definitely different that the narration is through dialogues but story writer did not use inverted coma or name of dialogues.
The language has Tehri dialects but is not hurdle in speed for story. The dialogues are s per character and readers enjoy each dialogue.
Sanjay Kothiyal the editor of Yogvani rightly states that the readers feel the charcters as seen by their own eyes.
This author enjoy the story .

Teeri Dam: A Garhwali Fiction witnessing pain of Sinking Tehri City

Chronological History and Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories/Fiction  series)
(Review of Short story Collection ‘Meru Pahar ‘ (Stories written by Rakesh M. Thapliyal-1)
(Review of ‘Teeri Dam’ a short story (story written by Rakesh M. Thapliyal )

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Literature Historian)

Tehri  city had been important town or city in literature of Garhwal. Dr Mahavir Prasad Gairola wrote a couple of stories surrounding Tehri (now sunk). Many Garhwali poets illustrated the pain of sinking Tehri for development making (modern India) . Rakesh Mohan Thapliyal is First Garhwali fiction writer that penned down as a witness the stories of sinking Tehri once the capital of Garhwal Kingdom. Yes! The Story ‘Teeri Dam’ contains tens of small stories. In Fact, Rakesh Mohan tried condensing the  subject of a standard novel into 7000 words short story.
The story starts from an old women visiting (frustratingly) to land settlement department and then opens a panorama of characters by characters telling the incidents; there are pains of people displaced or would be displaced, there are pains of getting compensations from settlement office, there are nepotism, corruption, lethargy in settlement office and various principles about dam constructions in the said story Teeri dam by Rakesh. Rakesh takes the readers to the history of Tehri city and also introduces with Chipko Hero Sundar Lal Bahuguna and his sayings about Dam.
The biggest back draw of the story is that there are many subjects in short story and in reality the plot is suitable for novel .A common reader likes story with one single or double plot, aim and subjects.
The subjects of the story are still live for discussion among politicians, administrators, anthropologists, environmentalists and societies too.
The story is narrated through dialogues that also makes complex situation for readers understanding the characters.
Rakesh Mohan tried his best to capture the scene of 100 years of picture of Tehri history and ten years of Dam construction. He is successful in illustration his aim.
Dialogues are as per characters, time and place. Rakesh uses successfully similes and metaphors for speeding up the story line too. This author never visited Old Tehri but by reading the said story, this author could easily view the Old Tehri, the beloved Tehri and constructing the Dam on Reverend Rivers Bhagirathi –Bhilangana confluence.
The language is from Tehri region and does not make any difference for  a reader from Dhangu, (South Pauri Garhwal), Rath (upper Pauri Garhwal or Neeti (China border Chamoli) for understanding the language. Rakesh proved wrong the supporters of standard Garhwali is the only alternate for Garhwali literature.

Daraiber: A Garhwali Short Story depicting daily life of Hill drivers

Chronological History and Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories/Fiction Series)
(Review of Short story Collection ‘Meru Pahar ‘ (Stories written by Rakesh M. Thapliyal-1)
(Review of ‘Daraibar ’ a short story (story written by Rakesh M. Thapliyal )

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Literature Historian)

Daraiber story is third story from story collection Meru Pahar ‘by story teller Rakesh Mohan Thapliyal. The ‘Daraiber’ story is very simple story about daily life of drivers of truck and buses from Hills of Uttarakhand. The story is twist less and simple. Yugvani editor Sanjay Kothiyal rightly appreciates Thapliyal that he was able for depicting real life of drivers, conductors driving truck and buses in Hills of Uttarakhand.
The story has dialogues but as Thapliyal’s style there are no inverted comas or separation methods showing dialogues. The language is from Tehri Garhwal and easily under stable. It is difficult for story teller to make a twist leaas story attractive but Rakesh Thapliyal has been susccsful in making the story attractive.

Parya: A bad story style from a learned literature analyst
(Chronological History and Review of Modern Garhwali Short Stories/Fiction Series)
(Review of Short Story Collection ‘Udrol’ (Stories written by Sandeep Rawat -1  )
 (Review of ‘Parya’ a
Garhwali Short story (Story written by Sandeep Rawat  )
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Literature Historian)
-
Parya a Garhwali story  is as “There was a king and Queen and both died and that is the end of story”.  There are worse than this story in Garhwali and I never criticized badly those stories. However, when a literature analyst as Sandeep Rawat publishes ‘Parya’ type story it is painful for me and for the whole Garhwali literature community.
Garhwali literature creative have more responsibilities than Hindi writers that their literature create more readers and make Garhwalis habitual of reading Garhwali prose. However, the’ Parya’ story by Sandeep frustrates me. The story is real one that a young woman loses her husband and she nurtures her two sons by raising buffalos and agriculture.  The potentiality is very high in the plot for showing struggle, pain and brave heart of the young widow but Sandeep fails on taking advantages of the potential plot.

Jhees story by Sandeep Rawat raises the discussion on inter-caste marriage. Two [air fell in love from the childhood and they desire to marry with each other too. However, society rules, culture and future do not allow for inter –caste marriage.
The story narration is simple and having common proverbs as Machhi Pani jan Jyu Paran. Sandeep followed the story telling style of folk story telling style that is simplest way. The story lacks romance that was a must in such plot. However, Sandeep leaves a question for the readers and up to certain extent , that makes story impressive.
