मेहंगु वैगे तु जाणी जा,

 दारू नि प्येंदु  मि हे राम राम रम्म रम्म रम्म रम्म
 सिकार नि खांदु , सिरी - सिरी ।
 नेता समाज सुधारक छौंऊं ,
 भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि ॥
 
 तुमारैं गुठयारो गोर छऊं , भोट डऴयाँ जरा देख चरी
 जातिकु थातीकु भित्राकु भैराकु , "ख " अर "ब " कू  ख्यालकरी
 दारू कछमोळी तुमुनै खाण -
 तुमारी जीत चा जीत मेरी । भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि .... ॥
 
 फिकर नि कर हे दरिद्रनोरण , लोन मंजूर करौलु त्यरु
 तेरि ग़रीबि कि गवैई दयोलु , ऐसुभि हौऴ लगैदे म्यरु
 गंठखुलै देजा करजा ल्हीजा -
 आँखा बूजी  अंगोठ धारी । भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि .... ॥
 
 बाब अर दादा भि नेता छा मेरा , मी भी छौं औलाद भि राली
 नेतागिरी को ठेक्का लियुंचा , लाख जोड्यावा लाख दया गाळी
 ई जोनिम भी वीं जोनिम भी -
 नेता छौं नेता हि रौलु मरी । भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि .... ॥
 
 खादी पैर - पैरी छाल़ा पड्यांन , धारना हड़तालुन टुटिनि भटयूड
 भाषण देकी जीब छणयेगे , गाळी सुणसुणी फुटुनि कन्दुड
 कुर्सिका खातिर मर मिट जौलू -
 छौड़ी नि सकदू नेता गिरी । भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि .... ॥
 
 गरीबू कि सेवाकु बर्त लिहयूँ चा , नेता भि छौं ठेकदार भि छौंऊ
 ब्योला ब्योल्यूँकू बऴद भैंस्युकु , व्योपारी गलेदार  भि छौंऊ
 सबि कुछ छौं पर मनखि नि छौं मी -
 दयब्ता बणयूँ छौं घड़ेलु धारी । भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि .... ॥
 
 खेत खल्याण बंटुलू सबुमा , येकि पुंगूडी वेका नौंऊं
 बेरोजगारू रोजगार दिलाणु , दारू चुआणू  गौंऊं गौंऊं
 राजनीति भनाणा छिन लोग -
 सुदि मुदि मेरु बदनाम करी । भज गोबिन्दम भजो हरि .... ॥

Lord Ripen: The First Authentic Modern Garhwali Poetry

                  Initial Developing Phase of Modern Garhwali Poetry (-1900)

 
               The Garhwali Poetry critics divided modern Garhwali poetry development into stages. The first stage is called Pratham uttahn as –to 1925.
          Harshpuri Gusain, Lila Datt Kotnala and Hari Krishn Dorgaditi Rudola are said to be first three modern Garhwali poets those initiated modern Garhwali poetries.
     The poetry manuscript by Harsh Gusain (1820-1905) was started by him on 48 (as written on his manuscript 48). 48 means Sanvat 49Jeth and that means he wrote poetries from 1892.
  Lila datt Kotnala was contemporary of Hindi literature creative Harish Chandra. Kotnala’s Hindi poetries used to be published in ‘Kavi vachan Sudha’ edited by Harish Chandra.
         Lila Datt Kotnala wrote poem ‘Lord Ripen’ paying respect to Viceroy Lord Ripen as Bhartendu Harishchandra wrote poem Ripnashtak’ supporting the reform policies of Lord Ripon. Lord Ripon was Indian viceroy from 1881-1884. That means the Garhwali poem ‘Lord Ripen’ was written before 1884. The logical analysis sate that ‘Lord Ripen’ is first authentic Modern Garhwali poetry.

तनि तुमरि गाई जांद जख तख कथा
भारत निवासी माँज स्वशासन चर्चा
पूरी जब कैल्या साब ! तब होली चर्चा

                  Lila Datt Kotnala wrote (1846-1926) Virah, holi and Usha Anirudh Vivah Garhwali poems. His Garhwali poetry collection book ‘Garhwali Chandmala’ in 1918 AD.

              Atma Ram Gairola is the Garhwali poets who initiated creating Garhwali poetry.

          Atma Ram Gairola was born 25th April, 1855 in Lal Dhung, Pati Badiyargarh of Tihri Garhwal.

           He used to publish his Garhwali poems in a monthly magazine- Garhwali. There are his poems published in Garhwali language poetry collection ‘Garhwali Kavitavali’. His poems are called as inspiring poems in Garhwali. Gairola used to inspire other Garhwalis to write poems in Garhwali rather than in Khadi boli.

         Chala gwero ! Goru hum charola bhyun ki raw, vakhi machha marla, dhungali bhi vakhi pakaula
Atmaramt Gairola is famous for his uses of pure Garhwali words in poem and was stern advocate of Garhwalism .  Atma Ram, Gairola pointed attention on the village system of Garhwal by his poems.
Atma Ram Gairola expired on 22 June, 1922
            The following poems of Gairola are proof that besides using pure Garhwali words he always used to pay attention on poetic values and lyrical values for creating poetries.
आत्माराम गैरोला (1855 -1922 ) की कविताएँ
      गई कुल्हाड़ी
गई कुल्हाड़ी दुई हाथ जोड़ी
डाळा  मु माँगी एक हाथ टैणी
नाचीज जाणी दिई तैन दीनी
सो , बेंड पैरी जड़ काटण बैठी। 
The Kulhadi poem stresses on cooperation and respecting each other than conflicts.
 पंछी पंचक
अरे जागा जागा कब बिटि च कागा उड़ी उड़ी
करी करी 'काका काका ' घर घर जगौणु तुम सणी. 
उठी गैन पंछी करण लगि गनै जय जय
उठा भायौ जागा भजन बिच लागा प्रभु जी का
"घूघती घूघती ' घुगति घूगता की अति भली
भली मीठी बोली मधुर मदमाती मुदमई
हरी डाँड्यौं कांठ्यौं धुनि पर धुनि छंन भरणी
हरी जी की गाथा हिरसी स्या च करणी
कुऊ कूऊ कुऊ कूऊ कुऊ कूऊ कुउऊ
छाजो धारु धारु बणु बणु बिटि गूंजण लगी
……।
The above poem is longer and shows that Gairola was master of creating geographical images.
          बटुलो 

घरमा कुछ आस मेरि छै
अब की दां सुत होण ज्यूं जरूर। 
सुत जोग  छ जन्म पत्री मा माँ
इनु जोशी जी भि बोल्दा छया।
हंसलो इनु खेललो इनु
इनु ग्वाया लगालो शनै शनै
हम दम्पति भी रहस्य मा

हत ! देंद सुणाइ 'बेटलो '
स्विलकूड़ा बिटि शब्द 'बेटुलो'
मरिगे निर्भाग'बेटुलो'
करिगे आस निरास 'बेटुलो'
सब ही आपण कुटुंब का
सुत माता अर भाई बंधु भी
छन शोक भर्याँ दुखी बड़ा
जनु कैको गयी हो मड़ो मरी

Betuli is is one of the best poems of Gairola. The poem discusses the importance of women and our ignoring their importance in society.
