Bagh ka Bon: A Garhwali Poetry Collection would be remembered for Newer Epitomes, Fresh Symbols, and Innovative Phrases
Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2280
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Bagh a Bon; A Garhwali Poetry Collection by Madhusudan Thapliyal
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

Madhusudan Thapliyal is famous for his Garhwali Ghazal and his first Garhwali Ghazal collection ‘Harbi-Harbi’ had been in discussion for long among Garhwali Literature creative.
At present, there are two types of poets in Garhwali poetry world. First poet documents as if he was just a Cameraman. Second types of poets take the readers in depth by their poems and compel them to rethink.
The present Garhwali Poetry collection has its importance more due to it has newer types of epitomes, similes, phrases. The human emotions and daily life does not change at all with times only physical dimensions change with time. There is morning, there is thirst, there is hunger and there is death. The poets have been describing emotions and daily life span or life span from the time they started creating poems. Therefore, the poet has to find new phrases or symbols to attract readers that they think deeply. Madhusudan Thapliyal expertly created newer phrases, symbols, epitomes, similes in his latest poetry collection ‘Bagh ka Bon (Forest of Tigers).
The subjects of in 53 poems of the said poetry (as philosophy, thirst, hunger, migration environment, blind faith, changing rural Garhwal, new State Uttarakhand) collection are also same those are burning issues of human beings and Garhwal. However, Madhusudan offers these subjects newness, novelty, originality, freshness, energy, loveliness from his new similes, images.
A few examples of those new symbols are as follows-

The poems of present collection are of free verses but are very poetic and readers would like to repeat in their mouth.
The present poetry collection 'बाघ का बोण’ has its importance in developing and evolving Garhwali poetry because the poems are not just a cameraman works by the poet but the poet compels readers to think and rethink about the issues taken by Madhusudan.
Bagh ka Bon 'बाघ का बोण’ is witness that the place of Madhusudan Thapliyal is same as critics place T.S. Elliot, Ezra Pound, Jules Laforgue, Anya Utler, Lidija  Dimkovska, Uwe Kolbe, Ales Stiger, Andre Veltner for modernizing the poetry of their respective languages.

Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2281
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of ‘Kachaaki’: a Garhwali Short Novel by Dr. Umesh Chamola

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

‘Kachaaki’ a Garhwali novel hits hard on sorcery, witchery, necromancy and also tells that whatever you do you will get it back in this life only.  The Novel ‘Kachaaki’ is a short form of Novel written by a poet, novelists, short story writer, folk literature collector,  and social activist Dr. Umesh Chamola.
The present Garhwali novel deals with the problem of blind faith on Sorcery, Witchery, and Necromancy etc even in the era of information. Masanti a widow and a step mother of the main character Deepa wants to protect her step daughter from the influence of her in laws. Masanti advises Deepa to have Jadu-Tona tactics to get rid of influence of her in laws sides. Deepa obeys her step mother and at the end she has to separate from her husband. Masanti finds that her deeds are before her and her past sinful deeds are now her enemies.
There are four main characters in the novel Masanti (step mother), Deepa, Prabhat (husband of Deepa), Jeevanand (the astrologer). The novelist is able to develop the characters of each character for constructing the story. Each character seems be real from present rural Uttarakhand. The characterization and dialogues for each character make the novel interesting and also create curiosity for readers finishing the novel till end in one sitting. The social novel is also offer moral preaching too.
Novelist Dr. Chamola is able to create various emotions required making novel exciting.
The events and incidents of novel look like as if the readers are habitual of such incidents in real world. The setting of novel provides the realism of present Garhwal.
Dr Umesh uses third person narration style in illustrating the incidents.
The language and dialogues are simple and phrases and proverbs used by the novelist create speed and energy in the novel. The simple language is positive aspect of the novel.
The timing of story is not limited to first part of twenty first century but the timing is also suitable for past and future.
The novel is interesting and moral oriented. There has been vacuum of Novel writing in modern Garhwali literature.  Dr. Umesh Chamola should be credited to fulfill the vacuum by publishing his second novel in Garhwali. The international critics would place the position of Dr. Chamola as they position novelists Zayd Mutte’ Dammaj, Stefan Zeromsky, Witold Gombrowicz, Pedro Guilherem-Moreira, J.Alencer, Clarice Lispector, Albert Camus, Marquis, Jose Maria Arguedas, Romulo Gallego, Patrick Suskind, Mari for developing their respecting language novel genre.

Garhwali Bhasha ar Sahitya ki Vikas Jatra: A Book for Collector’s Choice

Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2283
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of ‘Garhwali Bhasha ar Sahitya ki Vikas Jatra’ (2014) by Sandip Rawat
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

Garhwali Bhasha ar Sahitya ki Vikas Jatra (Chaudahvin Sadi bati abari tak Bhasha ar Sahitya ko aitihasik Vikas Kram) is first attempt to offer historical accounts of Garhwali prose, poetry and other segments of literature together in book form in Garhwali language. The book is a must for every Garhwali for his library.
The records of Garhwali language literature were lost at many stages of history. There were earth quakes and floods in Shrinagar that we don’t get historical records of the Shah Kings of Garhwal. There were invasion by Joshis from Kumaon that Kumaoni pundits took various literatures from Garhwal with them.  Gorkhalis destroyed various records in Shrinagar and elsewhere that we don’t get chorological history of Garhwal and Garhwali language development.
‘Garhwali Kavitavali’ (1935) is the first record with us that offers criticism of Garhwali literature. The characteristics of poets poetry is written in Hindi in ‘Garhwali Kavitavali’. Gad Matyeki Ganga (1975, edited by Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna and assisted by Durga Prasad Ghildiyal) is first historical accounts of Garhwali prose written in Garhwali. ‘Shailvani (1991, edited by Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna) is first historical accounts of Garhwali poetry in Garhwali language. Dr Anil Dabral published Garhwali Gady Parampara (History of Garhwali prose) in Hindi and Dr. Kotnala published detailed History of Garhwali poetry in Hindi (2010). Bhishma Kukreti published history of Garhwali literature of each segment on Internet in English.
Credit goes to learned research scholar Sandip Rawat for publishing Historical aspects of Garhwali language of all segments in one book in Garhwali.
The book has four major parts in the book. ‘Garhwali Bhasha ar Sahitya ki Vikas Jatra’ .
The first part deals with the Garhwali language, its characteristics and proverbs and sayings for detailing the nature of Garhwali language.
The second part features grammatical aspects of Garhwali language.
Third portion is major portion of detailing the growth of Garhwali language and its modern literature including inscription literature. The researcher Sandip Rawat offers periodical development and provides the critical developmental history of Garhwali literature. Sandip describes most of poets, prose makers and other literature genre makers and their works no doubt in short. That detailing shows the hard work of Sandip Rawat.
Sandip tries his best for illustrating the characteristics of major Garhwali literature contributors. Sandip has been neutral in describing critical aspects of Literature creators. Rawat also presents the details of age wise periodicals and social organizations those contributed
The fourth part is about specific aspects of Garhwali literature as standardization etc.
Sandip Rawat has been successful in providing necessary details of critical developmental history of Garhwali language in 192 pages.
Sandip Rawat uses simple language for his critical notes. The language is easy to understand the note.
The book provides every aspect of grown of Garhwali language and its literature in each medium till date. The book is a mile stone in the history of Garhwali Literature.
The position of Sandip Rawat in Garhwali literature is same as David Daises (English); Helen Watnable –O’Kelly (German); Prince D.S. Mirsky (Russian);   Burgwinkle, Hammould and Wilson(French) ; Peter Brand (Italian); J. Romily ( Greece); Istavan Nemeskurty , Klaniczayy (Hungarian); David T.Gies (Spanish); Czeslaw Milosz (Polish); Miguel Tamen (Portuguese) are positioned for offering us the critical history of respective language literature.

Nantino ki Sajoli; the First Combined Children Poetries in Garhwali and Kumaoni

Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2284
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature Series)
Review of ‘Nantinon ki Sajoli (2014): Garhwali-Kumaoni Children Poetry Collection by Dr. Umesh Chamola and Vinita Joshi
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)
Credit goes to ‘Nantino ki Sajoli’ (2014) as the first combined children poetry collection in the History of Garhwali and Kumaoni language literature. The Garhwali poems in this volume are in real sense the poems for children. The poetry collection is also an attempt to have books on Garhwali learning materials for those who wish to learn Kumaoni and Garhwali language.
As happened in other language literature history, literature creators created poetries for children as preaching poetries in Garhwali and Kumaoni language literature. The poetry collections of Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna (Ankh-Pankh) and Puran Pant ‘Pathik’ (Dudhak Doodh Panik Pani)  in Garhwali language are called children poetries but are for young generations. The present verse collection is  in real sense poems for  children and are not aimed for preaching the children but more for enjoying the children (below age of teen).
Both the poet and poetess offer poems of imageries of visual, tactile, auditory, olfactory, kinesthetic and gustatory and they both also offer poems of simile, metaphor and personification figurative images.
The themes of the poems are taken from our daily life and it is easy for child to connect the poetry with her/his own experience too. .
The rhyme and rhythm of each poem is suitable to the child and easily understandable. Both the poets tried their best not to indulge their intellectuality to show their supremacy in creating the poems. That is the reason the poems are very easy to understand by child of five –seven years old too.
The poetries or this volume encourage the child to read more and more Garhwali or Kumaoni poems as poems are simple and memorable.
The book carries illustrations for enhancing the attraction for children to read the poetries.
The book is very important for both the languages and would be called a mile stone in the history of modern Kumaon and Garhwali Literature.
Garhwali and Kumaoni people will remember Dr. Umesh Chamola and Vinita Joshi in coming days as critics and people remember famous children poets Dr Seuss; Robert Stevenson; Shel Silverstein;   James McDonald; Josie Whitehead; Chukovsky; Chernyi Marshak. William Blake; A.A.Milne;.
Every reader should keep this book for their libraries.

The Asian legend singer Narendra Singh Negi rightly said that present lyric collection will fill the gap of no or less lyrics in present n Garhwali Poetic world. Virendra Panwar is famous Garhwali poet and critics. The present lyric collection is about showing his concern for society, geographical and human environment. The lyric collection has freshness and lyrics are capable inspiring readers to think.

The subject of each lyric is having different subject as worshipping (Sarswati vandana), new changes in Garhwal (Gadhwal Badalgya); philosophy of life (Pani); curses of alcohol consumption increase (Ghughti Ghuara Ghura); Political betrayal (Gairsain Dur); climate changes and its effects on society (Kafal); High urbanization and centralized administration in Uttarakhand (sabi Dhani Dehradun) and so on.  As Indian legend singer Narendra Singh Negi said that there is least love song in this collection of Virendra than other burning issues of common men.
The lyrics are outcome of lyrist own experiences of rural Garhwal. The lyrics are easily readable and understandable. Definitely readers would like to sing the song.

Akhyon man: Garhwali Poetries Searching Humanity and Attacking Putrefying System

Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2289
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of Garhwali Poetry Collection ‘Ankhyon man’ by Gajendra Nautiyal
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

Readers would definitely enjoy the Garhwali poetry collection ‘Akhyon man’.  ‘Akhyon man’ a Garhwali poetries collection is certainly a notable poetry collection in Modern Garhwali Poetry world. The poetries are in search of humanity and at the same time attacking, criticizing, raising questions about rotting present system in government administration, politics and society.
There are three types of poetries in this volume of drama activist, social worker and lyrist Gajendra Nautiyal –Ankhyun man, Ankhyunsi and Ankhyun thai . In Ankhyun man portion, the poet tries to search the missing humanity in present world. In Ankhyunsi and Ankhyun parts the poet directly attacks on putrefying system in the government, politics and society.  Second portion poems are lyrical and in old Sanskrit chhanda pattern.
The following poem from ‘Ankhyun man’ portion is proof that poet has his own experience about loss of humanity in this time -
The social activist turned lyrist Gajendra attacks system by various ways, means and subjects, He criticizes the conditions of present Uttarakhand where the dreams of people are falling flat, all the governments came in power never tried to fulfill the aspirations of people. The poet Nautiyal condemns the lies of politicians, administration and politicians for their false works to fulfill the people needs.
