Mahraj,

mee arivind da se sahmat chiyo.

Prantu hame sabse pahli apun ghar bati eek shuruwaat karan padali.
(I agree with Arvind da but first we have to start promoting our language from our home itself, teach our children our languages other than english, hindi etc).

meele nainital mai dekho ek sardar ji bilkul pahadi mai karanee. to hum logo kile na apun nantin kai apun bhasha sikhanu.

Mehta ji dhanyavaad bahut achha topic uthane ke liye. Mere khayal se yeh saari baat 1 hi jagah pai aa kar atak jaati hai ki humari bhasha nahi hai boli hai aur isi wajah se iski koi lipi nahi hai. Arvind ji ki baat bhi sahi hai ki itni saari tarah ki bolian Uttarakhand main boli jaati hain ki Hindi main hi baat karni padti hai taaki har kisi ki samajh main aa jaae.

Yes , Its a common fact that people from our community hesitate while speaking in their own language at public places . I do not know why ? What i have noticed is that they try to avoid it ?

Personally I always try to prefer our own language when ever i comes to know that the person is from our own community . Obviously you can identify your people from their surnames , face, or from tone as well .

But many times i have noticed the people in front of you keeps on talking in hindi even if you are taking the initiative to use your own language .

I think we have to change the way our people think . It will also help us to reduce the gap we have in between us .

Well,

Friends, its always good to have our language whatever the dialect (doesn't matter) to be passed on to the new generation.

Wether u r in pune, London, Paris u may choose to speak the local for the comfort of others, and no doubt its always good to speak in a language which is understand by the listeners.

Question here is that why we are not speakeing our lanaguage when we meet our Unttarkhandi bhai's and I feel at times peole feel uncomfortable when u r speaking Uttarkhandi to other Bhai in a public place whereas Punjabi, Marathi people feel proud of using the same in discussions with his/her respective Bhai.

Main reason is that we have never tried to pass on this to our new generation.
And this should happen.... so that the generations should know their roots and culture past which I belive people living outside Uttrakhand are forgetting.

Sabhi Uttarakhandi bhai-behano te meru pranam,

Mee Uttarkashi beeti chau aur Mee tein garhwali puri aundi cha aur meeni garhwali honu ku garv cha.
Now I would like to continue in English because there a number of people who doesn't understand garhwali.
Yes, it's correct that people from Uttarakhand generally don't prefer to speak in Uttarakhandi language. I have heard a lots of excuses for this shameful behavior towards our local language. A portion of your uttarkhandi population prefer to reply... "I can understand but can't speak" and few other prefer to reply with words like... "I was born or living far from Uttarakhand so don't know uttarakhandi local language" and rest people feel shy speaking in garhwali/Kumaoni.

But as far as my thinking is concerned, I don't agree with these baseless excuses. There are a number of guys including myself who are born or living far from Uttarakhand but they still speak in their Uttarakhandi local language. As an example... I was just 4 when my father got transferred to Ambala in Haryana along with the family, but all my family members speak in garhwali that too fluently.

There is a say... "HOME is the first school for children" and whatever parents speak we learn that particular language.... As per my experience... most of the Uttarakhandi parents (Please don't get hurt, but IT'S THE FACT TODAY) don't prefer to maintain/speak their language (Garhwali/Kumaoni) at home, instead they prefer to speak in Hindi or english, hence today's generation do not value their Uttarakhandi language. As per me this is the root cause of the isssue we discussing here.

Solutions to this problem can be:

1. All Parents should start speaking their own language at home and healthy efforts should be applied to maintain our own language speaking environment. By doing this atleast our next generation will be fully in touch with our language and culture.
2. All others who generally prefer to make excuses should develop their confidence towards garhwali. Their is no age limit to learn a language so please start speaking in your Uttarakhandi language, Don't worry if you are unable to speak it correctly... but remember your continous efforts can improve your confidence towards your own Uttarakhandi language. Start speaking in Garhwali/Kumaoni, watch Garhwali/Kumaoni movies or listen the Uttarakhandi songs, etc.
3. ONE SHOULD NOT LAUGH WHEN SOMEBODY IS NOT SPEAKING THEIR LANGUAGE CORRECTLY, IT HURTS HIS/HER CONFIDENCE AND IN FUTURE THAT PERSON CAN AVOID SPEAKING IN UTTARAKHANDI LANGAUGE, INSTEAD WE CAN CORRECT HIS/HER MISTAKE TO IMPROVE HIS/HER CONFIDENCE LEVEL.

Please forgive me if somebody is hurt with my words/views... but this is the fact today.

So we have received mixed reponses from our members. In nutshell, we can say :

   -    We should make an environment at home where our children can also learn the langugage. It means "we should start speaking kumoani / garwali and other language and teach our children also"

  -     In our uttarakhandi gathering, the achor should also try to speak in kumoani /garwali /jaunsari. In on programme, i had seen Anil Daundiyal, who was conversant in both the langauges. He spoke in both the languages as per the artiest programme. So there was no complaint of any kind in that.

-      We should also bring to the notice of our political leaders to give speaches in their constinencies in kumoani /garwali / jaunsari etc so that people can take more interest.

Pahari is a beautigul lanuage and its a pity that Gennext is unable to speak it fluently. who is to blame? I think parents should make sure that their children speak to them i pahari. So what if the language has ben derived from nepali, hindi and marath? Once we have adopted it, it has become our own. I myself cant speak kumauni very fluently and I am definitely not proud of it!!

I am inclined to agree with Arvind; and add that one should voluntarily ensure that ability of using the dialects remains within the family, State and amongsts group friends. At the end of the day, neither Kumaoni nor Garhwali is a language. Those disagree with us, read the line at end of my signature!

BECAUSE,

""""""""There is no uttrakhandi language.""" """"""""" ""

Whatever,we speak is a dialect ,deriving its words from Hindi, Marathi and Nepali bhasha.

While writing it ,it is Devnagri Lipi.

Either it is Kumauni or Garhwali or Jaunsari or Tharu or Buxa or Punjabi or Hindi.

What dialect will a garhwali uttrakhandi from Tehri speak in?
What dialect will a kumaoni uttrakhandi from Okhalkanda speak in?
What dialect will a jaunsari uttrakhandi from Kotdwar speak in?
What dialect will a punjabi uttrakhandi from Rudrapur speak in?
What dialect will a jaat uttrakhandi from Haridwar speak in?
What dialect will a bengali uttrakhandi from mahtosh mor speak in?
What dialect will a tharu/buxa uttrakhandi from Khateema speak in?

Next time when you meet all of these uttrakhandis ,make a choice, how would you like to speak.

I attempted speaking Kumaoni once in a local uttrakhandi function ,and immediately I realised a strange look on the face of some of my Garhwali friends and I discontinued midway and started in Hindi to everybody's comfort.

Maharaj, it is as good as arguing as to why are we  posting our mails in English, why
not in hindi ,our mother tongue ?

Same logic, convenience , not complexes.

Arvind

Dosto,

As you are aware India is a multi culture and multi language country. However, we have “Unity in Diversity”. Generally, it is seen whenever any Punjabi, Gujrati, Benali, South Indian meet their people they prefer to speak in their own languages but when it is point of Uttarakhandi, this is somewhat not seen amongst us.

Most importantly, in many cities Uttarakhandi culture programmes are held. The programme goes on in our languages (like songs, plays etc) but Anchor and the Chief Guest always speak in Hindi or English. The same is the situation, of our Political Leaders also. They go for canvassing in hill areas and other places but their speeches are in Hindi only.  (I am not discouraging of speaking our national language Hindi but we must also teach our new generation our regional language also so that they can take interest towards their culture also).

After all, why do we Uttarakhandi Hesitate in Speaking our own languages. May be the inferior complexity ? (Why ? -  We are none to second in any field).

We invite to participate in this debate :-

Umesh ji,

Maine kayee jagah par dekha hai ! apne office mai bhi log same bhasha jannae ke baad bhi apas mai usi bhasma mai baad nahi karte.

Haa dusri .. ek bidambana hai. Uttarakhand chota sa rajya hai par yahan par bhashaye alag-2 boli jaati hai! Yadi gaur kare to unme jyade antar nahai. Khaskar kumoani and gardwali. Yahan thoda sa jaunsari alag hai.

Prashan hai ki is promote kaise kare….. Only way is cultural programme .

Apne bachho ko to hum ghar par apni bhasha me bolna chahiye.
