Tremendous support to Anna Hazare agitation in Uttarakhand
By Ravindra Saini in Dehradun
THE agitation by Anna Hazare against corruption received tremendous support from the hill state of Uttarakhand. People are in the streets in favour of a strong Jan Lokpal. The agitation is growing stronger day-by-day and is also spreading in remote areas of the state.
The march taken out in Dehradun on August 17 received support of unprecedented magnitude. Despite heavy rains not only the members of many social organisations, public groups, students, women, children and people participated in march. The protesters carrying the tricolour shouted slogans against corrupt people and demanded strong Jan Lokpal to curb the rampant corruption. Advocates boycotted the court, students did not attend the schools and colleges and the ex-soldiers also came out from their houses to lend their support to the agitation.
ABVP organised a protest march and also burnt the effigy of Congress-led UPA government. ABVP made it clear that it would continue to protest against corruption. “We appeal to the people to be united against corruption and extend full support to the agitation against corruption,” ABVP said in a statement issued in Dehradun.
Thousands of Gurukul Kangari University Teachers Welfare Association and Bharat Swabhiman Trust activists took out a rally in support of Anna Hazare in Haridwar. People from all walks of life including former Uttarakhand Chief Minister BC Khanduri took out rally in support of Anna Hazare in Dehradun. Expressing solidarity with Anna Hazare, Shri Khanduri led a march from Shivaji Dharmashala to Parade Ground and condemned the undemocratic crackdown on peaceful agitators. Meanwhile, a group of student organisations presented a mashal to Shri Khanduri on August 24 and urged him to lead the fight against corruption.
