Dehradun, 16 Oct: Virasat, which is being organised by Rural Entrepreneurship for Art and Cultural Heritage (REACH) these days, claims to be the biggest cultural festival of its kind in Asia. But, on Monday, a shocking incident took place that casts doubt about the organisation’s credentials with regard to promoting culture and heritage.
The musical programme of renowned Uttaranchali folk singer Narendra Singh Negi was cancelled at the last second, today. This clearly indicates the approach of the organisers toward local artists. If this can happen to the voice of Uttaranchal, Negi, one can guess how the Virasat people would treat other unsung artists of the hill state.
A festival of culture cannot just base itself on the art forms of the past, if it cannot countenance living culture of the present, however politically sensitive.
Narendra Negi, after performing at Chamyala, was on his way to Dehradun. He was informed when he was at Byasi that his musical performance had been cancelled. Negi’s artists from New Delhi and Garhwal had already arrived to give the performance at Virasat. But for dubious reasons, his show was cancelled.
Speculation was rife that due to pressure from the State Government, REACH was not interested in hosting Narendra Negi’s programme. When Garhwal Post approached Lokesh Ohri, Joint Secretary of REACH, a few days ago he said, “We are interested but are finalising the dates.” When asked about alleged pressure from the state government to cancel Negi’s

But, on Monday, all the claims proved hollow and Negi had to return to Pauri without performing. An insult to the folk arts of Garhwal that the people here, whose money is funding the programme, are unlikely to forget.
It will be recalled that Narendra Negi’s musical album ‘Nauchami Narayan’ is one of the most in demand VCDs ever in Uttaranchal. It is a satirical comment on the emerging political culture of the state which has struck a chord with the people. By turning away Negi, Virasat has proved to be merely the outward form of the performing arts, a mere marketing exercise – certainly not the repository of artistic conscience.

यह वास्तव मे यह बहुत ही निंदनीय घटना है! हमारे राज्य में इस प्रकार के आयोजन हो रहा है और राज्य के सबसे लोकप्रिय एव वरिष्ठ लोक गायक के प्रोग्राम को अंतिम समय में निरस्त कर दिया जाता है !
और सबसे चौकाने वाली बात है हमारे राज्य सरकार बिलकुल चुप है ! इससे यह प्रतीत होता है कही ना कही नेता लोगो की भी इसमें मेहरवानी होगी !
ये शायद " नौछमी" नारायणा एल्बम जिसमे नेगी जी ने नेताओ की अच्छी क्लास लगाई थी, उसके बदले की राजनीती हो सकते है !
फिर भी शर्म आणि चाहिए यह राज्य के गौरव का सवाल है !

ये एक उदाहरण है । जब एक प्रतिशठित कलाकार के साथ एसा व्यवहार हो रहा हो तो आम उत्तराखन्डी का क्या हाल होगा?
एसे बहुत से लक्ष्य प्रश्न हैं जिनका समाधान होना उत्तराखंड के अस्तित्व में आने से लेकर उसके भविष्य के निर्धारण के लिये जरूरी हैं ।
