Prime Minister material of BJP-LK Advani

Lal Karishna Advani, the former Deputy Prime Minister had a shot in arm when the Parliamentary Board of the Bharatiya Janta Party decided to declare the former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the Parliamentary elections which are due in 2009. For Advani this is great dream fulfilled. He has thus been able to give an apt reply to his detractors and has also been able to get away with the shadow of Jinnah which was so badly haunting him for so long. Congress on the other hand has retaliated by saying that there is already a Prime Minister in the country and it is hypothetical to declare a Prime Ministerial candidate.  The Congress’ stand is that the party believes in the Indian Constitution and as per the provisions of the Constitution the Parliamentary party would elect its leader after the elections. While the political observers were busy analyzing the situation the BJP took this unprecedented step in a hurry.  It is believed that this silent coup was generated by the internet Bloggers who are asserting themselves in every sphere of life.

It was being deliberated in the internet that Sushil Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat may be tipped as the Prime Ministerial candidate instead of L.K.Advani. The same day things moved in such fast speed that the senior leaders in the Party got frightened with the jet speed of Modi. Hence in a knee jerk reaction Advani was declared as the Prime Ministerial candidate. The question deliberated in the BJP circles was that Modi is fighting election for the post of Chief Minister. Then where is the question of his becoming the Prime Ministerial candidate. The announcement by the Parliamentary Board was greeted by a stunned silence from all corners of the party leadership. Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Bajpai also okayed the suggestion in view of his falling health and forgetfulness.  Thus the BJP High Command established its supremacy.

There was yet another topic amongst some Bloggers in the internet that BJP true to its old habit is trying to subvert the constitution by declaring the Prime Ministerial candidate. They argued that the Constitution provides for the election of the leaders of Parliamentary Party after elections are over. The leader of the majority party elected by the elected MPs is invited by the President of India to form the Government. The present Parliamentary Board has no locus-standi in the matter. It is the prerogative and constitutional right of the newly elected MPs to elect their leader. Thus the present Parliamentary Board has become instrumental in snatching away the right of the would-be MPs and thus is subverting the Constitution. The silence of various political parties and the welcome spree by some of the parties, asserting the right of the BJP to declare the Prime Ministerial candidate is also intriguing. Yet another question is in case such a Prime Ministerial candidate is defeated in the elections, then what? There is no bar for a defeated candidate to become the Prime Minister, as he would have to become a member of either house within six months of taking over as Prime Minister. A person rejected by the electorate becoming the Prime Minister would only tantamount to subverting the will of the people. It won’t be conducive to democracy! But then one thing is clear India is ruled by the so called High Command of different parties. No doubt India is a democracy of the High Command, by the High Command and for the High Command!

This no doubt is a personal victory for Advani. He has proved that he is the only person who could be considered as the Prime Ministerial material. By this single stroke he has been able to cut to size Modi who had been trying to scale new heights in the political horizon of BJP. Bajpai also got a setback as he has still been fancying to become the Prime Minister come what may. But circumstances compelled him to surrender his position to his long associate. Thus now L.K.Advani has long been accepted as the Prime Minister in waiting. Only the time will tell whether L.K.Advani becomes the Prime Minister after the Lok Sabha elections or not. However one thing is clear, in such an eventuality he will continue to remain the Prime Minister in waiting.(D.N.Barola)

Senior Citizens are being squeezed by the Govt.

Instead of helping the senior citizens, the Government has an eye on the old age savings of the senior citizens, who are an easy prey as they honestly deposit their life’s savings in the Post Office, Banks or other Government guaranteed institutions. The Finance Minister of the day can easily have an access to the statistics of total deposits of the senior citizens in the country and then the finance experts decide how best to squeeze the savings of the senior citizens.

In many cases the senior citizens were investing their life’s savings in the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme @ 14% per annum interest payable monthly with 10% Bonus on expiry of 6 year term. This roughly meant 15% p.a.payable monthly. The Govt. slashed it to 13% in 1998 and then to 12%. The successive Finance Ministers had an eye on the savings of the old men and they silently picked the pocket of the senior citizens and no body said Ah! Oh! The helpless old men could not raise their voice against the decision of the Finance Ministers.
Not satisfied with this, the interest rates were further slashed to 9.5% in 2001. Now the rate is 8% per annum + no bonus. A senior citizen who deposits l Lac in the Bank was getting 14000 p.a. @ 14% i.e.Rs.1, 166 per month. Now today he gets 8,000 per annum i.e. Rs.666 per month. An unbearable loss of 1000 rupees per month! Apart from this the exemption of 12,000 rupees per annum under section 80 L stands abolished. Under these circumstances how will the senior citizens spend the rest of their life? Why after all the Government wants to squeeze the retirement benefits to fill the coffers of the rich.
The Govt. publicizes that they are giving additional interest of .5% to 1% to the senior citizens. Bravo! First you pick up the pocket of the old man and then make a bargain and settle for a lesser amount. From 1,666 p.m. to 666 per month is enough to make the heart of any senior citizen sink. The paradox is those Ministers who are planning and executing the anti-senior citizen policies are themselves senior citizens. Under the circumstances, who will raise a voice of descent against their policies? The old man has the right to live. It the fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of India. Let the old men exercise their right happily. Is there any one will raise voice of descent against the anti-senior citizen policies of the Government of the day.(D.N.Barola)
