                    It is a fact that in Garhwal and Kumaun regions, there are exclusive folk-rites, folk rituals or folk-prose-song (Mantra) for healing various diseases. For example following mantra or folk rites is for healing stomach ache due to knots or displacement in intestines. Usually, it is said that when one intestine is knotted with other intestine, the person feels pain. It is the personal observation of this author that there used to be one or two specialist women healers in each Garhwali village who used to set the displaced intestines. The female healer would visit the ailing person early in the morning and would massage the belly of the ailing person. The ailing person would be empty stomach before going for healing.
               When the local healer fails to heal the stomach ache or fails to set the displaced intestine, there was call for Mantrik who used to be a Mantra chanting person and healer too (stomach massage expert).Such Mantrik used to chant Mantras or folk rites and used to do stomach massage too.

ॐ नमो आदेशा, , माता पिता गुरु देवता को आदेशा,
वद दो भैरों भाई, चार कोश अगाडी, चार को पिछाड़ी
गोबंद दो भैरों भाई , काली भाई
काली काम मेरा बैरी की नली बन्दा ,
असत अन्गुला नाभि का बंधा ,
रघ भैरो भाई काली का भाई मेरा बैरी को खवणी बध,
आठ अंगुली निलाठ बेध
बारा अगुली मंदर वद नकशीर वद,
मेरो भाई , काली को जै , तेरी दुवाई
मेरा बैरी की आँख बध ,
चार कोश जग कि अगाडी पष्टपिंदडा वंदा
मेरा बैरी का घीट नसाई दे
घर चढ़ाई दे , खल बताई दे,
भैरो भाई , तेरी दुवाई , जम्बू बोगसा तेरी दुवाई
नंदू बोगसा तेरी दुवाई , नाथ बोगसा तेरी दुवाई
फोर मंत्र इश्वरो वाचा:
        The above mantra talks about Kali goddess and her brother Bhairo. The mantra also indicates the Bogsa tantric process a popular tantric process in plains of Garhwal-Tarai Bhabhar.   
The above prose-song, a Mantra (folk Rite) for healing Stomach Ache due to knots in intestine from Garhwal and Kumaun is not in Garhwali or Kumauni language. However, this Mantra (folk Rite) for healing Stomach Ache due to knots in intestine is practiced in both the regions.

   UNESCO is active in protecting the important intangible cultural heritages. Mantra and Tantra are intangible heritage of every region or area.
 The proposes of such action of UNESCO are
1-Safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage
2-Ensuring respect for the intangible cultural heritage of the communities, societies, villages, groups, and individuals
3-Raising consciousness and high awareness at all levels - individual, local, regional, national, international levels for the importance of intangible heritage and ensuring mutual cooperation thereof.
4- The cooperation and assistance provision
                     Defining the ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’   
The Convention for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2003 defined the ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ as
The ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ means the practices representations, expressions, knowledge, skills, as well as instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith those communities, groups, and in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage   transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides the sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity. 
     From Indian point of view, UNESCO lists ‘kutiyattam ’ Sanskrit theatre, Vedic chanting, Ram leela, Ramman of Garhwal Himalayas-a ritual theatre; Mudiyett a ritual theater of Kerala, Kalbeliya –folk song-dance of Rajasthan and Chhau dance of east India.

Pooja Mantra: A Spiritual Folk Rite for initiating worshipping   rituals practiced in Garhwal and Kumaun
  The following Mantra is intangible heritage of Garhwal and Kumaun and is practiced for initiation of a Tantric or Mantrik performance. The mantra remembers or requests the blessing from various deities and goddesses including the Guru.

Ukhel Bhed : Evolution of Vedic  Mantra or Localization of Vedic mantras

    Those who are well versed with Vedic Rhymes/Hymn  they know that Vedic mantras are the rhymes /hymn  are the poem of Autosuggestion therapy. The Garhwali Gorakhpanthi Mantra rhymes are nothing but psychological therapy poems/songs Our prechers transformed Vedic mantras into local language mantras adding local colours and local legends into Vedic mantras
 Here is one example of showing that Ukhel Bhed rhyme of Garhwali Gorakhpanthi is nothing but evolution of Vedic mantras in local language, here Braj and Garhwali mix.
  The 9th shloka of third chapter of Rig-Veda states as
( Rishi-Sage: Utkeelkaty. Devta -deity -Agni, Chhand- Tristup)
  O Agni (deity of Fire) ! You are with abundant energy, you become lighted . You kill enemies, foes and notorious Rakhsas  , you are great of greatest, you are great, you provide happiness, you are caller of  great of greatest. I beg you to provide me shelter
(Rigveda, 3:9, )
 The following stanza is called Ukhel Bhed which is Gorakhpanthi Mantra

           When a person is effected by evil desire of his /her enemy/foe the Tantrik/Mantrik reads the following stanza


 
 
                      उखेल/उषेल  भेद  मंत्र

                 कौन देस जाई जता फिकराई 
                 सौ मण लुब्बा सांगुळ कसकी पग मुड़ी बंधाऊं
 
                आऊ रे मेरा मैमंदा बीर बेग मन्तर तेग मन्तर आऊ
 
               चडंती  आऊ पढ़न्ति आऊ गाजन्तो आऊ गरज्न्तो आऊ

                 उबरन्तो   आऊ डुकरन्तो आऊ किल्कन्तो आऊ

             चौदंतो फेरन्तो आऊ छपन कोटि चामुंडा तोडंती आऊ
 
               इस पिण्डा की सुषति  बिथा का सोत्रमार देषदि  बिथा की औंसी मार
 
             बोलांदी बिथा की जिन्या मार , हांणदि  बिथा की हाथ मार
 
             चलदी बिथा की पाग मार , मार मार मैमंदा बीर मार
 
             बाठा का छांदा को बाण  उखेल , अबट का बंजा को बाण उखेल   
 
             धार की माटी को बाण उखेल, राजस्थान को माटी को बाण उखेल

              धरती अगास फेरन्ता चले , अयाणा चले सपना चले

             छल चले छलभूत चले , नाटिक चले चेटक चले

            मार मार करन्तो बीर मैमंदा चले , चले बीर मैमंदा चले

 Here, in Ukhel Bhed mantra ,  the Tantrik calls brave Memanda to eradicate devilish Oman  . As in the rhyme of above Rig Veda sholka , caller prases Agni and request to eradicate devil , same way here in Ukhel bhed there is appreciation/praise of brave Maimanda and is a request to brave Maimanda for killing bad evil

  Though, Abodh bandhu Bahuguna calls these peoms as initiating/original poems of garhwal but the words Rajasthan, Dhar and maimanda are the proofs that these peoms are borrowed from Rasthani languages by Rajashthani Gorakhpanthi priests

                       Bhishma Kukreti

       There are many traditional rites, traditional rituals for casting off evil spirit, casting off devil spirit, practiced in Garhwal and Kumaun. The healer of casting off evil spirit or Bhoot pichas भूत-पिचास chants the mantra or traditional rites and does many other Tantrik performances.
  The following mantra or भूत-पिचास भगाने का  मंत्र is influenced by Islamic culture as there is mention of Arabic  Bhootani and the meat of pig for the devil. There are a couple of Garhwali words in the following folk rite for casting off evil spirit.

मिठाई , खीचड़ी उखेल, उखेल रे बाबा उखेल, गली नली का बाण, जिकुड़ी का बाण उखेल,
बुकड़ी का बाण उखेल, सिर चडी पेट पडी तो , नौ तीस नारसिंग की दुआई, बूढ़ी अरबी
भूतनी का पाप जाई, क़ाली क़ाली कुखडी का बाण उखेल, तोतला भैणी तेरी क्या क्या पूजा छई,

                 There are hundreds of mantras or folk rites or traditional rituals popular in Garhwal and Kumaun as making water holy; removing misfortunes, healing headache, healing stomach ache;  healing jaundice; healing a pimples, healing injuries; healing eye soaring ;  healing tongue soaring; healing a boil; healing a abscess; healing other skin diseases; breaking curses,  protecting  harm spell from other person; purifying emotions; driving away evil ; moving away move unseen, driving away witches, driving away negative energy, etc.
              The Mantrik, Tantric or healer chants the following folk rite and at the same time he touches the ash on a leave or paper. When the ash is purified by Mantras, the purified ash is applied on the forehead of the ailing or effected person. The ash is also distributed on the four corners of room where the effected person sleeps and the portion of ash is also kept below the pillow used by the effected person. The mantra has influence of Mogul culture and spirituality too.

मै मनदागनी का तूरखणी का जाया , क़ाली सिला मत फिर्न्तो आयो, घोरंतो आयो,
गाड्न्तो आयो, मार पार बाज्न्तो आयो, बांद बादंतो आयो, इस पिण्डा ने कौन कौन से भूत को मारा .
प्रेत को मारा , आकाश की आंछरी को मारा, पाताल की नागणी को मारा, दिन दोपरी बाण को मारा, बलदा रथ को मारा,
सैद सैदास को मारा, मुगल पठान को मारा, छिद्र को मारा, Bhoot  को मारा, प्रेत को मारा, दाग को मारा, दोष को मारा ,
वार विथ्या वार बलाई को मारा, लाल वाम को मारा, छिया छाये को मारा, मुर्दा की हाड को मारा, मसान खपड़ा को मारा ,
दुश्मन की आस, अगुरु खेगदास की आण , राजा दुल्लासाही की कारा, मिकवा ठौली लाख लाख दूवाई,
पढ़ जाई नी संख्या मोहर भाई की दुवाई,

Such ritual arises due to sudden crisis as natural disaster, individual pain disorders, or loss, community loss etc. the following folk rite popular in Garhwal-Kumaun is purely a Nathpanth ritual and there is main deity ‘Narsing’ in the folk rite for protection. There is clear influence of Islamic rites on this folk rite for protection or defense.

              When the future teller tells that a woman is affected by ‘Chhaya’ (evil spirit) the Mantrik or exorcist performs the rite. There are steps of ‘chhaya’ ritual performances. First is Doodh Fool .If the woman becomes free from ‘Doodh fool’ Mantra performance there is no need to go for higher steps. In case ‘Doodh Fool’ is not sufficient then after soma time, Mantrik performs or chants ‘Chhaya Mantra’. If ‘Chhaya Mantra is not enough Mantrik goes for ‘Dariyavali’ and even if ‘Dariyavali’ is not enough Mantrik performs ‘Nagjhadi’ mantra or ritual.
           The folk rite or Doodh Fool ko Mantra about Removing, Warding off or Eliminating Evil Spirit from a Female is adapted with some extent in Garhwali language

                                                   Bhishma Kukreti

            In Garhwal , in the old time and even today, when a future teller forecasts that a particular woman is affected by evil-eye; evil spirit; devilish fairy, unsatisfied soul;  devil spirit; the family members call a Mantrik or Tantric  who tell the date of ritual performance and performs  the Mantrik rituals on the decided day. Usually the Auns or no moon day is always auspicious for such Mantrik-Tantric performances. There are stages for ritual performances if a woman is affected by evil-eye; evil spirit; devilish fairy, unsatisfied soul; devil spirit (chhayaa- छाया). First stage is to chant Doodh fool, then Chhaya performance, then Dariyavali and at last the Nagjhdi tantric performance.
  The following Chhaya mantra is in Garhwali language and as common the mantra is Nathpanth Mantra. Since, the mantra is in Garhwali language or with more of Garhwali words that shows either mantra is adapted or is of later time. There is mention of Dariyawali (Sayings of Dariya saint) saint in the rite.

धक छन सुपारी का छन, फूल की छया छन, जागा रै बैणयो, बाराह बगीचा छन, गुणदेरी से ल़ो सिंतराज, रातों मखमल, सदाबासी गुलाब का फूल फुल्दा छन, ये बैणयो बाकड़ी छन, पहली लंका, दुसरी लंका भयी कौन, हिड्म्बी राक्षस भयो, हिडम्बी राक्षस को हौल्या राक्षस भयो, ढडबा राक्षस भयो, तै राक्षस की सात कन्या भयी, पहली हाल, दूजी बयाल, तीजी बदली ॐ नमो आदेस, ऊंका दाटू जनमण भयो, अंड फोड़ा डंड काष्ट फूटो, बगोट फूटो धुंवा धुंवा उपजी, कुयेड़ी उपजी, कुयेड़ी उपजी त बदली-बदली उपजी गै, मेघ-मेघ उपजी, डौकी डौकी सौकी सौकी उप्जयौ, पिता दसोग्री रावण भयो, माता मंदोदरी भई, भाई इन्द्रजीत , काका कुम्भकरण, बाडो बिभीषण भाई, इन्द्रजीत का बारह फलाले फूल्दी छन, धक दान में क्यौ लेगा, बिजौरे रिमी जिमी केला, गोदावरी सत्ता सितराज, चौती सितला, पांचो सितला, आठों अठोला चलो, बैठ्यो ब्रह्मा का छैल जौंला, अनसो लिंयून्ला, उर्भ पंडित की पोथी, कुर्म पंडित की पोथी, अचक ऋषि की कन्या जन्मी औला, सीता की तोड़ा पत्ती पत्ती पाँच कन्या जन्मी ऐ बैणी, तौकी चेली कौन कौन जन्मी , राई केला जाई केला,दूध केला मौत माला, जिनमाला , धर्ममाला, जौलमाला, फूलमाला, पर्वतमाला, त मेरी बैणयो मै तुमारो भाई , चलो बैणयों, सात समुन्दर बास करला, पाँच रत्न को घर बणोला, तालाब सी मच्छी छन, गोलक की गोपी छन, स्वर्ग की अप्रि छन, चलो रे बैणयों गिरी समुद्र चली, रत्नागिरी समुदर चली, निर समुदर चलि, दूध मऊ समुंदर चलि , फेणि समुन्दर चलि, तौं समुन्दर कौन कौन मच्छी छन, सेतु मच्छ छन, स्याह मच्छ छन, जतन मच्छ छन, बाल मच्छ छन, ब्रह्म मच्छ छन, विष्णु रें बैणयों की चौण (यह खण्ड भतार दरिया से लिया गया है), ये तो बैणयों महादेव की ऊन सवदते उठी सुणो, सुणो बैणयों नाग लोग जम लोग , उर्भ नाग की पोथी , कुर्म नाग की पोथी, शेषनाग की पोथी, फूलमाला की कन्या जन्मी , इंद्र माला बेलमती धना देहि हिल पिगोला जसो दाई, सुन्दर दासी, सुन्दरमती रामदासी थारेदासी चरनदासी , इन्द्र्दासी जागा बैणी तू मेरी बैणी, मी तुमारा भाई, मेरा पशु की बार विथ्या, छतीस रोग सात समुन्दर पार लिज्यी चला बैणियों, इंद्र का तख्त मा होई जौला, मंदार को बासो लियूंला, झां फूल को फुलाले छन थान ह्वेई जौंला, जन्हा बाढ़ सनकी मोरली बाजदी, थान जावा जंहा महादेव का पौखाज बाजद छन, जंहा गुरु गोरखनाथ जी क मेख नाथ बाज्दा जावा . कुंकू डालि का छैला जावो, नौ नाथ का अखाड़ा जावा, गुरु का शब्द जावा, काली का चक्र चली , बारह विथ्याओं को नी ली जयी,छातासों को नी ली जयी, केर ताली , नर्क पड़ी (ॐ क्रीं ह्रीं , क्रीं, क्रां रंगत काली का ) हजार वार जाप अकरने पर यह मंत्र सिद्ध हो जाता है.
