     The Garhwali folk literature expert, great Himalayan drawing artist Dr. Nand Kishor Hatwal provides us many versions of folk songs/Jagar in his book, film and in various write ups.   
  Nanda Jagar are famous in Kumaun, Upper Garhwal (Chamoli, Rudra Prayag and upper Pauri Garhwal). Therefore, there are variations in Nanda Devi goddess folk stories and Jagar as well. The following Jagar is familiar in Chamoli and Rudra Prayag regions.
 
  The story of Nanda Devi goddess begins with the emergence of galaxy (sristhi) called as Jugbaddh, Jugbandhan, Jalakar, jalokar etc. The same version of emerging of galaxy is also seen in Dhol Sagar but different story.

तीन अंडूरा छैयी फंड्येला
तुम अंडूरा आंयाँ -बाँयां न जाया
यौक फंड्येली ऊपर धोळि
जनमी गये ऐंच आगास
हाकि फण्येटि धरतीमा ड्वोऴये (धोळे)
जनमी गये तौळ धरति
यौक फण्येटि पूरब धोळि
जनमि गैयि पूर्बो राज
यौक फण्येटि पश्चिम धोळि
जनमि गैयि पश्चिम राज

यौक फण्येटि दक्षिण धोळि
जनमि गैयि दक्षिण राज
यौक फण्येटि उत्तर धोळि
जनमि गैयि उत्तर राज
 
                              Translation of Jagar Nanda Devi -1:
At fist bird came in existence and then Nal and Nalin
They delivered eggs. The creator took them on the palm
The eggs started to roam here and there.
Then the Creator   threw one to up and sky was born; He threw another to below and earth was born; He threw another to east and east direction was born; he threw another to west and west was born; He threw another to south and south direction was born; he threw another to north and north direction was born.
                                     Following Story
The following story is that the Creator became happy to see his creation. However, the Creator felt sorry that without male the earth will not develop. The original Creator fell down and he divided his body into two parts. One part became Shiva and other part as Nanda.

Nanda Devi is popular and effective goddess of North Garhwal (upper Paudi, Chamoli, and Rudrprayag districts of Uttarakhand). There are various regional folk stories, folk songs related to Goddess Nanda Devi.
The following folk story around Chamoli and Kedar valley speaks about the generation/family tree of Goddess Nanda Devi.

कि सतमंगळि, वै झुमकैलो
सात भाई ऋषि वै ठाकुर जी का पास
सबसे बडो होलो ये हेमंत ऋषि
सबसे कणसि होलि वै रैणा दि मैणा

 There used to be six sage brothers in Rishasauma.
Hemant sage was the eldest one among them.
 No brother was married.
All go for search of brides.
In their path, they meet Thakur jee the king of Kavdyo , the father of seven daughters.
Six brothers meet Thakur jee for Hemant marrying his youngest daughter Maina.
Thakur jee agreed that Hemant had to be Gharjavain( When the son in law lives in the in law’s house).
All agreed and Hemant weds with Maina.

Narad ji comes to Thakur jee’s house and meets Hemant. Narad ji states that the domestic Cicken/hen/cock is the lowest kind of bird in birds’ world and the lowest kind of man is that lives with his in laws. Listening hard words of Narad ji, Hemant (husband of Mainvati) runs away from his in law’s house. The queen Mainavati follows her husband Hemant. She comes to the area of Nandu and the pregnant Mainavati delivers a child. Mainavati dumps the child into pit of Red soil Mines (matkhandi). Mainavati returns to her parental palace.

जब मैनावती ने अपनी कन्या को नन्दू के बैराट में मिटटी की खान में दबा दिया और अपने मायका आ गयी तो यशोदा मटखंडी जाती है और वहां उसे एक कन्या मिलती है। वः कन्या लहू में सनी थी। कन्या मंद मंद हंस रही थी। यशोदा उस कन्या को पोंछती है और गोद में रखती है। फिर यशौदा कन्या को अपने राजमहल ले आती है। अब कन्या के नामकरण की बारी आती है तो ?


मटखांड देखि पै ल्वैढाळि कनया
ल्वैढाळि कनया पै मूल मूल हैंसणि
कनया उठाई पै गोद मा धर्येल्यो
ब्वथायो बुथायि पै ये प्वोंजो मलाशी
पौंछि गे माता अपणा बैराठ
गोद मा धर्याली पै रिष्यों की लाडली
अब होंद कन्या को नामकरण?

                       Yashoda Finds Nanda Devi as girl

 Yashoda comes to Matkhandi and finds a new born child.
The girl was smiling
The girl was into web of blood
Yashoda takes the child and cleans her blood
Yashoda took the child of Sage and brings the girl to her palace 
Now time comes for her naming ceremony

 There are many folk stories and folk songs popular in Garhwal and Kumaun. The following folk song is popular in Upper Garhwal (Chamoli and Rudraprayag).
                 नंदा कु नामकरण-2
जब नारद नामकरण हेटी आये तो कहने लगे सारे खिड़की और दरवाजे बंद कर दो तभी ही कन्या का नामकरण होगा।

किन्तु कन्या धुआँ जाने के छेड़ से बाहर चली गयी। और चलते चलते अपना नाम अपने आप हे रख लेती है। इसके बाद रिषासौ पर दोष लग जाता है। पुछेर/भविष्यवक्ता से गणत निकालने पर मालुम हुआ कि नंदा का दोष लगा है। Hemant  और मैनावती समस्त रिषासू के लोग उत्साह पुर्बक नंदा को लाने चल पड़े। मैणा ने ल्हुयुक्त कन्या को पोंछा और उसे थपथपाया। मैणा पश्चाताप से झल रही थी कि उसने कन्या को मिटटी की खान में कैसे छोड़ा?



घणा रिषासाउ पै सुणा द्यब्ताओ
घणा रिषासाउ पै स्योलागो द्वाष
हमारा मूलक बै क्यगे ह्वालो द्वाष
तुमारो मूलक पै देबी ह्वोलो द्वाष
निर्धारि निर्पंखी बै छाया की चौरड़ी
ल्वैढाळी कनया पै तखी बैठि ह्वोलि
बड़ा बूडों रिस्यों पै छाया की चौरड़ी
हेमंत -मैना पै छाया की चौरड़ी
मैणान उठाइ पै गोद धरयाली
ये पोंछि पलासि पै रवथाई ब्वोथाइ
शरमक मारा पै तैं मैणा पातले
माटा खंडोलि पै मिन छ्वोडि ह्वोलि
 Nand and Yashoda invited sage Narad for naming ceremony of girl they found in mine. Narad advised the couple to close down all the windows and doors at the time of naming ceremony. However, the girl escaped through smoke-chimney. The newly born girl named herself as Nanda.  The people of Rishisaura were ill and the future teller told that it is because of rage of Nanda. All people of Rishisaura including Hemant and Maina ran to take Nanda. They found Nanda on the path. Maina the mother of Nanda cleaned the she child and felt embarrassment for her leaving her newly  born girl child.

गढवाली लोक साहित्य के विद्वान् डा नन्द किशोर हटवाल के अनुसार निम्न जागर पंक्तियों में नंदा का बचपन, बड़ा होना, सहेलियों के साथ खेलना कूदना आदि का वर्णन बड़ी आत्मीयता से हुआ है।
ये नंदा हिंवाळि, झुमकैंलो
ख्येलनी, नाचनी, झुमकैंलो
तरुण जवानी, झुमकैंलो
दिन-दिन बढ़ली,झुमकैंलो
                     Childhood of Nanda

  In this Jagar, the narrator narrates the agile childhood of Nanda. Nanda plays various games with her friends. Nanda crosses her teen age very soon.

 In this folk song, there is description of about talk about searching groom for Nanda Devi or Gauradevi. There is clear glimpse about the parent’s desire for marrying their daughter to competent groom.
